Re: CANADA - WV53: Back to the 80s

After a 12th-place finish with Loreena, for WV53 Canada is going back to the 1980s! This was the decade where great Canadian artists, bands and songs emerged, many of them becoming classics that are still loved even today and woven into the texture of our culture and music scene. I will be sharing one of my most favorite songs from that decade, and I hope you enjoy it next edition!

Re: CANADA - WV53: Back to the 80s with Glass Tiger

Here is the group that's been selected to represent Canada at WV53 in Astana!

Glass-Tiger_Contest.jpg

Formed in Newmarket, Ontario (north of Toronto) in 1983 and fronted by Scottish-born Alan Frew, Glass Tiger is one of Canada's best-known and best-loved bands of the 1980s. Their 1986 debut album went quadruple platinum in Canada and gold in the US, and the band won 5 Juno Awards (Canada's equivalent of the Grammys)

One of the founding members left the group in 1988, but the remaining members are still performing to this very day

Re: CANADA - WV53 SF1 #14: Glass Tiger - Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)

WORLDVISION 53 ASTANA :ca::kz:

Glass Tiger - Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)

The lead track from their 1986 debut album "The Thin Red Line", this is considered to be the band's signature song. Featuring background vocals by Bryan Adams, the song topped the Canadian charts and reached #2 in the United States. It also did well in the UK, Australia and the Netherlands. It still gets regular airplay on Canadian radio stations to this day

Two different versions of the video were done, one for US play and one for Canadian play. The Canadian version is the one featured here.

Lyrics
You take my breath away
Love thinks it's here to stay
There's still so much for me to do
And I can't stop loving you
Oh can this be true

If you could see what I have seen
Broken hearts and broken dreams
Then I wake up and you're not there
Pain finds me everywhere
Oh! But you don't care

Don't forget me when I'm gone
My heart would break
I have loved you for so long
It's all I can take

You, you take my breath away
Love thinks it's here to stay
There's still so much for me to do
And I can't stop loving you
Oh! Can this be true

Don't forget me when I'm gone
(My heart would break)
I have loved you for so long
It's all I can take

Then I wake up and you're not there
Pain finds me everywhere
Oh! But you don't care

Don't forget me when I'm gone
(For heaven's sake)
I have loved you for so long
(There's nothing wrong)

So don't forget me when I'm gone
(My heart would break)
I have loved you for so long
There's nothing wrong

Re: CANADA - WV54

And so we leave Kazakhstan with 25th place in the semi, extremely disappointing. Still, thank you to those who voted

We're going to Eastern Canada for Canada's next entry, hope you all like Celtic folk-pop with a Canadian twist!

Re: CANADA - WV54

Canada has made a pitching change!
I've decided to swap out my original entry for WV54 with something that hits a little closer to home (No, Freedom Roomers, don't get your hopes up!).

Re: CANADA - WV54

Sorry you failed so bad this edition Steph. I enjoyed your 80's blast from the past, which sadly was in my favourite semi since i've been playing this game. A lot of songs I enjoyed missed out on my points.

I've been meaning to ask you if you're a fan of Joni Mitchell? When you were giving out the clues for Loreena, Joni actually came to my mind. Quite possibly the most influential female folk artists of all time. She has some iconic songs, and many hidden gems (that I usually sway more towards than her big hits). Just wondering if she's someone you've ever considered?:p

No, I would never send Drake. And Rainy, now that you mention Joni, she's an amazing folk artist. I may send her in the future along with something from Jann Arden, who's also a great storyteller through music

Oooo, i'll be keeping a very keen eye out then. A few years back I bought an ultra cheap boxset of her albums, "The Studio Albums 1968-1979". No less then 10 of her records in the collection. I've got a soft spot for her piano pieces especially, and her album "Ladies Of The Canyon". One of the songs "Rainy Night House" really gets to me.

I don't think i'm familiar with Jann Arden.

Re: CANADA - WV54 SF1 #08: Serena Ryder - Together We Are One

WORLDVISION 54 LAS PALMAS :ca::es:

Serena Ryder - Together We Are One

Toronto-based Serena Ryder specializes in folk-rock and indie-rock. She started her career in 1998 and has become one of the most popular musicians of her genre in Canada

"Together We Are One" was chosen as the official anthem of the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games held in Toronto and Serena is proud to bring the spirit of that event here to the Canary Islands for WV54

Video

Lyrics

We are one
We are beautiful
It's undeniable
We are all the same
Who's to say
What is right or wrong
Cause we all belong
United we stand

We're strong when we walk together
Together we can sing much louder
Louder than any voice alone
With the strength of a thousand soldiers
We can climb any mountain higher
Higher, higher, higher

Stand up
Together put your hands up
You're not alone
Together we are one
Sing with me
To the rhythm of your heart beat
You're not alone
Together we are one
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Together we are one
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Together we are one

It's true
There is no obstacle
We are unstoppable
No power can divide
One foot in front of the other
One hand in another
The miracle of one

We're strong when we walk together
Together we can sing much louder
Louder than any voice alone
With the strength of a thousand soldiers
We can climb any mountain higher
Higher, higher, higher

Stand up
Together put your hands up
You're not alone
Together we are one
Sing with me
To the rhythm of your heart beat
You're not alone
Together we are one
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Together we are one
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Together we are one

We are one
We are beautiful
We are strong
We are one
We are one
We are beautiful
We are strong
We are one

Stand up
Together put your hands up
You're not alone
Together we are one
Sing with me
To the rhythm of your heart beat
You're not alone
Together we are one
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Together we are one
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Together we are one

This is topped only by "Ironic" for best Canadian song of my short WV tenure.
