Irene Grandi - Finalmente io
Great voice of course but the composition isn't really doing it for me. It stays very much on one level throughout. Those strings going for a stab at the end are kind of cool I suppose and perhaps it's something that could grow on me overtime.
Marco Masini - Il confronto
We stan a crazy
throat invaded by chainsaw chorus. It's the Italian special, here presented to us beautifully by this silver fox. You so know it's coming yet it still shakes you to the core even if your body is prepared. Mr Masini delivers a touching performance. Sophisticated composition. Lovely.
Rita Pavone - Niente (Resilienza 74)
Super fab. Wasn't sure at first just how much I was going to be into the song but the chorus is the seller and Rita delivers it and then some. I know I'm gonna keep coming back to this again and again. Nice message to her international fans as well during the bridge: "I love you". We love you too Rita
Achille Lauro - Me ne frego
This was all very much an experience. An awakening actually as I now know I need to fulfil my dream of owning a glittery lycra singlet ASAP. The whole performance was scandalous and I just loved it. And the song? Wow. Ooo la la. So infectious. So wonderful. The bridge section is just absolutely divine as well. For two years now there has been something so beautiful about seeing Achille Lauro on the prestigious Sanremo stage. It's just such a thrill to experience this man doing his thing. He fills me with joy
Diodato canta - Fai rumore
Aw bless. That's a real kick to the balls chorus and I tell you what, I'm totally there by the time we reach the incredibly dream poppy bridge. It has just enough twists and turns to get away with what it's doing here. I think it's rather lovely and so, so humongous. Diodato carries it incredibly well.
Le Vibrazioni - Dov'è
Duvet duvet duvet duvet duvet duvet. These guys previous attempt at Sanremo was my favourite song of that edition. They've gone down the more traditional Italian ballad route this time and what they're doing is still rather lovely. That pre-chorus buildup is just the most Italian sounding thing I've ever heard. It's like running up to the top of a green, white and red helter skelter and then gracefully sliding down it for the bowl of spaghetti bolognese that's waiting for you at the bottom.
Anastasio - Rosso di rabbia
This one's really rocking it hard. The chorus is great. Super infectious. It's going to take me a few more times to get into his flow though (I was impressed but it was also kind of jarring with the music). I feel after a few listens this could end up a big favourite of mine. Need to hear the studio version too.
Elodie canta - Andromeda
Ohh boooy. I'm feeling this could be the one. It's so good. Such a fricking sizzling hot performance, full of class. Just oozing in style. Everything had me fixated. Elodie absolutely owns it and looks about a gazillion dollars. This could be humongous at Eurovision. Ow.
Bugo e Morgan - Sincero
The synths are delicious but sadly the melody isn't so much the full course meal. I have to be honest about it. This was the song I was most looking forward to as Semplicemente is one of my all time favourite Sanremo songs, but I find Sincero quite mid. The quality is there and also some undeniable charm (bless Morgan's soul), but it's missing the magic. I really, really hope it grows on me cause I love this man.
Alberto Urso - Il sole ad est
This guy has wondrous sharpie pen designed eyebrows much like my own. They were distracting me greatly during the song, but from what I picked up, it was all a bit too safe and predictable. I wasn't offended but I also wasn't particularly inspired. I feel like he could have just won X Factor and this is his
winner's song. Most unremarkable of the night by perhaps some distance.
Riki - Lo sappiamo entrambi
Hmmmm pleasant. I don't dislike it and I kind of think I'm digging the robotic voice filter used during the chorus. Adds something a bit different to the very classic sounding Italian ballad that melodically here is being presented to us in its most basic and unadventurous form. I'm not crazy for Lo sappiamo entrambi but it's highly tolerable.
Raphael Gualazzi - Carioca
Something very uncanny about this song and performance. I'm extremely terrified and yet fascinated. It was almost Cats the movie-esque. Such an alarming visual display and yet here I am going back straight away for seconds and accidental thirds. I'm aware that this is Satan's party but I'ma sit down over here and look over at you all throwing exotic shapes whilst grinning with twisted smiles, perhaps eventually joining in wearing my new glittery lycra singlet.
Amaaazing first night of Sanremo. Some of these songs and performances had me shook. Me ne frego is my favourite. I can't help but love Achille Lauro. He'd be fighting for my number 1 spot at Eurovision and probably yank it cause I just love rebels. So much sex appeal, and speaking of sex appeal, Andromeda would fare with me similarly to Soldi. I think it could stun at the contest. I had a feeling before this thing even begun that Elodie would be the one to watch this year. I think Carioca might just be my second favourite tonight. It's so surreal to see Raphael back with a song like this. It's stupidly infectious though. I think I want in on it badly. Invite me to that party. Everything was mostly great bar a couple of very mid man ballads, Irene (again, mid) and the Morgan disappointment (gonna go back to his song and try again). I love you Italy.
