To be fair, most of NDR's and Germany's staging are horrible. Cascada's dress and these stupid steps weren't brilliant either... or Elaiza's performance...
It just makes me wonder that Germany seems to not want to be represented by contemporary, modern and progressive pop songs. We usually end up choosing radio-friendly and bland tunes.
Gregorian, Avantasia, Unheilig, Faun would have been great options as well... their entries weren't exceptionally brilliant but they were completely different and would have stood out in Eurovision.
It's been ages since I read this thread so I was catching up today and well, I just had to reply you. Those options were really some of my faves those years, like, they're all REALLY good songs, with something different that made them stood up for themselves. And they all lost to bland, harmless and "safe" pop songs (always "in my honest opinion", of course). As a big fan of German language music (especially from Germany), it really
saddens me that this country doesn't dare to send something different. How is it possible that year after year Germany's the only Big 5 country that doesn't seem to think their music or their language is worth it, or that people wouldn't like it because they don't understand it. Even that people don't like how German sounds.
I'm very happy that you guys like the song, and I'm happy you did SO well last year with Michael, but that doesn't change the fact that I'd love for Germany to embrace what they/you could offer and just take a risk for once.
Ok, rant over
