Re: The Big Tournament 2013 - Starts on the 22nd of May!

I didn't play last year, but yes, you're right. But it's quite difficult though. In the end we were born when we were born and that affects our taste. We can't change that fact.

While this may be true for most people, it isn't true for me. Most of my favorite songs (Eurovision or non-Eurovision) are in fact from before I was born.

7. The purpose of this tournament is to appreciate and celebrate all songs starting with 1956 all the way to 2013. If you’re a person who only enjoys music from a particular decade only, this may not be the right game for you. It affects the outcome for those who want to give all songs a fair chance.

I completely agree and I think it is largely a result of people not respecting rule n°1:

"Please listen to all songs before sending us your votes."

Re: The Big Tournament 2013 - Starts on the 22nd of May!

I've just checked this thread, read the rules, looked up who last year's winner was and realised I couldn't possibly participate if I wanted to. I mean, Luxembourg 1965?

I listened to it and listened too to a few other successful examples from the 1960s I didn't remember and come on! Those songs were utterly ridiculous, they had childish melodies and were sung in childish, horrible, hardly in tune voices.

One could of course claim those were the trends of the moment, only they weren't, not really. In those days The Beatles were already singing, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin for god's sake! I mean, what was eurovision doing?!!!

How could anyone even take it seriously?

It's not that today's ESC is high quality or modern at that, but it has came a looong way. How can any esc entry today be compared with that crap? Even this year's macedonia sounds like a masterpiece

Well, have fun anyway!!! :D

You got it all wrong, nobody's demanding from you to like songs from every year or even decade. Myself, I'm not a fan of the vast majority of 50's and 60's ESC songs, but I like many 70's, 80's and 90's. This rule you mentioned is to discourage people who vote for only 21st century songs, and believe me there were quite a number of them last time.

This rule you mentioned is to discourage people who vote for only 21st century songs, and believe me there were quite a number of them last time.

But there are people who do exactly the opposite. A mainstream pop song from the 80s is considered as "classic" while a mainstream pop from the 00s or 10s is considered as cheap by some people.

And we had very few songs from the 00s and 10s in the final last year. I'm totally against banning people who prefer songs from a specific decade as soon as they listen to all the songs and vote fairly. Nobody can dislike all old songs and like all new songs. All people last year voted for songs from all periods more or less.

I'm all for banning people who will come here and vote in the rounds that they have their most favorite song(s) and ignore the other rounds. As well as people who will systematically vote for countries and not songs. But banning someone because he prefers let's say 80s songs and doesn't like 00s and 10s, or the other way around? It's ridiculous.

Lol, show me one person who voted for oldies and didn't vote for 21st century songs

And of course there were people who voted in 80-90% for 21st century songs, and the non-21st century they voted for were usually winners like Abba, etc.

Yaaay can't wait! I will probably not be too active during the "elimination-stage" but I will make sure to vote more often in the QFs and later :)

Yes, I can understand that, but the fact remains that Luxembourg 1965 won  What kind of people can have brought that to happen, one wonders. I didn't know it, had never heard it before that I remember, but I believe I could have gone on being a much a happier person had I remained entirely ignorant :D

I don't think I can actually enjoy any song prior to 1991 anyway and that's because I Anixi came along

It's your subjective opinion though. I for one think Luxembourg 1965 is an all-time ESC classic. And older entries tend to be advantaged in the later stages of the Tournament because people keep voting for everything in the 21st century, which makes entries from earlier decades stand out.

Well I agree on that BUT, Spain and Israel are my two favourite ESC countries for example. Of course I'll be voting for most of their entries...

I don't understand this attitude toward old songs. We don't need breathtaking productions and autotune to appreciate a quality song like Luxembourg 1965.

Whoohooo so excited! :D xcheer

I'd like to emphasize this rule, due to the results last year:

Exactly! I admit I'm not familiar with most 50s and 60s tunes but it's a great way to discover unknown gems from that decade!

I love this game xcheer

This will be my 3rd time participating I think... it's really a good way of keeping this forum alive post-ESC season and prior the new one starts in September

Also, this game is really a great way to get to know the contest and revisit and discover songs and get new favs along the way. I've already listened through all ESC entries that have been since 1956- , but for obvious reasons one can't keep them all in mind, but this game makes you revisit them all.

Re: The Big Tournament 2013 - Starts on the 22nd of May!

This time I'll keep statistics for myself, not like last year xsnooty

And I expect my favorites to be different, since some songs that have been my favorites now don't seem so appealing to me, while some songs I totally ignored might start growing on me. :D

Statistics is a major part of this game!

I love when people do little break-downs on how many songs they voted for from each decade, how many they got through, what countries turns out to be their favs etc :)
