It is when you have portuguese and brazilian portuguese, etc. xshrug

The contest isn't doing its job if people can just choose different dialects like that.

I'm for option 1 and 2. The secret contest is quite difficult because some members can contact between them in private and we can never know that.

I'm on the fence here. One language per edition could work against smaller, more obscure languages.

Also, what about imaginary languages or songs sung in dialects that are considered part of two different languages? (something like this Lach dialects - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). Eh, I might be thinking too much into unimportant details atm...

Imaginary languages would obviously included. (Not sure if they would be in a generic only 1 imaginary language allowed per edition group or if there would be allowed several different imaginary languages in an edition). About stuff like Lach dialect. Well the article says that by consensus it is part of Czech language. Wouldn't mind that in those kind of specific cases it could be either sent as Czech or Polish though.

That's why you would totally not allow those. If you have to indiacte a country (Brazil here), to indiacte a version of a language (Portuguese here), it is obviously not a separate language.

About the languages and dialects. I would be very strict about the European languages. Eg totally not allowing multiple English and Spanish entries. I could also consider doing no separate Romanian and Moldovan and no separate Serbo-Croatians for example. I would be more relaxed about non European ones (which likely have no big demand anyway)

To me, all three options seem like something that would be fun for maybe a couple of editions only, but a bit boring in the long run. Like someone said, it reminds me of spin-off editions.

I don't think having a contest, that is constantly changing with new languages/new countries every edition, will take the load off from FSC, NSC or WV that much (if at all). The Secret Song Contest might be the best option in this case, but perhaps tweaked a bit. This type of contest would allow you to send any song you wanted and the contest wouldn't need to be so heavily controlled and mod-run (since nobody would have to check to make sure your entry is eligible).

The difference is that Romanian is official language of Moldova whereas Serbian is in Serbia and Croatian in Croatia.

But there is no moldovan language. :? It's not like serbo-croatian, 'moldovan' does not even have new/different words than romanian. Plus they did this recently: Chisinau Recognizes Romanian As Official Language

Tell that to people who themself claim they are speaking Moldovan, the people who made the constitution of Moldova or Transnistrian officials and you can see a different opinion. 60% of Moldovans claim to speak Moldovan while only 15% claim to speak Romanian.

In case of a language contest, I'm completely against excluding languages for whatever reason.

There's no point in having a language contest if people will send the same languages they do in WV/NSC anyway

An anything contest would probably be the most exciting (and definitely most limitless) concept.

1. Some people claim they are speaking sindarin, but that wouldn't change the fact that sindarin does not exist as a real language.
2. Constitution of Moldova as I posted before, recognizes romanian as the official language now
3. Transnistria is a special case, mostly because it's an 'extra' territory that has been annexed by Moldova after USSR break-up. They are 0% romanian.

I think that if the language option wins then English, Spanish, etc. should not be allowed. Reason? Songs in those languages would win every edition, just like French and English dominated ESC during the official language rule.

Also, a note for the "secret" option - I bet that some of the forum friends would tell each other secretly what song they sent anyway...

Well I think banning some certain languages completly could be a little too arbitrary perhaps (not totally against it either). If there are let's say 40-60 people (which is more or less the number of people in contests here). Then having around a 10th picking big unoriginal languages every edition would be quite bearable though.
