re: SLOVENIA 2014 - Tinkara Kovač - Sped (Round & Round)
I just realized that I haven't written anything about the songs yet. Here we go:
1. Omar Naber - I Won't Give Up
The songs starts off really good, but the chorus is a huge disappointment for me. The first part of it isn't really melodic, while the second part's a little bit better. Guitar solo sounds good, but - like we know - his band won't be able play live on EMA/ESC so it'll surely look phony. The last chorus is pretty energetic, but I'm not sure if it makes up for the lack of energy of the rest of the song. Not bad, really, but I expected more from him.
2. Samuel & Nermin - Masquearade
This is the song that could benefit the most by the live performance, IMO. About the track: it's clear that it's a song, made for Eurovision. It's nicely built, it gets better and better and it could leave some impact on the ESC stage. However, it's honestly not my cup of tea. It sounds too dramatic, even for ESC.
3. Bilbi - To Ni Blues
I very rarely like Bilbi's songs and this is "just another", average Bilbi song. Funny lyrics, mediocre melody. It's definitely different than other ESC songs, but different doesn't always mean better, you know.
4. Nude - It's Gonna Be Ok
This song sounds OK to me, but that's pretty much it. The production seems kind of cheap, at least in this radio-rip that I'm listening to. I don't really enjoy the lyrics either. It sounds pretty repetitive. Like I said, there's nothing majorly wrong with this song, but there's nothing that would make me pick up my phone and vote for it either.
5. Rudi & Elevators - Tja
I never liked anything by Rudi besides "Zadnji Dan", which was a greaaaat song (mostly thanks to Alya and Plestenjak though). I was positively surprised by this song, because it sounds good to me, BUT it's definitely not a song that I would send to Copenhagen. I like the fact that it makes me move on my chair.
6. Tinkara Kovač - Spet / Round and Round
That's my favourite song this year, BY FAAAR. It's amazing: I like the flute in the beginning, those quick verses just before the chorus and the chorus - which - sounds even better in Slovene. I'm 90% sure that this will be our entry. I don't know why, but I have "Rändajad" performance in my head while listening to this. It's not really similar, because it's not that mystical and there's flute instead of a violine, but I still think that Tinkara could pull something similar off on ESC stage. I'm just hoping they won't do anything stupid with her performance. Keep it simple, but effective.
7. Muff - Let Me Be Myself
I really like Senidah's voice (unlike Kaja
), but I don't like the fact that she makes English sound so ... weird. It's soo hard to hear what she's singing, which really bothers me. The verses sound really good and they're followed by what sounds like a good chorus in the beginning, but it goes down / gets worse, instead of sounding better and better. The oh-oh-oh part is pretty catchy though.
My ranking:
1. Tinkara Kovač
2. Omar Naber
3. Samuel & Nermin
4. Muff
5. Rudi & The Elevators
6. Nude
7. Bilbi
