Oh my goodness, I'd forgotten about his preachy speech. He could have surely found a better way to express his joy at winning rather than throwing shade on all of the more showy entries. And no-one can argue that it's because English isn't his first language as he spoke extremely eloquently and in an assured manner - he knew exactly what he was saying, and I agree with Jeansy that it came off as elitist.

Pop music today does not instantly equal disposable and "fast food" - Bulgaria and (dare I say it) Belgium proved that tonight.

But I'm not labouring any point here - Salvador came first with the juries and first with the public vote so the song clearly hit the right note across the board. I just wish it had been used at the climax of an old-faahioned romantic movie rather than in an international song contest as I'd probably have appreciated it much more in that setting.

I don't think he was throwing shade, he was making a point about songs having meaning which in the music world today has diminished to say the least

Music no matter the genre has a place at Eurovision. I get what you're saying, but music is music and we should be able to enjoy it wherever it turns up and surprises us. This kind of stuff does work well in old movies and such, but it also lives and breathes outside of them. Jazz can be enjoyed anywhere.

He sounded like a snobbish elitist prick, I for one will not watch next year.

That's called cutting off the nose to spite the face. You're a fan of the contest but now you won't watch because you don't like what the winning artist said? You're going to miss out on all the fun and music.

It didn't come across like that to be honest. So long as others have interpreted it in a more positive manner then all is not lost for him but I didn't like the taste that his winner's speech left in my mouth at all. Music is for all emotions and all occasions - not just for high emotion sentiments like this one.

Regarding his speech, I'll just paste something I wrote in a Skype convo.

I may not agree with him, but I acknowledge that:

1) He most likely got his message across a lot harsher than intended -- he seems to be on the aspergers spectrum to me, and I'm reading that he apparently used some kind of portuguese idiom which loses its subtle meaning when translated word-for-word to English.

2) I prefer this a thousand times more than the "omg thank you europe!!! you are amazing!!!" we get all the time. You know, I like speeches that people can actually agree and disagree with, so I don't mind the edge Salvador has added. :D

I am overjoyed by the win. I was originally a doubter of this song, but Salvador, Luisa and their musical magic captured my heart in the semi and the final. I have always wanted Portugal to win as it is my favorite country in Eurovision. When the 12, 10 and 8 points started pouring in for Portugal, I couldn't believe it! The moment finally happened for Portugal, and with a heartfelt song to boot!

Thank you for this wonderful winning entry, Portugal. I'm excited for what Portugal will show us next year. xyaay

So in the end (after absolutely hating the song at the beginning and quite liking it during the past week) I'm not sure about my feelings for :pt: this year! Well I'm glad you won for the first time after all those years so congrats from me! :)

I think the part about not needing fireworks was the only thing there someone if they chose to could directly take offense to (Poor Anja was probably weeping into her cereal this morning). The "fast food" music comment you'd only take offense to if you consider your song to be exactly that. Salvador gave an honest speech and his life is music, he lives it, and he obviously feels very passionately about the state we're in and where we're heading, and so he spoke out. It was his moment. He just won the contest with a recording breaking victory, even toppling "Fairytale" if we use the old voting system. As far as i'm aware, he's never given names (unlike the Estonian couple). Salvador is just a man that cares very deeply about music, and actually he enjoys all kinds. I recall even reading an interview where he expresses his fondness for hip-hop.

I like as well how it wasn't an "omg love you, you're all so great" speech, and is something as you say we can agree and disagree with. I understand the people who didn't like it. Personally, it felt fricking amazing when he said it and I was in full agreement with him. He gave me a brain boner. It was like "finally someone saying exactly how I feel and to the biggest audience possible".

I have a mild Asperger too. We unintentionally tend to stun and offend people. Happens to me all the time. But I embrace it, because it makes me look beneath things and comprehend and assess complicated matter quickly, although it complicates social affairs quite a bit, also at the job.

I love :pt: and it's a really deserving victory. Congratulations Portugal and I love to see how Lisboa will handle the pressure of hosting , but I'm sure you'll give us an amazing show.

