Time for me to review the Dutch entry this year
Trijntje Oosterhuis - Walk Along
Status: Hmm... Ok...
Song: Well, The Netherlands have been stepping up their efforts for two years and I was already confident about a good entry three times in a row... Well, I listened to "Walk Along" for the first time in the first semi, and I must say that it was really disappointing. The song itself is kind of anonymous, it does not have that much character. This is basically a folk-ish/country-ish/pop-ish ballad with a chorus that represents three quarters of the song and that is infectious in a negative way to me because it gets annoying after a while. Anouk should have known better tbh, after last year's success, this is a very poor composition in comparison. That's all I can say about it, this is not a bad song, but I found it weak and underwhelming after "Birds" and "Calm After The Storm".
Voice: I didn't know Trijntje beforehand but I think she has a very nice voice, she seems experienced and that bothers me because I've got the feeling this talented artist has been wasted with such an insignificant song. Her performance sounded good imo, it wasn't that far from the studio version, but the song...
Staging: I don't remember anything about it, apart from her strange outfit and the messy camerawork and closeups. I've read here that staging was made by the same person who was responsible for it last year... Really? There was no set atmosphere whatsoever, it looked like a regular staging to me: nothing inspiring or exciting. That's a shame really.
Outcome: It's sad but imo the Dutch non-qualification was more than deserved: nothing (apart from the vocals maybe) was spot on. The song was weak, the staging was non-existent, choices in terms of fashion were dubious and the camerawork was really bad (even though it should be ORF's fault in the latter case). I'm sorry for Trijntje because she would have deserved a real good song, not this. "Walk Along" is placed very low in my personal ranking, I don't dislike it but it's anecdotal at all levels. Better luck next year, and please send something way better!
