This is a rather interesting tune, but it's not perfect and I'm gonna get to it's flaws later.
First off, I have to say I approached this with absolutely zero expectations. And heading from Zöe to Rykka was a natural move, I had to see if there was anyone who could match the Austrian. I must say, although "The Last of Our Kind" was a bit of a surprise to me in terms of quality, "Loin d'ici" is still the superior song. Let me explain why.
My immediate reaction to the song was "Hip Hop beats?". I'm talking about the drums. While they aren't THAT terrible, they are cheap and reminds me of these basic preset drums that people used to toy around with in "Dance eJay" fifteen years ago. This is one of the flaws; The drums are cheesy and doesn't quite fit the melody.
Rykka har an interesting voice, it's full of wild fierceness in it. This is great, she's going full-force, however, this is almost completely ruined by the horrible pitch-correcting/vocoder that absolutely grates on me. Why did the producers decided to ruin her voice with all that bollocks? Because it's "hip"? Not sounding "perfect" enough? Come on. The effect is taking it's worst toll on the most climatic part of the song; "the last of our K-i-i-i-i-i-ind", with the "i-i-i"'s being chopped up by the vocoder. TERRIBLE! However, the slight reverb effect (world collide-ide-ide..) on her voice works well, and the drums seem to get better as the song progresses, even though the occasional "BOOOOMS!" in the background is annoying and unnecessary.
While she has a very interesting "smokey" voice, she isn't the best singer out there, but good enough to stay away from the generic garbage called auto-tuning. Sadly, the producers didn't realized that and had to slap on some "studio magic" on to her beautiful voice. I'm terribly sorry about that. That's why I hope she kills the song in the semi's, just to show the producers who's the boss. Because this deserves a ticket to the bl.. final.
