Re: PORTUGAL 2018
We are not sending an uptempo number this year, and that is OK. I mean, a sea of ballads is never what I am looking for, but Festival da Canção is trying to find its way after those dismal years. I understand it and respect it. The contest is at a point in which the composers are confortable going with downtempos/midtempos. I wish in future editions they take more risks, and make other creative decisions for the sake of diversity.
Regarding this edition... The jury voted better in the first semi-final, whereas the public voted better in the second one. As it stands, the most interesting submissions for me are "O jardim", "Sunset" and "O Voo das Cegonhas".
Diogo Piçarra's withdrawal is unfortunate, but I did not want "Canção do Fim" to win anyway. Last year, I did not jump the Salvador bandwagon right away; however, I understood the fuss about "Amar pelos dois" and his performance. Diogo's song is just there, nothing to brag about it. The idea of having another classical type of song with an orchestration and all as an entry was not making me happy. It worked last year. Now let's move on.
So, this leaves us Cláudia and Janeiro who I think are more than capable to defend the title on home ground. It is weird "(sem título)" being popular on the web, but only getting four televote points in the semi-final. Maybe the public warmed up to it. "O jardim" seems like a consensual choice. I love the lyrical content (farewell songs can be so hard, though). She even has this flowery look that fits the song and the title. And she is great conveying emotions on stage.
The top 3 front-runners based on YouTube hits are Janeiro ("(sem título)"), Claúdia ("O jardim") and Catarina ("Para sorrir eu não preciso de nada").
