What did I miss about the Portugese broadcasters disagreeing with the Swedish ones? I completely missed this drama?

Simply put, Portugal withdrew from both Sweden-hosted modern edition of the contest. They were for "financial reasons", but it seems like a fishy excuse.

It's not a fishy excuse, can people stop with this nonsense.
In 2013 RTP was still reeling financially from the 2008 crisis, and budget cuts plus bad results led them to withdraw for one year, at the same time as many other countries did.
In 2016, RTP withdrew stating that they would take a year break to rework on their formula for Eurovision, and that's exactly what happened, and with good results.
RTP still fully broadcasted both editions, even while not taking part.

Someone that could be invited to take part in next year's nf is Ana Lua Caiano, she would fit perfectly in the slot of artists that mix traditional and modern music, think Bandua, Karetus and Conan Osiris, plus she is working in a new album, so competing would be a good way to promote it:

I'm kind of interested in seeing what form of composer selection were used in the last five Festival da Cancao. So here's a little breakdown of it.

YearNo. Of composersBy InvitationOther methodsWinner
201916141 Masterclass
1 open call
By Invitation
202016141 Masterclass
1 open call
By Invitation
202120182 open callBy Invitation
202220164 open callBy Invitation
202320155 open callOpen call

It seems the number of invitation decreases and more open call spots are provided. Mimicat is the first winner in the last five years to be selected outside of RTP's invitation. In 2024 they might add more open call spots or attain the same system.

Escportugal recently reported that Pedro Mafama was invited by RTP to compete in previous editions of Festival da Canção, he declined has he wouldn't be allowed to use autotune, but due to his most recent album having little to no autotune it's possible that he may accept the invite in the future.

Hi, Eurofans! I'm songwriter and big fan of ESC. My dream is to write a song that will sound from the Eurovision stage. Perhaps you know local artists who would like to take part in this competition. I would offer them a song to sing.

I am not optimistic about Portugal...I don't know why, but they seem to have a problem with Sweden.
So, a withdrawal is very likely to happen.

RTP just confirmed our participation in Malmo 2024.
Festival da Canção will be our national selection. 14 invited composers and 6 for the open submission.

Portugals era of boycotting Sweden has officially ended.

Dunno - I'm slightly disappointed by this decision, tbh.
:pt: boycotting everything which involves :se: hosting in Eurovision was kinda iconic as hell...

but I'm also happy to see them "continue taking part" because their last entries/performances were really entertaining to great.

You´re disappointed that a country that´s part ot the ESC world for such a long time is taking part?? Really??

They didn´t boycott in 2000 btw, they couldn´t take part due to their bad result in 1999.

It wasn't a boycott. RTP withdrew in 2013 due to financial issues and in 2016 because they wanted to take a break to rethink and revamp the national selection format. It's a coincidence that Sweden was the host both times. In 2018 SVT helped RTP with their ESC hosting even.

Nah. It's fandom's canon that :pt: was the bravest to challenge SVT's meddling with ESC's rules.
I don't accept any other "reasons" haha