Now on the winner's speech.. :? It doesn't sound like he "lives music" and "enjoys all kind of music". xshrug Liking different genres of music (like hip hop) isn't the same as enjoying all kind of musics, certainly not when giving a speech like that. I can love music with a meaning, I can love music without a meaning.. it's all about context. And I hate it when someone makes an opinion sound like a truth.

We will slay it xyaay

I'm still amazed how we got 12 points all across Europe! I never expected for the nordic or the balcan bloc to vote so high on us...

Hotels in Lisbon are quite expensive, so I might consider flying to Madrid, driving to Lisbon and sleeping in Badajoz.

Lisbon is renowned for the hostels. They are very very good and come cheaper than the hotels. But you also know there's more cities in Portugal right? You don't need to stay in Spain :p

I remember the morning after FdC ended. I didn't tear up listening to the song... But I read the comments and I cried, because I was so stunned by what this song brought out in so many people, it was just sincerely beautiful. It reminded me that this is what we're here for in the end. I admit that I wasn't into this song from the beginning, for the first time I wasn't really paying attention and after I started to love it, I still wasn't as passionate about it as some people. But what this song means to people and how it makes people feel is incredible and something I haven't really seen in the Eurovision context to this extent. It was truly special from the start. It's amazing to sort of follow from the sidelines and recognise what this win means (and to see the same kind of happiness that I felt after Jamala's win last year). As for his speech... I agree. The pop music industry has been down in the dumps for a long while now and personally I can't stand listening to Top 40 without getting a headache after a few minutes. But thing is... And I'm sure this is what he means as well, we need the fun music too, of course we do. Sometimes it's okay to have mindless music and a nice beat to forget your worries for a while. But as with fast food, a little sometimes does no harm, a lot of the same thing every day does... And the easy fast food pop music we consume right now is ridiculously much. But his win does symbolise something nice. I love Salvador & Luisa for their authentic beautiful souls, I love this song for bringing something beautiful and nostalgic back and touching people from the core and I love you, Portugal for staying so strong and true to yourselves all these years and bringing this true shining gem to the competition, finally getting your well-deserved win. xheart

I just want to congratulations to :pt: for their well deserved win! xcheer I'm so happy for :pt: as country because I so love Portugal! This will be so exciting esc in Lisbon (most probably xheart xcheer). I'm not that big fan of Salvador's song but completely admit he left me to another world during his 3 minutes! xheart After being so much times underrated and after so much struggling with esc, if someone deserved so much esc joy, it is definitely Portugal! xcheer Well done and can't wait for esc in Portugal!

So bittersweet feeling : I'm glad Portugal won, I acknowledge the fact that Salvador gave a "magic moment" on TV (and in the arena) and that was sure one of the best songs even if it's not my cup of tea. I guess that was the sweet part.

Now the bitter :

I'm really angry at someone saying "let's bring good music" (that was not his speech but that's what he wanted to say). First of all, Eurovision is about ALL KIND OF MUSIC. Eurovision is the most mainstream subversive show of ALL TIME. You can find in the most silly songs the most politicals and engaged messages. When heteronormative society decide all year long what we should listen to, eurovision is there to bring us some balkan divas, some romanian Yodelling, a simple portugal guy, a freaked out belgian, because that's what Eurovision is all about : showing a side of our society that could shine for a fucking night.

Everybody, every song, everything has a seat in Eurovision and not only "Quality music" decided by a minor group of people that truly think they are better people cause they're making "music with a meaning". No. Amar Pelos Dois belongs to Eurovision as Yodel It belongs too. And fuck every elitist brat that could think there is a difference between songs. Celebrate Diversity was destroyed in this winner's speech.

Few things:
- new countries are waking up
- Greece is no more
- Ireland is no more
- north-south fight is obvious: Italy vs Sweden
- the last wake up call for Spain
- Ukraine will have traumas every single time when they send males. If ever again.
- watch out for central European countries: Hungary will win sooner or later. Or Poland.
- the Netherlands and Belgium are fresh high quality air. Who would have said it a few years ago??
- the Balkans , the EX YU specifically, should get its shit together
- watch out for France next year.
