Here we go again!

My husband thinks it's a terrible year and so far, he doesn't have one song he really likes.

He thinks Hungary, Switzerland, Romania and Finland are okay and Belgium "is a song I wouldn't skip if it plays in the background of a tv show".

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Some other remarks of him I had a good laugh about:

Romania: "is she a vampire?" - after she drops the cape: "oh, wow, there we go, the short skirts are coming. Like!"

Iceland: "i hate myself to say that but this isn't the worst song of all. still crap though."

Armenia: "does he wear a Batman costume?"

Slovenia (shaking head in disbelief): "they are really serious, aren't they???? do they really mean it?"

Greece: "is that spanish?" - me: "just look at the letters, it's Greek, obviously!!!!" - him: "oh, cool, they use the same font in <<altered carbon>> (tv series) - me: "N O ???!!!!":lol::lol:

Italy: "is this arabic?" (yes, my hubby's awful at languages  ) "I think, this is Morocco!" (don't ask me why he thinks Morocco is participating in the Eurovision these days...)

Montenegro: (after reading his name, Vanja, but hadn't seen the video yet): "Oh, this is Russia, isn't it? Is she a nice girl?" :D

I wish I could post in this thread - which I always found so interesting - again, but that will no longer happen, since my aunt - that I regarded as my true mother and with whom I watched Eurovision religiously every year since 2009 - passed away in mid-December 2017. :(

In order to pay tribute to her one last time (as far as Eurovision is concerned), I thought I would gather all her personal Eurovision winners here:

2009 - :ee: Urban Symphony - "Rändajad"
2010 - :ua: Alyosha - "Sweet People"
2011 - :ge: Eldrine - "One More Day"
2012 - :az: Sabina Babayeva - "When The Music Dies"
2013 - :ro: Cezar - "It's My Life"
2014 - :se: Sanna Nielsen - "Undo"
2015 - :ge: Nina Sublatti - "Warrior"
2016 - :hr: Nina Kraljić - "Lighthouse"
2017 - :pl: Kasia Moś - "Flashlight"

If I had to guess which 2018 act she would have been praising the most, it's very easy:

2018 - :ee: Elina Nechayeva - "La Forza"

No doubt Estonia would have been her number 1, the song would have been her style 100%. I hope she agrees with me from where she is now...

Around the time for easter, my family will have our annual Eurovision-listenin, for the 12th year in a row. We have got many faves from it like for example :by: and :md: 2007, :ba: 2008, 2013, :nl: 2014 and :ge: 2016. You can see last years result from it HERE.

So which songs do I think my family will like this year? Well it is a little early, still 10 songs left to be chosen but from what I've see so far, a few guesses could be:

For my mother:
:al: - She has often like the more rockish or popish songs from Albania, so I wouldn't be surprised she might enjoy this.
:be: - My mother ended up loving Belgium last year and I think she will enjoy this years song a lot as well.
:ee: - She is a sucker for great singers, and maybe she will like Elinas.
:ch: - I think mom will really like the rhythm and it has some slight similarities to The White Stripes which she likes a bit, so wouldn't be surprised a high point for the Swiss this time.
:ro: - Very 80s rockish, could see her giving this an extra point.
:nl: - I thought she would like O'G3NE last year, but she didn't really, but this year I am sure she will go all in. She LOVED The Common Linnets on the first listen, and with this being more rockish, this has to be more her kind of song!
:de: - I think the story behind the song will make her like this song quite a lot.
:it: - She hasn't been that fond of the Italian songs since the comeback, but she loves the italian language, and with this being more rockish, she might enjoy this more than other entries in the recent past.
:uk: - being one of two who totally raised me with Eurythmics and seeing SuRie having similarities to Annie Lennox, I expect and extra point from my mom for that.

My little brother:
:cz: My brother has a weird taste, and sometimes he can like things that you never expect. For example, he often likes funny songs, like UK 2016 and especially Romania 2017, which make me think that the Czechs might be in his interest this year.
:md: Same as with Czech Republic basically...
:hu: He has been longing for some rock in MF and ESC now...and now he got it big time. Not exactly the rock he listens to, but I am sure he will get this and award it really high score.

So yeah, that is what I think they might like, but who knows, we have to see when all songs are out! :D

My favorite thread xheart And shockingly predictive - makes :pl:'s 2016 "shock" televote slay seem downright predictable in retrospect. I'm seeing my parents in a week-ish so will update then.

My mother says her favourite is Switzerland. She also likes France (she finds it really enjoyable to listen to) and Cyprus (it's different).

