Re: PORTUGAL 2018

Suddenly we climbed in the odds  very strange, not because it's relevant obviously but because I find it very interesting following the withdrawal of the big favorite

Diogo's popularity in Portugal is what made him the big favourite, but that doesn't help him win Eurovision because he is not as well known elsewhere.

The betting 'experts' think that Claudia has a better chance of winning Eurovision than Diogo.

Re: PORTUGAL 2018

Piçarra took the only possible way there was left for him. He could never have gone to ESC with a song that already existed for a very long time. I'm sure his success will continue as it should and in time this episode will be just a bad memory left behind. Case closed.

Piçarra's withdrawal opened the field again for the Portuguese selection and it's pretty much anyone's game at the moment.

There are 3 songs I love, all from the second semi final. Cláudia's O Jardim is a very simple, heartfelt homage to a loved one who's not around anymore. It's modern, very emotional but contained at the same time. It would make a perfect entry for Portugal. Lili with O Voo das Cegonhas is a magical, rich, multi layered chant full of twists and surprises. The poem is magnificent and the singer's peculiar voice gives it an extra edge that may not be to everybody's taste. It is a bit weird in a Salvador Sobral kind of way although it's completely different, of course. It was the big surprise of the year but its chance of winning is slim. Susana Travassos with A Mensageira is another surprise for me. It's a very dark, interesting composition which relies heavily on the singer's strong personality and strange performance. I think it's brilliant, but it's very far from instant and the public didn't get it, just as ESC wouldn't. She was 8th in the semi and only entered the final due the Piçarra's outing. Don't think it would be a good entry for us but I like it anyway.

On a lighter note, I actually like Patati Patata. It's a fun mix of African, Brazillian and Portuguese harmonies and although it could have been better executed I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Peu and Janeiro are of course the current threats at the moment. I don't like them. One represents rancid portugality, the other dull hipsterism and I don't think they would make good entries . I hope we will not fall to one of them.

Presently, I believe votes should be concentrated on Cláudia as she's the one with the greater chances to make it, judging by semi finals results.

Re: PORTUGAL 2018

Well, it's sad but not too surprising that Diogo has decided to step down. In my years of being a Eurovision fan and the many accusations of plagiarism thrown round, I don't think i've ever seen a more clearer case than with his song. Whether it was intentional or not (I believe his word actually), the two pieces were identical in melody the entire way through.

So Cláudia Pascoal is the favourite now? I'm gonna need more time with her because I don't think I have the patience yet for "O Jardim". It's the sort of song for me I don't dislike at all, but it simply goes in one ear and then straight out the other. I'm intrigued though by those emotions she shows at the end of the performance. It's a pleasant enough song and Eurovision has shown us recently that you don't need explosions and such to succeed........ this song is sooooo laid back though. Maybe i'm missing something here as it seems to be grabbing all of you. Two listens though for me and I can't remember anything about it. Will keep trying with it though.

For me it just has to be Catarina Miranda's "Para Sorrir Eu Não Preciso de Nada" pretty please. I thank you.

Re: PORTUGAL 2018

We are not sending an uptempo number this year, and that is OK. I mean, a sea of ballads is never what I am looking for, but Festival da Canção is trying to find its way after those dismal years. I understand it and respect it. The contest is at a point in which the composers are confortable going with downtempos/midtempos. I wish in future editions they take more risks, and make other creative decisions for the sake of diversity.

Regarding this edition... The jury voted better in the first semi-final, whereas the public voted better in the second one. As it stands, the most interesting submissions for me are "O jardim", "Sunset" and "O Voo das Cegonhas".

Diogo Piçarra's withdrawal is unfortunate, but I did not want "Canção do Fim" to win anyway. Last year, I did not jump the Salvador bandwagon right away; however, I understood the fuss about "Amar pelos dois" and his performance. Diogo's song is just there, nothing to brag about it. The idea of having another classical type of song with an orchestration and all as an entry was not making me happy. It worked last year. Now let's move on.

So, this leaves us Cláudia and Janeiro who I think are more than capable to defend the title on home ground. It is weird "(sem título)" being popular on the web, but only getting four televote points in the semi-final. Maybe the public warmed up to it. "O jardim" seems like a consensual choice. I love the lyrical content (farewell songs can be so hard, though). She even has this flowery look that fits the song and the title. And she is great conveying emotions on stage.

The top 3 front-runners based on YouTube hits are Janeiro ("(sem título)"), Claúdia ("O jardim") and Catarina ("Para sorrir eu não preciso de nada").

Yes that stage is great. Obviously eurovision got more funding now in Portugal. It's a shame it's wasted on this song line up.
