Gah... I'm not a fan. They've removed a lot of the power from the instrumentation, including most of the background brass melodies that I loved; they've turned the vocal mix from a big anthemic mix of singers into just Miki with some quiet backing vocals; and changed up a bunch of little other things in a way I'm not much a fan of.
The end result is that it's gone from a big in-your-face party vibe to a much more stripped-back, radio-friendly midtempo pop sound. And while that might work for some people, I'm not one of them.
This is the second year in a row now that Spain's revamped a song in my top 10 to push it down into "still fine but I don't love it any more" territory. The quiet and calm ballad had unnecessary elements added it to drag it up to midtempo territory, and now the faster more energetic La Venda has things stripped out to push that more towards a mainstream sound as well. Why do so many revamps end up flattening out the strengths and quirks of a song and pushing it towards midtempo instead of, I don't know, emphasising said strengths more to have a proper stand-out entry? Bah.
Now, it's not that I hate revamps as a whole, which some people seem to assume whenever anyone takes issue with a revamp changing a song's direction. Albania's new version sounds promising this year, for example, while last year Azerbaijan/Switzerland/Moldova/Montenegro/Malta did a good job with improving what they were given, and Italy gave a master class on how to shave half a minute off your song without wrecking it. It's just... there are always a few countries every year that revamp their song to be more middle-of-the-road and unremarkable, and I never quite get it.
This is still a decent entry, don't get me wrong, and it could be improved again with staging and Miki's live energy. But for now, I'm downgrading from 8 points to 6, verging on 5.
