CanadaSong 56 standings after 9 voters:

1st: 90
2nd: 76
3rd: 70
4th: 68
5th: 56

Seems like there's an obvious standout, but with about 25 hours left anything can still happen

Re: CANADA - WV56 SF1 #19: Nelly Furtado - Turn Off The Light

WORLDVISION 56 DÜSSELDORF :ca::nrwe:

Nelly Furtado - Turn Off The Light

Multi-talented Nelly comes from Victoria, British Columbia. She has released 5 albums since 2000 (her best-known release being her 2006 album Loose) and has won numerous awards across the globe. She also performed at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and comes to WorldVision 56 as the winner of the second CanadaSong national final!

"Turn Off The Light" is the second single from her 2000 debut album Whoa, Nelly!. It did very well across the world, topping the charts in New Zealand and Romania and top 10 in several other European countries. Two versions of the video were released: a regular version (which we will see at WV56) and an underground version

Video

Lyrics

It's getting so lonely inside this bed
Don't know if I should lick my wounds or say woe is me instead
And there's an aching inside my head
It's telling me I'm better off alone
But after midnight, morning will come
And the day will see if you will get some

[Chorus:]
They say that girl ya know she act too tough tough tough
Well it's till' I turn off the light, turn off the light
They say that girl you know she act so rough rough rough
Well it's till' I turn off the light, turn off the light
And I say follow me follow me follow me down down down down
till' you see all my dreams
Not everything in this magical world is quite what it seems

I looked above the other day
Cuz I think I'm good and ready for a change
I live my life by the moon
If it's high play it low, if it's harvest go slow and if it's full, then go
But after midnight morning will come
And the day will see if you're gonna get some

[Chorus]

I'm searching for things that I just cannot see
Why don't you don't you don't you come and be with me
I pretend to be cool with me, want to believe
That I can do it on my own without my heart on my sleeve
I'm running, I'm running, catch up with me life
Where is the love that I'm looking to find
It's all in me, can't you see, why can't you, why can't you see it's all in me

[Chorus]

Where is your logic
Who do you need
Where can you turn in your delicate time of need
Follow me down, follow me down down down,
I do not need I do not need nobody
Where is your logic
Who do you need
Where can you turn in your delicate time of need

I'm happy that this won your NF. Nostalgia is a very powerful thing and I have bags of it for this song. I've weird memories of lil' 9 year old me being on holiday at the seaside with my cousin, throwing shapes to this in the sweet shop:cool:

Good luck Steph. Hopefully we'll see you back in the finalxcrossed

And that's why I don't like voting in NFs... my last place often wins

Re: CANADA - WV57

And so another epic flop. But thank you to those who supported Nelly

I honestly have no idea what's going to happen next edition after 2 heartbreaking failures, but I am committed to getting Canada a win in WV in the future

Re: CANADA - WV57

I'm sorry that Nelly didn't make it. I was really excited to see that "Turn Off The Light" had won your NF. It was a blast from the past for me. It had been so many years since I last heard that song and I fell in love all over again with it. Thank you Stephxheart

Your dream will come true in time. I believe you just need to stop thinking so hard about it. Just carry on sending the music you love and eventually you'll pick the right one. You've got so many great artists at your disposal. Keep going!

Re: CANADA - WV57

Well, now that I have Canada, there is one song from the 80s that I'd love to send - it was a big part of my childhood and I still enjoy it even now. I think many others might know it too

Re: CANADA - WV57

I have a couple of questions to ask you guys...

I'm still stuck on an entry to send for next edition. I've sent pop, classic rock and folk, and have practically covered many different decades from the 70s to today. Taking into consideration everything I've done in WV (including the 30 entries I've sent for Switzerland and the 11 for Canada) and as well as what you know about me:

1. What kind of song should I send for Canada in the next few editions?

2. How do you think I'm doing as Canadian juror so far?

Re: CANADA - WV57

1. Goodness knows! Sorry-cannot help you with that! I don't know many Canadian songs to suggest.

2. How are you doing? Well when I've liked your songs, I've REALLY liked them! I've given you a 12 and a 10 in the semis-so not bad for five editions! I enjoy hearing what you have for us and think you're doing well. :)

Re: CANADA - WV57

1. I would just say send what you love most, but then I know you have goals, and to achieve those goals you'll obviously have to think a bit more carefully. I'm sure you can still meet in the middle though, but stuff from the 80's/90's will always hold a certain risk.

2. You're doing pretty alright i'd say. Plenty of people have been suffering worse results. In terms of your own expectations and goals though, I don't think you've been playing it that well. You seem desperate for the win, but since i've been playing, only Kiesza's "Stronger" struck me a song that could win (that was my first WV though so I didn't know what kinds of songs did well at that point) and that sadly did very poorly in the final. I think Loreena could get you the win but with the right song.

There are a fair few Canadian artists I really love but I don't think you'd be into them. Your country has some great Psych Pop and Slacker Rock. My suggestion to you would be for some more folk. You've got some absolute legends like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and of course Loreena Mckennitt. The Wainwright family are great as well. You've got Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Loudon Wainwright III, Martha Wainwright and my favourite, Rufus Wainwright (I don't know what you think about him though as I remember you didn't give any points when I sent him to a spin-off:lol:).

WV57 Update

After careful consideration, Canada's Broadcast Media Consortium (CBMC) have decided on an internal selection for the 57th WorldVision competition, and the artist has been chosen! Will this hopeful finally be able to put Canada's aspirations back on track? You'll have to find out soon!

Re: CANADA - WV57 SF2 #19: Rykka - Movies

WORLDVISION 57 ROVANIEMI :ca::fi:

Rykka - Movies

Rykka comes from Vancouver and divides her time between her hometown and Zurich, Switzerland. Her music has been heard in many Canadian TV shows and films, and she has won many awards in both British Columbia and in Europe. Currently, she is one of the six remaining candidates looking to represent Switzerland at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm with the song "The Last Of Our Kind".

Her WorldVision entry, "Movies", was released in June of 2015 and will be featured on her 2016 album Beatitudes. According to Rykka, it tells the tale of two rebels and their love affair as a brief escape from the social poverty of life

Video

Lyrics
I'm an electric fence, hardwired to keep you out
But your shit is so intense, I'll let you in no doubt
Hit like a hurricane, so unpredictable
I like the way you sin, my kind of trouble

Truth is what we want it to be
No one knows the wars that we've seen
We fight, we fight
Kiss me hard behind the smokescreen
Let's make love like in the movies
Ignite, burn bright

Built like an atom bomb, we will incinerate
Too hot to last for long, too fast to fade away
Hit like a hurricane, we're unpredictable
I like the way we sin, let's make some trouble

Truth is what we want it to be
No one knows the wars that we've seen
We fight, we fight
Kiss me hard behind the smokescreen
Let's make love like in the movies
Ignite, burn bright

Nothing's gonna rock us, bullets couldn't stop us
Never giving up, giving in, going down
Forever undivided, raise your guns and fight it
Never giving up, giving in, going down

We fight, we fight
Burn bright, burn bright
We fight, we fight
Ignite, ignite

Truth is what we want it to be
No one knows the wars that we've seen
We fight, we fight
Kiss me hard behind the smokescreen
Let's make love like in the movies
Burn bright, burn bright

Nothing's gonna rock us, bullets couldn't stop us
Never giving up, giving in, going down
Forever undivided, raise your guns and fight it
Never giving up, giving in, going down

Kiss me hard behind the smokescreen
Let's make love like in the movies
