But let´s face it - it probably means a definitive end of Czech participation in Eurovision.

Hopefully not. Comments by ČT people regarding our future participation sounded positive. I think it will come down to whether we finished 11th-12th or dead bottom. If the latter, then I fear we will withdraw forever.

Well, I would say they sounded more reserved and we wanted to translate them as positive. Also, all what was said, was said before the current situation (and before a poisonous article by Mirka Spáčilová in tomorrow´s Idnes.cz). Yes, there still is tiny little hope that if current ČT management (who - again - did absolutely nothing for international promotion) will not hide it´s head into sand and if Russia won´t win, we still may come back. But I am not so optimistic about it. And who knows, maybe the two assholes who stated it on previous pages are right and there´s simply no place for Czechs in Eurovision.

I really believe it was 11th. Or at least want to believe that. I mean the performance was perfect, they absolutely nailed it, the song is just really good with a great atmosphere. Marta has amazing charisma on stage. They really gave it their all and did everything they could.. But oh well. My family and other people I know of liked it as well and thought it was one of the best. :(

I hope with all my heart you come back. Your entry was one of the most special of the year and i've enjoyed following Marta and Václav's journey. It's not fair that you didn't make it today, while many less deserving countries have made it through since Tuesday. The performance was incredible, they were incredible and only a fool (sorry to any fools aroundxqueenbitch) would think it not deserving of a place in the final after such a performance. I'm angry and i'm upset for your country. This is a massive injustice. I want to see just how the voting panned out. If someone gave me a magic wand with the power to put through any country of my choice, i'd put you through, even over my ultimate favourite Malta. It was THAT great. My Mother adored it as well and it was her favourite of the night. At least I can say I tried tonight, but my vote wasn't enough. The jury should have helped you through but I have a feeling their support was nowhere near as strong as it should have been.

I want you guys to come back but I wouldn't be surprised in the least if you run a mile now. It's not fair :(

I hope they made it to 11th place and that it was at least a close call. This might be enough for them to try again. Although they didn't qualify, it should at least be the most successful Czech entry yet.

That is exactly what I think. If :cz: finished 11th-13th I don't think CT will withdraw.

I think it's really silly to want to withdraw because you failed to qualify with a couple of incredibly mediocre songs and performances and then failed again with an average one.
Their vocals were absolutely outstanding, but the song, though by no means poor, was just another one in an already crowded field. Moreover, Vaclav looked tired whereas Marta looked downright bad. Her dress was ill chosen, the tattoo on the leg didn't fit the performance and made her look cheap, and she was too red in the face. Small things, I know, but they count for more than one give them credit for.
I was actually sorry they didn't qualify instead of that irritatingly fake pair from Lithuania, but it was hardly a surprise xshrug

It sounds silly, but it is actually quite understandable. We discussed the strange Czech relationship with Eurovision numerous times, but to put it in a nutshell, it´s like this:

1. The broadcaster (ČT) seems to be interested in participation, but:
2. The journalists are (very vocally) against it, constantly bashing everything Eurovision-related and criticizing ČT for participating in it.
3. People who read their articles get very misinterpreted image of Eurovision as a totally pointless freakshow. The rest don´t even know that Eurovision exists.
4. This results in extremely poor ratings.
5. ČT is funded by people´s money.
6. People are complaining that their money are spent on something what nobody is interested in.
7. Most of the really good/popular artists don´t want to be connected in any way with something so "negative".
8. Sooner or later ČT gives up, because they can hardly say "We don´t care, we will spend your money on whatever we like."

It´s a vicious circle.

As a song, I see only Latvia as having a more interesting composition in this semi, vocally they were up there with Latvia (best of the night). The staging was stunning. They had the best chemistry of all the duets. It felt genuine, not faked like a certain entry you mentioned there that actually makes me cringe. Czech Republic flat out deserved the final this year and it should have happened. It's not a UK case here of sending something mediocre, dull and poorly performed and then wondering why and complaining. It was an above average song, incredible vocalists, it stood out amongst everything else that was there. It was genuine and it should be in the final. Humongous injustice tonight I feel. I thought Marta and Václav looked wonderful as well. My mother even commented on their look.

It's not a surprise really, you're right. When you think about how Eurovision works, gosh it's really not shocking at all. It doesn't make it right though. Music is a subjective thing and I try to always remember that. I just feel really strongly about this one though. I'm just angry that all the dull is passing, whilst stuff with real spark and passion like this fails. I hope we don't lose Czech Republic next year, but then I also hope they don't sell themselves out if they stay. I want them to give us another interesting song next year.

That pretty much sums up the situation in Portugal as well, along with the majority of the western countries with the exception of the Nordic block

None of them is withdrawing though xshrug

So... do you think that Hope is still alive and kicking? :)

Well, I went to a party early this week where there were 3 Czech people (I've got a very good Czech friend of old), a Polish couple, as well as a few Portuguese people. None of them had any idea this thing even existed. I played the Czech song for the Czechs and they looked mystified.

Sometimes hope does die. It has an uncanny way of coming back to life eventually though, without one even realizing why :)

Actually I'm disapointed, that Aserbaijan is in the final and not the Czech Republic. The performance was very good and I liked the song. What a pitty.

Dear Czech Republic,

Please please don't leave us. I'm sure we'll find out soon that it was all a terrible mistake and someone accidentally wrote two "1"s instead of just one next to your name. Please bring Marta and Václav back next year and please please don't leave us.

Yours,

Eurovision
