Interesting to see the reaction to the revamp - it feels like its genre has changed so much that all of its previous fans are annoyed, but everyone else likes it much more. It's completely reversed its following. Personally I think I preferred the darker, more dramatic original version, but it's close, and this is certainly better produced. Still, it's slowly growing on me, and might eventually catch up to my opinion of the old version.
Revamps in recent years seem to follow a pattern. We'll get a few each year, and they'll be split into:
- Slight production value improvements that work but aren't highly discussed (Cyprus/Switzerland 2015, Georgia 2016)
- Making minor backing/melody changes to mixed, but generally positive, feedback (Georgia 2015, Spain/France 2016)
- Changing the entire feel of the song, thrilling some people and devastating others (Malta/Belarus 2015, Israel 2016)
- Turning an interesting but niche song into bland pop and destroying what fanbase it had (Macedonia 2015, Albania 2016)
It feels like there always has to be one or two of each category, never more or less than that. I'll be interested to see if this holds up next year...
