They have really missed an opportunity to internally select a big name. I will never understand why countries feel the need to hold massive NF's after getting a good result. You didn't get a good result with that method so why use it?

Totally agree. It's kind of baffling. We all saw what happened in the German national final this year. Big or well regarded names seldom ever want to take part in these things. It can be incredibly embarrassing for them. I love when the BBC had Morrissey interested in representing us but wouldn't allow him to be internally selectedX-OI

Oh well.. of course, it's not always about the name. It's just now would have been the perfect chance to get someone big. Let's hope some quality songs get submitted.

I get your points but national finals give you so many more songs to love than just one internally selected. Austrian finals aren't exactly great admittedly but I think ORF has fire in their belly and want to achieve big things this year.

I'm really glad we'll have a national final! It will definitely be beneficial for the Eurovision enthusiasm among the general Austrian public. I just hope it won't be a talent show type of NF.

That's very true and probably THE biggest part of the fun from following Eurovision. If say Sweden were to announce an internal selection we'd all flip our lids. Austria hasn't had the best selection shows ever though and now was the perfect time for them to reach out to someone held in high regard. They could have at least chosen someone internally and then done a presentation of a few songs for the public to vote for.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, but we've seen it before several times in other countries where they have had a good result one year, gone huge the next and flopped big style. Spain is an example of a country that repeats this and Slovenia 2012 is another.

Small names can be just as good as big names though. NFs give lesser well known artists the chance to give a real kickstart to their career :D

Soap&Skin xheat

Russkaja would be an interesting although perhaps weird pick for a host nation. I usually love this kind of stuff in the contest. I've seen Parov Stelar's name around quite a bit recently.. from what i've heard it sounds like he makes that sort of Caro Emerald style of pop jazz that I can't say i'm overly fond of. Left Boy isn't really my cup of tea but he seems solid. I didn't really feel Kontrust, again it's not my thing.

Would any of these artists want to compete in a National Selection though? That's the big question as they all seem established artists.

Anja Plaschg's "Mr. Gaunt PT 1000" is by far and large her most inviting piece. Soap&Skin is a pure pipe dream that will never happen. She won an EBBA award a few years back and declared that she didn't feel "very comfortable here" when picking it up from Jools Holland. That's the only televised moment i've ever seen of her. She's such an enigma. I cannot see her wanting to pretend to play her piano at Eurovision.. However, for her electronic pieces she usually stands up and uses part playback for her synths. I think i'd like to see her perform something magnificent and bleak at the contest. I would want "Sugarbread" 2.0 to send half the contest's fan base into a confused frenzy. They thought Rona was shocking, wait until they are shocked by Anja xqueenbitch

xcry1 She's everything to me. I can't bare how special she is.

Hopefully Anna F.'s cooperation means that she might be interested in representing Austria in a future edition.

I like the sound of this format :D seems like they'll find a true artist rather than just a singer :)

It's seems more and more countries are using the BBC's format of using undiscovered talent (and will probably do a much better job at it). I like the sound of this National final, as Conwel97 says it looks they will find a true artist. I'm not sure what they will do as the format of the shows, I really hope its not going to be MF style because the format is rarely a success in countries who try to copy it. It seems by what it's says it will be something like a reality type show, but without castings so emphasis is put on quality.
