It's crazy, isn't it? But I guess as long as the ratings are up (and they are as michael said) I'm afraid the Netherlands keeps making terrible choices when it comes to NFs.

First of all I would like to introduce myself, just became a member after reading the discussions on this forum for years... I'm Sjoukje and I'm from the Netherlands, I have been a huge ESC fan for all my life so this is the place to be for me!

Now about our entry, at first I didn't like the song at all, was affraid that it would be tó Dutch to even stand a chance. However, after listening to the final product I have to admit, once you've heard this song it is impossible to get it out of your head. I bet that ESC viewers from all over the world will find themselves singing Shalalie, Shalala long after Sieneke performed on stage... And isn't that an important key to succes at the ESC?

Therefore, I rate this song with 10 points. But I really, really hope that Sieneke would get herself a whole different stylist to dress her up her age... My God, one could never guess she's 17, I would have thought she's 30 years old!
But hey, that's my humble opinion.... ;)

Welcome to the forum sjoukje!!!

As much as I want the Netherlands to suceed I highly doubt that Europe will get this song. It is way too old fashioned to leave a major impression. While I do appreciate and support 'traditional' music Ik ben verliefd, shalalie is too outdated. I agree that the "shalalie, shalala" portion of the song is somewhat catchy but I really don't think it'll be enough this time.

And I still can't believe the singer is only 17.wow....35 maybe but 17?

It does have a feeling of fun to it, which if worked on could work really well, plus it has the best draw for now (second half of the semi - not that that helped us last year but you know!). Plus everyone always loves folk/ethnic entries and this is as close as we'll ever get to Dutch ethno! I'd still be very surprised if it got more than around 20 points but stranger things have happened...

I would agree with your analysis if it wasn't for the juries. I could see several viewers vote for it due to the catchyness of the chorus. However since we have juries making up half of the vote I personally think qualification seems very, very, very unlikely. Of course you never know as the juries can be unpredictable but I am pretty positive that this is not the kind of song receiving a lot of support from 'experts' (please keep in mind I used 's when using the word experts)

thanks Matt, I feel more then welcome...
I totally agree it is outdated, however I am one of those optimists that believes it could work. I bet you our chances with this song are way higher then last year an what else can we do? we had an up-tempo song and failed big time when everyone expected us to succeed. In some way our country is linked to dance-music because of the international successes we had with Tiesto, among others.

I believe that the repeating part 'shalalie, shalala' is what makes this song work. I think that thats where our song can grow.. Sieneke has to put the focus on that part and if she does, I really do think that there's a chance for us to make it to the top 3!

Vader Abraham has told songfestival.nl that he wants the stage to be "black and white with two screens that show the lyrics in Arabic and English."  just when you think it can't get any more surreal...

Everyone here thinks she is at least 35 lol. Maybe Loekz can lend her one of their outfits to make her look more youthful.

Im also shocked none of the judges voted for Peggy, I prefer her version to Sienke's.

I read a lot of reactions on different forums and a lot of people woke up with the shalali virus  I think we'll surprise by going to the final. I know, its insane lol and too early but i have this feeling :) It will stand out (positive or negative hehe) and its very very catchy! Im tired of all the ethno pop, this is Dutch folk and i really hope it will get some points cause at least we try to come up with something very close to our own culture  It might be oldfashioned but hey its eurovision! If people want to hear modern uptempo songs only: well watch the MTV awards instead!

I like some folk songs in ESC, like Portugal but this is just bad, she looks 20 years older than her age, the arrangement on stage looks bad.

Folk can be modern, but this is old fashioned and the version of it in my head is Loeks not this girl's version.

When I hear this song I can't believe we are in 2010 :D The singer doesn't help the song at all...still very old-fashioned and forgetable...I give it 1 point

Oh dear, I really did wish all the best to Netherlands before I heard both the demo and the final version, now I feel like they just sent their ticket in for the last place in their semi.

This song would have done good in eurovision in both versions up to the late 80's, but I do feel it won't do good today.

Yes, I do agree with some who said that even The Toppers were better last year.

0 points from me.

I agree with other members. This is really old fashioned. Maybe they should have given the duty of writing the song to someone younger :)

 I have to agree here. I think it was karma because The Netherlands deserved to be prequalified because of Esther the previous year. ;) It wouldn't have been a bad thing to give it to somebody younger. Still, I don't see how this could be worse than De Toppers... I mean their songs didn't even have a proper melody. And the extras on stage...

The saddest part is that this "Carnival from Hell" version really was the best despite her HORRIBLE performance. Netherlands: Stop, Stop, STOP!!!
