Re: The Big Tournament 2013 - Starts on the 22nd of May!
I just don't get the "I don't like old songs" way of thinking. Where do you draw the line for what is old? Is it the instruments you don't like? The crackling noise of the recording? The style or sound of a specific genre? Each decade sounds vastly different.
For me personally the contest isn't divided into pre-2000s and the 2000s/2010s. For me there's the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. Each decade has amazing songs and each decade has horrible songs. I'm sure if people took the time to actually
listen to the songs, look past the orchestrated old-fashioned instrumentations, lack of stage shows and whatever characteristics older entries tend to have, that they will find great melodies and (if you care about such things) wonderful lyrics and truly amazing classics. And if you'd strip away all the glitz and the dazzling glamor of modern entries, the fancy overproduced recordings and pumping beats, are you really left with timeless songs you'll want to listen to for years to come?
That so many new ESC fans seem so unwilling to listen to (and embrace) the old entries is so baffling to me. It would be the same as if The Beatles were still making records, but people today only care to listen to their latest album, not even remotely interested in their past records (and haven't even heard all of their classic songs) because "they don't like old songs", but they still call themselves Beatles fans.
I don't even like the Beatles, but just wanted to draw a comparison.
Then what is the right game for them? There is no other option. If the forum organised a game for newer songs that would be fine, but seeing as this is the only tournament of It's size, then I'll vote as I please and If I end up getting kicked out for ignoring old songs, then so be it.
There was the 21st century game last year, which I'm sure will be back this year. And if you feel that one wasn't or isn't satisfactory, you could always try and get people to start up a proper new songs tournament.
