Re: HUNGARY 2018
About last night's show:
Starting from the beginning. Was a bit disappointed that the intro the show wasn't as good as for the first semi. I am a bit confused now. Not sure if that was a semi 1 exclusive intro or if they just gathered some artists of all 3 semis into that first semif-final introduction show song. Didn't look that closely back then and was not familiar with any of the faces yet. In any case, it should have been kept up.
I liked the hosts a little better yesterday. Wardrobe choices were better, at least for Freddi who looks more and more loose within each program. I start to like the girl's style as well.
First act Peet Project was one of two terrible misses for me. Did not like, both the song neither the vocalist. Got a very pretentious vibe out of the guy.
Odett's Aranyhal had good staging. The vocals were good and I quite liked what she was wearing. The staging was also neat. Expected a bit more following the initial listen of the song months ago. Decent qualifier, nothing to point out.
yesyes, albeit not my style was also pretty decent. I liked the staging and that clever use of the accordion. Not one of my favorites from last night but come right after those. Again, decent qualifier, nothing to point out. Band name is not very inspired, just that.
After came one of the songs I liked the best out of the night. Was pretty sad and felt kinda lonely that nobody I had contact with seemed to like Maya ‘n’ Peti's song. I thought it was a beautiful ballad. Maybe the image of both contestants wasn't the most appealing but I liked. The dancing part was really sweet. They were able to pass me emotions, songs like this that are able to channel good emotions should at least get a bit more of a higher score. Or at least to be listened to more closely. In certain ways it reminded me of Norway's
"A monster like me" although nowhere as near as powerful. I felt pretty sad for them, knew their chances were over right after their performance after such low scoring by virtually anybody. So unfortunately I had no expectations regarding 2nd chance and them. This is the first act I liked from this year's A Dal that stays behind.
Singh Viki's song came wrapped in generic ESC formula. Having that said, hardly outstading in most ways. The singing didn't feel powerful enough, the melody was not that remarkable and the lyrics I found the be the lowest point of the whole act. I kinda liked her dress though, although some decorum on the upper part wouldn't have hurt - according to my girl at least anyway
She also seemed quite nervous when receiving the jury's veredict and after realizing she would not get anywhere she had this "want to get out of here as fast as possible" expression in her eyes. Not sure if he had the mental strenght for a wild ride such as is living the ESC experience. Obviously just judging through a tiny bit of stage here so could just be wrong. I wrote here that I had the same thoughts regarding Blanche nearly a year ago but that was part of here performance. In this case, this insecurity was not part of the performance...but in any case, might have just been more disappointment shining through in the end. In overall, it was not that bad but also don't think worth of qualifying. I'm a bit demanding about these songs that come up already in ESC-wrapping for the fact I am a seasoned fan of the contest. I feel a bit bad about what I wrote Knoll Gabi's performance here last week for instance, which I now came to kinda like. I doubt it'll be the case with this song though. Already eliminated and again, those lyrics were no good.
SativuS I liked less even. Together with Peet Project were the lowest acts of the night for me. Nothing stood out, again, only pretention through the vocalist. The juries seemed to catch on this more than with Peet Project but seems the televoting brought a different opinion. For me, this song did nothing. When it came to 2nd chance I wasn't following A Dal so closely anymore for stronger unrelated reasons but I still kept an eye and an ear on and was quite disappointed that they were the choice of the public. Now, more calmly, I easily realize that from all of the songs up for 2nd chance they had been the ones with the highest televote score so not that surprising at all. Don't see what others might in this whole act, I think this song will sink bottom deep within the final.
The following songs I had to listen more properly this morning as I had not listened to them with all my attention yesterday. But I recall being rather impressed by Dánielfy Gergely. And now upon 2nd listen I must even say that this was clearly the strongest song of last night. By far. I thought I liked another one better but this one takes the crown. What a beautiful song. Staging was simple. But the song. On spot vocals, beautiful melodies coming from everywhere, both the guitar and that wonderful violin. Definitely channeled some moving emotions to me. Dánielfy Gergely is very charismatic himself as well. I don't know why but I got some Ott Lepland's "Kuula" vibes though the songs are not alike. Not surprised that the jury liked this as much as they did. Thoroughly deserved qualifier and in my opinion one of the contenders to Lisbon in about a month's time. He seemed really emotional and almost tear-eyed after hearing how well the song did, I thought that scored him points as well. Raw emotions (I believe so) or not, a nice way of channeling even more emotions to the most moving and emotional song of the night.
"Nene was just Nene" - this is what I was told by my girl since I was not able to follow it live last night. I wondered what she meant by this. Having now watched the performance's video I suppose I get it a bit. Maybe her trademark. Or maybe a different way to say pretty average. The staging reminded me of Noémos a little. There were these enchanted forest projections again. But then I realized they were traveling to weather seasons. I really liked the snow effect during winter's, always looks good on TV. Her supporting band had overall good image, visuals counting what they do having a decent looking girl on the bass added some points to the overall visual attractiveness of the act. The vocalist herself sang in a sweet way this rather sweet song. But didn't stand out. I wanted to say Norah Jones' "Sunrise" vibes but I suppose only because of the videoclip. Don't care much about leaving this one behind, although worse songs still passed through.
My first impression on Biga from last night wasn't very positive. Upon watching it properly this morning I was reminded, that this was the guy I thought, from the initial samples, to have very young voice considering how old he actually is. That did stand out in the performance. Very youthful voice. I have mixed feelings about the whole act but I suppose my personal veredict ends up being more positive than anything. The lyrics have good and bad points. I like the message, just not some of the wording. America references seem a little uncessary in a supposed ESC act. Though the whole act had a bit of an American vibe to it. Maybe this is how Hungary chooses to do what Netherlands has done in a couple of years. Also the fact that my sweetheart told me the act reminded her a bit of Jason Mraz enhaced this American feeling I got. I felt a lot of confidence and relaxed "vibes
" from Biga and that's always a plus. He has a very peculiar way of dressing, nothing outstanding really. At least until that part when jury and LGT's member brought up his yellow shoelaces in conversation and they got highlighted by the show. Very tacky. If he ever makes it far, which I doubt, those shoelaces need some serious revamping
Though I really like yellow. But just not in shoelaces. In overall decent qualifier.
Last but not least AWS. I was more impressed yesterday's night than I was today when I sat back and followed the performance more closely. It was the other of two favorite acts of the night although not really my type of rock music per se. This bordered a bit more on screamo rock althouth in screamo the vocals tend to be way more high pitched and, well, whiny. It was not the case here. The screaming was the best part of the song. Could really scream in an attractive and powerful manner. Actually the breakdown is what I liked the most. The performance was good in terms of energy levels though I am left with the feeling the vocalist might have overdone it a bit. But that might just be his style. Was a bit surprised both jury and televote ranked them so high but I suppose it really did stand out from the rest of the acts of last night. And again, one of my preferred acts from last night had the main face behind it teary-eyed by the end. Perhaps there is a pattern going on in here. On the heat of their performance last night I compared them a bit to Leander Rising although they are quite different in many ways. But the rocking link seemed enough. I said to my girl that Leander Rising looked soft compared to them but on second thought, I was just a bit taken away by emotions. I'm sure Leander Rising could put out a heavier and more gutural performance than what AWS did last night. Still like both anyway, each on each's own style. And it's nice to state that good rock music is properly appreciated in Hungary. In countries with more widespread samey-samey commercial genres on eternal loop, an act like this would have a hard time getting to 2nd chance even.
I think they will do well on the final but nowhere as near as good as last night.
Looking forward for the last semi now.
P.S. Bit late with this but thank you for your informative and amusing comments balizeg
