I just watched something I never thought i'd see be made in my lifetime. A biopic on the final three years of Nico's life. As a humongous fan of the Velvet Underground's siren vocalist and icon of the 60s, a woman who was quite literally the inventor of goth music, there's obviously some bias at play here from me. At the same time though, I was worried about how overly critical i'd be of all the small details and portrayal of a person I must have spent over the years hundreds of hours watching any footage of that I could get a hold of. However, Danish actress Trine Dyrholm is mesmerizing in the role of Nico, and even convincingly performs the songs herself (best Nico channeling i've ever experienced, besides my bathroom renditions of
Janitor of Lunacy of course). Her vocals on
These Days brought tears to my eyes, and the way she performed
My Heart Is Empty was astounding.
I can't honestly say what someone with no interest in Nico or The Velvet Underground would make of the film, but for me it was a treat and it touched me hard. It's harrowing to watch at times as Nico is injecting heroin into her leg at any sneaky moment she could find, but the dark moments are broken up by amusing ones. Nico as a person was unintentionally very funny in her deadpan ways. I found it particularly amusing seeing her attachment to a rather large portable audio recorder that she'd carry around, along with a sizeable microphone that she'd hold up in the air, whilst wearing a big pair of headphones. She was always capturing sounds, and sometimes at the most inconvenient of times.
The movie is essentially a road trip on a rock and roll tour through Europe. Nico's band is comprised of "amateur junkies", and they all along with a rather forgiving and blind eye turning manager find themselves in some hairy situations along the way. Ultimately the film is heartwarming by the end, as it's reaches a very poignant conclusion. Throughout the biopic you see flashbacks to Nico's younger years and childhood spent in a Nazi occupied Berlin, and I think it helps you to put pieces of her puzzle together. She never seemed to quite get over that trauma, and her years when she was a model only admired for her beauty was a further dent that shaped her into the very dark being that she had become, ravaged by heroin and at times extremely aloof.
Nico's discography is very precious to me, so to see a film like this was an event. Something very special. It doesn't gloss over the ugly, but it also showed she was still at heart human. Just a very different one. The director, Susanna Nicchiarelli has created something I won't forget.
