New official country names used in Eurovision 2019?

In Turkish we don't have a translation for Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
Everyone simply says Macedonia.

My suggestion is to keep official name as FYR Macedonia, but using Macedonia in speech language, just like Turkey's name officially being Republic of Turkey.
But of course Greeks will never accept it, so in whatever way I want them to solve this problem.

Imagine Macedonia winning the contest someday, saying "l'ex-République yougoslave de Macédoine" each time would cause delays for the ending time of show.

I always say just "Macedonia", which is also the official name used in Sweden... this conflict, which let's face it is started by Greece, is just silly... I don't agree that FYR should be used, it's a disgusting name really... imagine if Russia would start to force Ukraine call itself "Former Soviet Republic of Ukraine" for example

The real problem in this dispute people is not even the name itself! It would be easy to agree on Northern Macedonia but it's a very complicated problem and not that simple as you think. The name FYROM has already Macedonia in it! Biggest problem is that Greece wants an erga omnes name but FYROM does not accept it! Erga omnes name means a name that FYROM will use in interior and in the foreign! FYROM wants a different name for foreign (more likely Northern Macedonia) but in the interior they want to keep using Macedonia! As you the problem is not the name anymore.

Currently some media say that the deal is close and others say that everything is near a dead-end! Maybe our goverment plans to retire and accept on what FYROM wants and maybe not. People and most opposition disagree in both countries. We will see!

Czech Republic all the way, Czechia is so Lithuanian of a thing they can keep to themselves. Republic will stay in my heart.

On an unrelated note (or is it?), Georgia insists Lithuanians to use their country's actual name in their own language as a translation of the country's in Lithuanian (we folks use Gruzija and it sounds well enough but the Georgians want us to get extreme with it by refering to them as Sakartvelas or Kartvelija as a derivative of their lovely Sakartvelo. I might believe in this gullibleness if out of sudden we start calling Vokietija (Germany) Doitšlandija or refering to Armėnija (Armenia) as Hajastanas cuz we were asked to, but for now, stop it, you.

I fully support using Czechia Lots of Czechs are bitching about it but it needs time to get used to. People didn't like the term Česko (Czech for Czechia) even in the early 00s but now it's completely normal.

In Germany we've been saying "Tschechien" (Czechia) ever since - the Term "Tschechische Republik" (Czech Republic) is used very rarely.

In case of FYROM, no one in Germany has ever said the whole name, it's simply "Mazedonien" (Macedonia) here.

But we have two names for Moldova which are used 50/50 here.

1. Moldau (which is Moldavia)
2. Moldawien (which is Moldova)

Very confusing :-)

In Eurovision German commentator uses the name "Moldawien" (Moldova) though.

One of the awkward names of a country in the german language is "Weißrussland" for Belarus. If you don't know the history behind the name it rings all kinds of associations. I believe the diplomats in german speaking countries use Belarus instead of Weißrussland. I have no objections to that, only in German it sounds somewhat like a grammar error, as if there's something missing. But I guess it is only a matter of getting used to it. So in the end I wouldn't mind to dump the word "Weißrussland" and use only Belarus instead.

I've heard my father refer to Czech Republic as Czechia, but he's the only example I can think of, most people in France say "République Tchèque", which is also my preference personally.

Also, we refer to FYROM as simply "Macédoine" because ain't nobody got time for a five-word country name in real life.

As much as I think the "Czechia" change is pointless, I'd be delighted to see FYROM have an actual name everyone actually agrees on (and not just for the sake of Eurovision of course).

Regarding Belarus, we have two names: "Biélorussie" is the used one in everyday life, while "Bélarus" is only found in official texts related to the UN and Belarusian authorities (so the latter is pretty useless).

P.S.: I forgot "Bélarus" is also used in the media for sports events (not for the rest). That doesn't make any sense.

Soon there will be agreement beetween Greece and Fyrom! So propably a new name will be used. Everyone in the rest world already call them Macedonia and they will continue but now we will have a new official name!

I know two countries are in peace, that's not an issue, but I was talking about tensions that will finally resolve, more or less.

I am sure everyone (or almost everyone) will continue to call Macedonians Macedonians. Some may call them "Slav Macedonians", but this will not harm FYRoM. The language is still "Macedonian", the only big difference will be Macedonian documents such as passports (they will have to change it to "Republika Severna Makedonija"), signs and these kind of things. And of course, everyone in Ex YU area will continue to call them "Makedonci", so all is good.

Agreement say that they are Macedonians but they are not related to Ancient Macedonians or something like that! Their language will be macedonian but it is not related to ancient macedonian language!

So Macedonia will vote on their new official name tomorrow. After constant pressure from Greece since the country's independence, the new official formal international name might end up being Northern Macedonia, and hopefully this will mark the end of EBU using the embarrassing and degrading FYROM mess in next year's Eurovision 2019.

Also, EBU seems to stick to Czech Republic rather than Czechia for now, would be nice to see if they have any intention of going with the latter here. I for one think the "Republic" makes it sound too heavy and formal, clearly emphasizing a state rather than a nation.

I like the name Czech Republic so much better than Czechia. To me Czechia sounds like it was just a geografical area and I'm used to Czech Rep. name.

Nothern Macedonia is better on the other hand. I do think FYROM sounds kinda degrading.

"Czechia" as a name is a damp squib so far, maybe that's why no change has been made in Eurovision yet. It takes more than a bunch of politicians and a registration before the UN to impose such a change anyway: there are the official names, and then there is the people's use.

I like the names "Macedonia" and "Czech Republic" best, but I think countries should be referred to at Eurovision by whatever the country's official short name is. If that's "Northern Macedonia" and "Czechia", I'm cool with that!
