It's a party after all. Of course people will vote for the happiest songs. Now we have a bunch of ballads and 3D-mapping stagings of songs that pretend to be musical masterpieces but in the same time they are not entertaining anymore.

TBH - maybe that's why I like "You are the only one" - it's cheesy and stupid but entertaining and funny. And the most important thing - it gives me a good mood.

ESC wasn't born to be intended as a party, though. In 1956 there certainly weren't party songs at ESC. And my opinion is that ESC should come back to its origins, but that's another topic that I already heavily discussed with lavieenrose :p

Yeah, because juries obviously vote just for music compositions and never voted for countries. Oh, wait, that exactly what happened last year.

Actually last year results are more of a proof that we need juries rather than getting rid of them.
The :it: song was too kitschy and it got nearly nowhere after the contest and I din't hear on the radio or watched the music video on the Tv.
While :se: was the complete opposite the general public like it and it was every were during the summer and not all winners achieve this sort of fame.
So the juries even with their current problems (which are fixable) still managed to pick a song that was liked by the general public, while the tele-voters went for a song that people outside the bubble didn't care much about (yet alone buying it).

Honey, ESC is a party and it's not for serious music. If you want serious music, go to an opera or something.

A party it might be, but it still involves a lot of hard work from a lot of people who go to extreme lengths so that everything is perfect. Up to a point, that should be taken seriously.

I also believe that it's not a coincidence that my country stayed away from ESC exactly in those years, and came back only when the contest regained again some of its credibility. Italy is known as the country of music, and I certainly couldn't imagine it participating along with entries like Switzerland 2004, Slovenia 2006 or Ireland 2008, to name a few.

Well, the german song of 1956 was entitled "So geht das jede Nacht" (That's how it goes every night) and describes a woman who parties with different guys every night, dancing, having fun etc. It's boogie-style so by the standards of 1956 a party song. Yes, already in 1956 there certainly WAS a party song at ESC.

ESC is what you make of it. I consider it to be about the music and not a party at all. If that's all it was then it's fanbase wouldn't be so large.

I see no contradiction between the ESC being a music contest and a party. Ever been on a good party without music?

Russia and Azerbaijan also posted full videos of first rehearsals even though it was forbidden. Azerbaijan even streamed it live. EBU doesn't seem to mind, for some unknown reason..

I was expecting something more impressive tbh.

Also, I wonder why they decided not to zoom in on the screen so that the edges wouldn't be visible? That's what I assumed they would do.

is it "legal" to put the entire tv perf before the SF ? omg they actually don't care at all

Btw just simple things : the song is still effective, the staging too but i actually thought that the camera angles will prevent us to see the actual backdrop (Sweden's back drop last year was well hidden, even if you could see it on big shots) here, he's litterally touching it.
second thing, he missed some notes but who cares about singing now  there's a chance for Azerbaijan to sail through tonight with awful vocals.

That's most likely the main contender for the trophy but I wouldn't bet all my money on it. That's so exciting to have no clear winner.

Yeah, it is a way too hectic, I liked it more when it was a still picture from rehearsals. But on tv looks really too much. And I guess he is a way too nervous, his facial expressions are pretty strange.

Too much and yet somehow underwhelming. Too many ideas and elements and they don't fit together. It all comes across very calculated. And like you commented on his facial expression, I think it's because he's not enjoying himself but rather thinking about the 'next' step he needs to perform.

Of course we're splitting hair at this point and I don't think the average viewer will care nearly enough. But at the same time, I don't think the average viewer will LOVE it all that much either.

Hm, I don't like the fact I can see the rest of the stage while he performs with his own screen.

Last year Georgian and Russian performances were also out before the actual live show.

Odd. I assumed the camera angles would be better to cover up the effects, but it's all so obvious that it dents the impact this performance SHOULD have.

Also, when people go to the opera the intention is they be entertained. What's more serious about opera? It's just as much of a party as ESC, really as long as you take pleausure in it. Maybe just a different level lof musical education but it's just the same thing xshrug

This song is not my winner and, honestly, I would be really disappointed if it won on Saturday. It is a typical Pop song, nothing special. There are way more original entrys (Armenia, Ukraine, Netherlands etc.).

That semi-final jury performance does not scream winner to me. Like I said before, overrated.
