Norway didn't have issues last year with it. Why should Isreal? (Assuming that will be the case with her entry)

Norway used a voice loop last year? I wasn‘t aware of that. Are you sure?

Jowst were actually allowed to use what sounded like prerecorded vocals, but the EBU had this to say when questioned:

“The sounds in question are not vocal samples but made using a synthesizer and cannot be made by a human voice. These sounds are not there to support or replace the real voices of the vocalist or the backing vocalists, but added as an effect. This song, therefore, does not break the rules of the competition.”

It's a different matter with Netta, as she's as far i'm aware creating these sounds herself right? And doing it live too. It's going to be interesting to see how this develops exactly. Providing she makes that loop there and then herself during the performance, then I don't think I mind at all.

But isn't this EXACTLY what Netta's voice loop does?
All in all - I was so hoping for Chen, that my disappointment may have in fact - as LesterMalvo has criticized - biased my opinion on Netta. I'll give her entry a chance once it's out. But I still think she should not be allowed to use all that technical equipment as it opens the door to even more pre-fabricated and manufactured entries in the future.

Hmmm you're right, but what she does is a skill in itself which is why I guess I don't have a problem with it. The very last thing I want is for Eurovision to become more plastic. I'd hate for instance if suddenly it became like Melodifestivalen, allowing prerecorded backing vocals to drown everyone's voices.

I look at what Netta's doing in the same way as someone playing a synthesizer keyboard with their hands, except she's creating the music with her voice. To me what she's doing is still live as she's creating it there and then within the performance. I think if anything it's going to be that she won't be allowed to do her thing because what she's using is classed as an instrument, and rather ironically you're not allowed to play them at Eurovision anymore, despite strict rules in place for vocals being live.

I see your point, I just would prefer that she'd create music with her voice by singing....

Re: ISRAEL 2018 - Netta Barzilai

Complete meaningless selection method xshrug

So called "talent shows" have been constantly dropping in popularity for the past decade, big shows like X-Factor in the UK or American Idol in the US have either been cancelled or struggle with viewership, I think partly because the concepts are tired and streamlined and because people prefer authenticity seeing acts and artists building their careers rather than all these people trying to find a fast-path and 5 minutes of fame through various of talent shows that too often have a very narrow-minded view on "talent" regardless xshrug

Israel should be more concerned with finding the right song and a whole package than spending months on some pointless talent show and in the end send some meh entry to ESC xshrug As much as the artist counts, in the end of the day it's the song that should be priority. Surely it's important that an artist with good enough vocal skills and performance skills will perform the entry, but if the focus is solely on the artist and not the overall package (including a fitting song that is good enough/interesting enough to make some impact in ESC), then what does it matter in the end? xshrug

I think the approach to have a finished package (Bulgaria is taking this the furthest possible) is a better tactic.

Wow, even if we don't have a song yet I still feel this is VERY promising indeed. Even if she might not be able to bring the vocalizer to ESC her performance shows that she has a great sense of music and production. I just hope that she's involved with writing her own song, if not it could go either way! If she's involved I can't see this go wrong tbh :)

Very interesting choice. I hope whatever song they pick is tailored to suit her and she has significant input. If so, Israel could have a very special thing.

Interesting choice here, definitely looking forwad to the song :-) Could be the fourth time in the recent five years having Israel in my top 10.

Mini version of Bojana Stamenov. Don't like her vocal at all. Chen was a way better choice

Onuka used a sampler last year but she was an interval act.
We've got the Maneken, Morphom... so performing with a sampler is not so new to me. Her Gangnam Style was a cacaphony and her vocals didn't impress me as well xshrug
However  I liked the first performance. She's got good vocals when a song doesn't require belting. I love her melismatic singing xheart I liked her acoustic performance in the previous eps.

As for pre-recorded vocals on stage. Well, if they want to use it in the playback it should be allowed like it's been allowed for Jowst before. Not sure if she will be allowed to use it live.

The title seems very interesting, I have a feeling this will knock me down, but let's not jinx it..

Re: ISRAEL 2018 - Netta Barzilai

Netta's song will have the title "Toy" and allegedly she'll be allowed to use her voice looper.
I'm hoping for a good song, but I think allowing such devices is not a good idea for the future of the contest. It moves even more away from a competition of music and talent towards artificial patchwork music.
One thing I admire in artists is, that they build up tension and hold it throughout their performance. Recording little bits and replaying them is the opposite of that capacity, even if the result sounds good. But hey - a full playback version also sounds good, right?

But I have promised to give her entry a fair chance, so I'm gonna try to restrain myself and wait for the song.
