Sanna won the public vote in her own country verses the youngest, hippest song going. If she won by the maturer vote then, you can't underestimate it. It's not just going to be young people voting on the night of Eurovision. Also I can't quote exactly but I read the average jury member age this year was somewhere in the late 30's (?), I might be wrong. It's not like she's come out and sung a Disney balled either. Her song is powerful and hard hitting (with modern synths) whilst still containing the twinkly piano verses. All bases are covered. After watching that semi final performance, she's definitely the one to beat.

Spot on! Ace also initially had troubles to be taken seriously. A situation that very well could have happened in Eurovision as well.

Apart from Sweden, I think Hungary still have chances from the ones from the first semi; they are not out of the questions yet. I also think Ukraine may suprise in the final. I dont think any of these 3 are any clearer candidates for the win than the others. Even more so the running order taken into account.
Armenia definitely is out of the question - and I am very happy for it.
Tomorrow after the second semi we'll have a clearer view.

Hungary were a pleasant surprise last night. I've been vocal about the song in the past but I must admit it all came together well on screen and Andras sung well. I can't see his song being a jury magnet however.

Ukraine were also a nice surprise. I REALLY dislike their song but it was great to watch. Visually a great performance and I thought Maria did well.

Been reading through this thread, apreciating the good general reasoning and the articulate comments, distributing likes amidst and finding it all very instructive. I was about to tick a like on this one too untill I saw this bit. No like it NONO

Well; many of this years possible winners, or the ones that has been high in the ratings or at the bookmakers are out of my own top 10. Both Hungary, UK and Sweden just misses my top 10; but are still on the left part of my table. Armenia on the other hand....it's way down my list. I still dont know how this can touch people. I can accept all the other possible winners; but I would take an Armenia victory hard this year...

You'd live. Myself, I've been taking every victory hard since Rybak and I'm still here

I know what you mean of course. Everything you said I could repost regarding the UK, with the exception that ALL the others are in my top 10 ;)

Free translation of chosen parts

SVT-intern: Is there anything for us to worry about tonight?
CB: No no no, Sanna is safe as bank-vault! And the choir girls are the best there is. So no really ...
- unless we get some more of those crazy lights hahaha
SVT-intern: Have you received any reactions of Sanna from the other delegations?
CB: Sanna get very good unison words from all delegations, but there are other countries who get such words as well.
SVT-intern: Why is Sanna pictured as the favourite by the press and also by the ESC fans and "topping" among the betting firms?
CB: I think it's due to Sanna being a very skilled and experienced artist with a very good song. She's also well known among the ESC fans and has being in the game for a long time.

etc etc sorry. There're also pretty good interviews with Sanna and Fredrik Kempe. Sharp SVT-intern. :D

edit: Fredrik Kempe - what a nice guy! I never would have thought ...

Thank you for your effort. It seems that I have to begin Swedish lessons :D There are so many great programmes about Eurovision that SVT is broadcasting.

Hmmm - almost all the possible winners in your top 10 - lucky you! hehe...
I have to trust Israel now... (Well, Silent Storm is also in my unofficial top 10, but since I normally dont rate my own country, Norway is not in my official top 10).

- And yes, I would live with an Armenias victory. If you read my post I didnt say I couldnt "live with it"... actually I had first written just that, but changed it to "take it hard"...

It's very possible especially as the other favourites have also drawn the first half. She's now become the bookies favourite by a comfortable margin after last nights performance. I'd say only Norway or the Netherlands have the power to stop her.
Agree, it's like some people really think that those who has won the last 5-6 years wouldn't have done that with an earlier running number xfacepalm

I'm pretty sure Rybak, Loreen and Emmelie de Forest would have won with a early draw too

Thank God Sanna dropped those silly pants she wore in MF for an actual dress!

She was a bit shaky at first but all in all a solid performance, and eventhough the ballad is very ESC/MF standard, I still think we got one of the strongest songs this year.

I still miss Ace though :(

By the way, it's quite possible, we will get #13 in the final directly after the commercial break. Because of the light podium, they have both during the rehearsals and last night very tough getting it on place in 30 seconds. Something tells me that they want to make sure it will be placed and installed perfectly with a larger amount of time, so I wouldn't be surprised if we will get #13 for Saturday.

Just speculations though, what do you think about that?

I discovered the songs of the 1st semi yesterday , so I'll give my opinion on the Swedish entry this year :

Well, as every year, Sweden is overrated among eurovision fans. However, after having listened to all the songs from Melodifestivalen 2014 except "Undo", I can say that it was the best choice imo. Even better than Busy doin' nothing, which more original but kinda annoying if you ask me. When I knew that Sanna was chosen, I listened to her previous attempts... and then I started to fear "Undo" would be as bland as the other ones. But no! "Undo" is a nice song, nicely sung and the melody is sweet when she says the word "undo". The stage presentation was effective with the lights surrounding her, no fireworks (that's a plus) and her black outfit fitted very well with all of that. However, I agree it is not original, but not bland either. The performance was perfect yesterday, nice emotions.

So I'm glad that she qualified (even though there was no doubt about it) and I'll enjoy a second performance from her during the final. I think she'll end up on the right-side of the scoreboard since there are much better and more striking songs. But after a bland song at home last year and not much to choose from the Melodifestivalen this year, that's a nice improvement. Good luck to you guys, see you on Saturday.

Or perhaps when there's a commercial break earlier on in the show.

It's never a good thing to start after commercials :(

Perhaps we will get a position before a commercial break, as they also had issues getting the lights off the stage. In that case, I'll be very happy :D

I wasn't really a fan of this song, but the live performance convinced me. I can see Sweden as a winner again.
