Maybe sending a good song and not only rely on stage effects could be a good start?
To be fair, Sweden's song is something I would consider dated and "boring" too (don't get me wrong, I really like Sweden this year, the song is in my top 10). Let's say [instead of boring] both songs are rather unexciting but in a good way. Sweden is the happy, Russia the sad one. But a sad song is usually more able to evoke stronger and deeper feelings. I agree stage effects must be limited and not overloaded and I once wrote I could understand why juries let Sergey down in 2016 when it comes to the visuals (but then again, they would have had to downgrade Sweden last year too because it was almost musicvideo-like) but the song was GREAT! And it hasn't been rewarded.
This year he did not use more staging effects than others.
