Re: ISRAEL 2018 - Netta Barzilai

She has potential to have the best Eurovision entry this year by a long long way but I'm not sure how the EBU will feel about this one... they only just let JOWST have sampled vocals last year so how the hell will they let her have creative freedom in Lisbon?

Re: ISRAEL 2018 - Netta Barzilai

This has to be the most promising singer for Israel since Next Star-selection started, prior to the song getting revealed at least. Such a cool singer, love the way she is on stage and sample her own voice. As Sean wrote, I am not sure how she will work that out in Eurovision, but if she gets the freedom to do some of this, she has all the chances with a good song to do really well in Eurovision. Suitible, thinking it is 45 years since the debut, 40 years since first win and 20 years since last win....Israel might take this oppurtunity to shine once again. :D

My fave performance out of the ones I found must be the "Barbie Girl" one, damn she rocks that old tune out! :D

Did you like Haya Samir's performance of her entry from 2013 Israeli NF, I asked you about few pages ago? :)

Yeah; I'm really hoping they let her in but it's a big question mark right now. Essentially, they have to decide that what she's doing is not a) a live instrument or b) pre-recorded vocals, but instead either c) live vocals or d) an effect impossible to achieve with either live vocals or pre-recorded instruments.

Considering that they allowed JOWST's vocal effects as kind of a mixture of categories B and D, I think it'd make sense for them to let her style through; it's more integral to what she does than JOWST's synth-vocals were to Grab The Moment, at least. Could go either way though.

Worst-case scenario, we get a singer with an impressive voice anyway, which wouldn't be the worst thing to ever happen, but when there's an opportunity for something really unique on the Eurovision stage, I'd like to see that happen. The betting odds seem to agree – Israel has now climbed to 8th place there!

I'd really like to see her come up with something that has juuuust a touch more understatement than that performance - some kind of beautiful Yasmine Hamdan-style thing. That performance is bonkers and enjoyable, maybe even a 12 in the poll if she gave something like it, but I feel like there's a lot more potential there.

Re: ISRAEL 2018 - Netta Barzilai

This is a really intriguing choice, and it's strange how such a format has resulted in such a singular artist being selected. She's very much unique. I hope the song is good and that she gets freedom to do her thing on stage. My worry is that the vocal synthesizer thing she uses counts as an instrument. Maybe they will let her have adjusted vocals done behind scenes by the sound technicians but somehow I doubt they will allow her to do this stuff alone on stage herself. Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised. If she can use her artistry to play with her voice live then what's to stop someone playing their guitar or blowing into a flute? A serious question that I hope one day gets properly discussed and we can have live music once again at Eurovision if the artists desire it.

That is the question that really needs answered, but I think it is good that acts like Norway last year and possibly Israel this year are sent to the competition. I don't have an answer on if it is to be seen as an instrument or not..and if we should allow instruments on stage in some way. But for Eurovision to move forward, acts like this needs to be sent to open up an discussion on a higher level (and probably a discussion on a forum like this one wouldn't give a clear answer to it). We'll see what happens, but I hope for the best for Netta, I like her style at least and she seem to have a good voice even without the synthesizer.

Well the problem is that technically a synthesizer is an instrument and she's in control of it. It's a more unusual case though as what she does is altering her singing, and we do know that we've had singers in the past who have been allowed unusual vocal effects (just not as far as i'm aware controlled by themselves on stage). But as you say, this could be quite important for Eurovision having Netta there and it might open up discussion. She does have a good voice either way, as you mention. I'm quite looking forward to this.

Really!?! They could have chosen Chen and chose her? What a disappointment! Without her equipment, she‘s nothing!

That's unfairly harsh especially before even hearing the entry from herself.

Well, it‘s not like I‘ve not heard her before.... The only time she „sang“ without her equipment was „Beautiful“ which was a mixture of mumbling, speaking and a few sung notes that showed clearly that there is a reason why she relies so much on technical support.
The rules state clearly that she has to sing live (i.e not recorded). A voice loop is a recording device....

Norway didn't have issues last year with it. Why should Isreal? (Assuming that will be the case with her entry)
