I was waiting for the 9 finalists to be revealed to make my first ranking, so here it is:
1. Edgars Kreilis - Tridymite - 7.5/10 - The most interesting entry in Supernova 2020, maybe the only song I immediatly clicked with. The melody is nice but I feel he has voice to do better than at the atlease clip. I wished the chorus was way more powerful, or at least I wish he could sing it louder without destroying the song, but apart from that I really think this would be the best choice for Latvia. Interesting effort imo.
2. Katrīna Bindere - I Will Break Your Heart - 7/10 - Interesting in every way, stills needing something to impress me more. Really like her soft and amazing voice. Maybe my favourite voice of Supernova 2020 along with Miks. The song is classy and mysterious, but also a bit boring and cliche. This will certainly grow on me I think and I would love to see her representing Latvia in Rotterdam. My main issue is that it's too repetitive. I want her back in future editions.
3. Miks Dukurs - I'm Falling For You - 6/10 - Well, this started very promising, the verses are very pleasant to listen. The chorus is sadly weaker than the rest of the song. I feel this is a common problem in some of this edition's songs. Lyrically it is not very inspired and melodically too. His voice is something though, certainly it's what connects me the most with the song. I put this effort between the average and good level.
4. Samanta Tīna - Still Breathing - 6/10 - Here comes the fan favourite. Not really hyped about it tbh. She has a nice voice and this is nothing new. The song is different and original from what we use to listen at Eurovision but I don't see this necessarily in a good way. I don't understand what she is saying too, she needs to work in this. But no doubts she kills it and the backing singers are imo my favourite thing of the whole performance. I see the potential but I see this flopping too in May.
5. Katrīna Dimanta - Heart Beats - 6/10 - The girl from Aarzemnieki is back eheh. One of the most underrated entries of the last decade. This effort stands out in every way, the song is catchy and gets immediatly stuck in your ears, her voice makes it even more special. Well, if we analyse the song deeper, despite the strong presence of strings, I don't think the song is that strong and it's very very short. There are as many pros as cons, so...
6. DRIKSNA - Stay - 6/10 - The verses are very enjoyable imo, but the chorus is too generic + falls flat and is very underwhelming compared to the rest of the song that would deserve at least a 7 from me if the chorus was at the same level of the verses. There is something missing definitely. In a vocal point of view, he doesn't sound very good although I think his voice tone was actually good, maybe it was just my first-listen impression.
7. Bad Habits - Sail For You - 5.5/10 - The beginning was too interesting for what was coming next, I thought something I would definitely enjoy was coming. Well, that didn't happen. His super voice fits some parts of the song, other parts just don't work for me. I don't know what else can I say about this one, I just find some parts are nice, others I feel confused while listening. That transition entering the last third of the song left me kinda what?
8. ANNNA - Polyester - 4/10 - This is not just for me, sorry. This will have many fans I already knew that until minute number 1, but this kind of songs just don't work for me. The verses are ok for me but I can't appreciate the chorus. It's just a bit annoying for my ears. Maybe this will grow on me (as some of Billie Eilish songs did), but for now it's a (big) no. Would be unhappy if Latvia selected ANNNA to Eurovision but I don't think it will happen though.
9. Seleste - Like Me - 3.5/10 - Well, I don't hate this but I don't like anything tbh too. The song is decent but my low mark is due to her lack of ability to sing low notes. I mean, I see she is talented, she has an interesting tone, but she just can't sing low notes, and since this song is full of low notes, it's just impossible to listen to the song and to appreciate it. Hope Seleste improves and comes back stronger in a future moment, maybe she just needs to gain more confidence.
