I hope that if the 3J's make it to the final, there will be a revival of the popularity of the festival here in the Netherlands. Maybe some of the real superstars who are sceptic about it dare to step up and participate :) You can imagine the festival being unpopular after not qualifying for a final 6 times in a row...

Exactly! It's the same every year: almost everybody is negative and sceptic about Eurovision and it seems like our greatest artists see the contest as a 'failure' for their career... I miss the times when we had National (Semi-) Finals with enthusiastic people who all wanted to be there. I think and hope that if the 3JS will do it well in Dusseldorf, that the enthusiasm will be partly back again.

This song is still my favourite, I hope it makes it to the final since I won't be able to vote in the semi. That Sieneke from last year was horrible, poor girl. The song was geriatric rubbish, but the poor girl looked and dressed as one of my 60 year old mothers friends, her stylist should be fired and banned from working with young girls ever again, and stick to old ladies at resting homes.
So, fingers crossed for genuine dutch rockers, the esc needs entries like this one, glossy pop-boys doesn't cut it for me :)

Great that it's your favourite!
I agree with you about our entry from last year. Even for the genre, the song was very weak. Many people in Holland didn't like it, but we had nothing to say about it. I've heard that Pierre Kartner wants to write a song again and also Sieneke wants to participate for a second time, because she enjoyed it so much last year. I hope this will never happen...!!
Never Alone is the first entry in years, that I like. And I really think we should get through to the final this year, because both Holland and the 3JS deserve it!

I guess going trough to the final is our biggest goal this year. Most people here in Holland don't even think about winning. We want to be in the final ^^ And if we go through, I guess every Dutch person will feel like we've already won.

That's the only advantage of not going through for six years in a row: you will be glad with every single step in the good direction!!!

I totally agree! No one expects us to reach the top-15 or so, but That isn't important if you can't even reach the final for the past 6 years. This ESC Will already be considered a success by (just) reaching the final :)

Every year, there's this song that I really don't like in the beginning but then, something happens and I start thinking about it and then I find myself listening to it more and more to the point I get completely addicted to it.
This year it's the Netherlands. At first I got even to the point of nominating it as backing nomination in the BB game (if I remember correctly).
Now I simply love everything about it and the only thing that makes me sad is that we are not in the same semifinal, so that I could vote for it.:( I sincerely hope it reaches the final, it's such a beautiful song! :)

Eurovision Betting Analysis: Can the Netherlands reverse their fortunes?

In this series so far I’ve tended to deal with countries which have a strong track record in Eurovision. When a Dutch Eurovision magazine asked me if I would like to write an article on the chances for the Netherlands this year, it was an opportunity to write instead about the country which has the worst record in recent Eurovision history.

The Netherlands has failed to reach the Top 12 since the turn of the millennium, and their only qualification since the semi-final system began was in 2004. They have often seemed trapped in a Eurovision timewarp, as their terribly dated and cheesy last two offerings showed. Have the Dutch learnt from their mistakes in sending 3JS with ’Never Alone’?

First, the good news. ‘Never Alone’ is a decent number by Eurovision standards. It’s a radio-friendly, midtempo song with plenty of nice little hooks. The lead singer has an interesting voice with an effective, plaintive tone in the high notes that suits the composition. You can watch a live rendition here.

The country’s sole semi qualifier, Re-Union’s ‘Without You’ in 2004, was a similarly gentle number.

‘Never Alone’ also has the great good fortune of being in the second semi-final, which has plenty of dross. To qualify it has to beat nine songs, and there’s no doubt there are nine worse songs in this heat.

The lack of big hitters in this semi is similarly good news for nations such as The Netherlands which are relatively friendless in televoting terms. The country has just the one ally – Belgium – and this time around they don’t have to compete with the likes of Armenia and Greece, who hoovered up the Belgian 12 and 10 in the 2008 semi.

That year was the last time The Netherlands sent a credible entry. Hind’s ‘Your Heart Belongs To Me’ was an enthnopop song that was compared, often favourably, to the Armenian entry that year. But it fared much worse, and here’s where the bad news starts for 3JS’s chances in 2011.

