If more end up withdrawing, they should scale back the semifinals as well and let less countries qualify to the final... like the top 5 in each semi, then we'll only have 16 to watch in the final.

It's the year of changes, one more can't possibly make things worse?
And this way Sweden wont have to waste too much electricity and host such a long show.

Either one country has to withdraw or a nation that already decided to withdraw needs to change their mind. Otherwise we'll have an uneven number which always sucks with the Semi situation.

Slovenia and Bosnia & Herzegovina are yet to confirm - right? Oh and Greece! PLEASE xcry1xcry1

I actually think it would be disrespectful if Bosnia withdraws. Sweden has been very supportive of Bosnia and we are the country that took in most Bosnians in the early 90's.

I don't think they'll withdraw though.

I hope you're right.

Bosnia have done no wrong (except for the cheesy 2002-05 entries) but even those are gems compared to say, most Belorussian/Lithuanian entries.

I think that if BH withdraws, the reason is money and not politics, you see what I mean?

Why is it when Scandanavian countries host the contest, the number of participating countries drop significantly (Norway had 39 countries).

I'm being silly of course and it's just a co-incidence but let's hope we won't lose any more countries.

Maybe the standard of life in these countries is too high and small broadcasters will struggle to organise and pay all things needed like ticket flights, hotel bookings and so on, which are very expensive, especially when we compare this to other countries in Europe.
Maybe this is not the reason, but could be so.

What does that have to do with anything? Is failing to send an entry to Sweden's ESC an implication for diplomatic fallout?
If Sweden wants more countries to participate, maybe SVT can subsidize more of the cost like Azerbaijan did last year.

SVT is not a show-off like the Azeri broadcaster, they're not as desperate so they need to bribe countries to take part. Also, the Swedish state wouldn't put resource money in SVT like the Azeri state did... and in the end of the day we don't have those resources anyways

All I'm saying is that it's disrespectful that's all... nothing more - nothing less.

BTW, the EBU isn't worried about the withdrawal of countries saying "Countries come and countries go" and that they expect between 38 -42 countries in Malmo. So they are okay with a lower number of participants. While it is obviously their right to make those decisions, I can't stand that underlying cockiness they put on display and seems not in spirit of the contest.
Yes, I know it's about the mighty dollar (or Euro) but I always hoped they would share our sentiment that ESC so more than that.
