Well it's not really surprising. I've been noticing that this meme/viral video thing is really becoming an ESC trend that often results in good placings in recent years, Netta's hype and win is the most obvious but several others, like Moldova climbing to third place and several entries this year, The Roop to some extent and especially Dadi count as well. Darude didn't present himself as a joke, he performed a normal song as a normal artist and so he didn't benefit from that.

I guess the Russians, who clearly want to win again, understand that this is something that works, especially since the more "typical" of their entries, like the Sergey ones, didn't quite manage the top result and they have to have a wider appeal beyond just their diaspora and few friendly countries under the combined voting system.

I've lived in fear of something large and phallic randomly attacking me ever since you played it to me that one day at a nice family friendly plug.dj party. I needed several showers of holy Voda afterwards to cleanse my soul. I still haven't quite recovered and now the whole of Europe is about to be visually and aurally shaken in ways similar.