In part, what did for Hind was bad staging, and this seems to be something of a pattern for The Netherlands. Repeating their mistake from 2007 – Edsilia Rombley’s ‘On Top of the World’ – pointless and poor backing dancers distracted from the song (although Hind’s failure to use the stage or find the camera counted even more).

The staging in 2009 and 2010 also seemed to hinder rather than help, so it has to be a worry what the Netherlands team will come up with for this year – even though ‘Never Alone’ isn’t the kind of song that needs any theatrics. The comparable ‘Without You’ qualified in 2004 with just two blokes with stools and guitars. But even if this lesson is learnt and the staging is an improvement on recent years, a bigger problem lies in wait.

Re-Union were drawn last in that 2004 semi-final. Always helpful, it is especially crucial for a song like ‘Without You’ – as demonstrated by its disastrous showing in the final when it had an early draw.

3JS also have a terrible draw (three) in their semi and, sadly, I think this could prove fatal. Because while ‘Never Alone’ is competent and pleasant, it’s also easily forgettable. 3JS are hardly telegenic, either. Who, apart from the Belgians, is going to remember this inoffensive number by the end of the show?

If the Netherlands are to scrape into the final, therefore, I think they will have to rely on a high jury score. This isn’t impossible – as I say, there are certainly nine worse songs in this heat – but at the same time, I struggle to see the juries going for it in a sufficiently big way. It’s just too bland, and bland is about as damning an adjective as you can apply to a Eurovision song.

So, much as it would be nice to see the Netherlands reverse their disastrous run of recent results by qualifying for the big one, and a fair result as it would be in this semi-final, ultimately I fear it’s not going to happen.

I copied this from a Dutch forum. I totally agree with some parts of the analysis, especially the part about our last entries. Our songs from 2007 and 2008 were good enough to reach the final, but the staging was so bad that the whole performance became saltless and powerless, which made it quite forgettable.
But I don't think it will happen again this year, because Never alone is the first 'slower' song we have had in years. The last few years, we've sent many dancing/uptempo songs, that somehow 'needed' backing dancers. But it would be ridiculous to put backing dancers beside the 3JS, because it doesn't suit the song at all. Besides, the 3JS always give very 'simple' performances; only them and maybe some backing singers, but that's all. I don't think they will add useless features in the performance this year, because it doesn't match with the simple image of the 3JS.
The only thing I'm worried about is, indeed, the draw in our semifinal. It isn't very helpful for us that we are the third to perform. I'm afraid a song like Never alone will snow under when there are many other performances after them. Not because Never alone is a weak song, but because it isn't that catchy in comparison with some other songs in the 2nd semi; I'm afraid is doesn't stand out. It would have been so great if we were drawn last or something...

I liked very much 2004 & 2005 dutch entries!
This year the song is ok,and it would be good to see this in the final.
The plus is the draw, becouse they are after the ballad of Austria, and this is good for televoting.
In the juries,i think it doesnt deserve less than 12th place.
Good luck!

It will be difficult to qualify. We are not a real eurovision country last years. I mean, what kind of song for example Russia sends it will always qualify because.. its Russia!
So we have arrears before the contest begins compared to populair eurovision countries.

Since 2003... omg!

Never Alone is much better than Sha-la-lie ofc and 2011 songs are not as strong as 2010's. This year every country has chance to qualify. I hope I'll watch 3JS in the final. They need a good show in sf though.

Oikotimes reports that Netherlands want to be part of Big Countries, and become Big-6.

I also read something like that, but I think this will not happen. The Netherlands is a very small country and it would be very expensive for us to buy our place in the final.
And personally, I don't like the whole idea... I don't know.. A place in the final doesn't guarantee a high score. If we will be part of the 'Big-6' and we send a crappy song every year, we will end up last for sure and I don't know what is better; not going through to the final or have a guaranteed place in the final and end up last every year again... I still think that if you have a very good song, going through to the final isn't that hard. We just have to keep trying.