My mother's favourites this year:
:hu: :ee: :it: :ua: :es: :fi: :mt: :lv: :by:
(love her taste)

Her biggest favourites however:
Grande Amore, You are the only one, It's my life, Rise like a phoenix, My friend, Running, Heroes, Mother, Never forget, Origo

My father's not keen on Eurovision, but there were a few performances through the years that caught his attention, for instance:
You are the only one, Hold me, Lipstick

I showed like half of the songs to my mum and she reckons it’s a bad year (I think so as well). She only liked :cy: and :ee:

Hooray for the return of one of the usual annual threads~ I bring opinions from my mum after showing her a recap video (and most of the full performances over the last couple of months).

The ones she noted liking were, in no particular order:
#11–#04 :by::hu::nl::ua::cz::gr::fi::fr:
Top three :it::dk::ee:

Solid taste there, Mum. Especially those top three.

Some notable comments:
:gr: "Oh, the floating lady." (When I showed her the original release a while back it was just that lyric video with Yianna floating in the background.)
:au: "It's... okay. I'm kind of close to liking it, but that might just be because she's from Australia."
:ch: "I'd probably like this one if the girl didn't look like Fifi Box doing a silly dance." (Fifi Box being an airheaded Aussie TV personality my mum dislikes).
:cy: "Is there any point to this apart from the girl just writhing around and trying to look sexy? She needs to actually have a song to back it up."
:fr: "This one reminds me a bit of a Duran Duran song. Actually, it's pretty similar to a lot of their stuff." (Pretty high praise from her, seeing as Duran Duran is her equal-favourite band.)

I'll see if I can rope my dad into this at some point over the next week or so, though generally he just says every song is "terrible. Nowhere near as good as last year. Not a single song here worth listening to" until he sees them live, at which point he starts to like a bunch and they turn into the "good songs from last year" to compare the next year with

After getting some thoughts from my mum a few days ago, I've now kidnapped my dad to listen through a recap of all the entries, plus full versions of a few he was interested in. His reaction was less negative than expected! His favourites so far:

#09–03: :md::am::au::no::hu::es::de::cy:
Top two: :il::nl:

Some notable comments:
:nl: "Yeah. Yeah, I like that one. He's going to win. Either that or second, at least."
 "He's wearing the same outfit as last time!" (In the official video clip. And yep, he's right! Surprised he noticed that.)
:pl: "Nah, they've gone way downhill since those butter-churning girls."
:sl: *Silence and a face of mixed confusion, despair and disgust*
:by: "What are they going to do if they win? Do they even have buildings in Belarus?"
:ee: "Big enough dress, love?"
:cz: "Nope. Too much Justin Bieber in this. Sounds Eurovision-y though."
:cy: *Before the music even starts, looking at Eleni* "Okay, I like this one. This is good." *Music starts* "Oh, it's even got a good beat too."
:pt: "Ugh. No. I don't like that sort of crap. No. NO."
:se: "What, is he trying to be George Michael or something?"
:be: "At least she's awake, unlike last year's Belgian contestant."
:fr: "No. Just on principle. Because it's France."

What a very closed-minded opinion, any reason why or just pure racism against France? (wouldn't be surprised if some british people act that way, including some members in this forum...)

Neither of the above - just a bit of a running joke in the family, really. There was a solid period of ten years or so where he hated every French Eurovision entry (he's not really a fan of slow chanson ballads or cheesy French dance pop, which rules out just about everything that the country sent for a decade), so every time he hears about France in Eurovision he groans as a bit of a joke (and usually does the same thing with the UK for similar reasons despite having a UK background). I probably should've provided some more context on that one

So, husband‘s listened to the rest of the songs since I forced him last time.
This time, the reactions were slightley better.

He liked Austria, Macedonia, Cyprus and Azerbaijan (the three girls obviously not only because of the song XD).

He thinks the best (of all songs) however is Norway!!! I was surprised - I love my man! :)

Australia - boring song but bonus point for the cute girl

Israel: O M F G ... „I‘m not your toy? Yeah, you can‘t. If you were my toy I‘d bring you back to the toy store to get refund!“
(Calm down, my SJW friends, we were just a little joking! ;-))

San Marino: „We are who we are? And who we are is who we want to be? Wow. This is Eric Saade-Stop don’t say that it’s impossible, cause I know it’s possible-league. Lyricwise.“
(He‘s been making fun of those lyrics since 2011 and hasn‘t stopped since)

Lithuania: „Did she smoke something?“
