Re: GEORGIA 2016 - Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitas

So, after the shock of hearing the name of this band, here's my impressions:

Not bad. I actually like this kind of music and it brings something different to the table besides the classic Europop and ethnic ballads. Yeah, I like them both as much as any other Eurovision fan, but isn't the end of the world having other genres, and after listening some of their songs... they're actually really good! A serious band. They remind me of Muse or maybe The Neighborhood.

I see two main issues though: first of all, can a genre like this really make it in Eurovision? In the last couple of years, the only group that kind of worked was Softengine, from Finland. Outside of them, almost everybody in any alternative genre else failed (Izabo, The Lovebugs, Malcolm Lincoln, Who See).

Second, if they're not writing their own song, they may be missing the point: I guess they want to appeal to a wider audience, but the problem here is that the may actually lose the very little public they could attract while failing to look a little more mainstream.

Then again, we'll have to wait and see. Isn't a good choice? I'd say it is but it is certainly more of a "ballsy" one. Let's hope the bet pays off.

Or the other way round: "It's not mainstream, so it must be a mastetpiece"

There is a vast spectrum of opinions and thoughts between 'joke' and 'masterpiece' so I'm not sure what you're trying to say...

I just liked your post, cause I actually read this kind of statement often in ESC - forums.
But I also read a similar kind of short-reasoning when it comes to against the mainstream acts, and I wanted to add this observation to yours. :)

The anything outside of mainstream is brilliant opinions probably do exist, but they seem to be far less frequent than comments by people who bash anything outside of pop. Saying that, picking anything outside of the generic ESC style is already a positive sign as it brings variety to the contest and actually makes the whole contest to represent the current music scene better. (a lame electonic song for example would therefor be better for the contest than a lame peace ballad).

On side note, there has been around 16 rock/metal/punk songs in ESC during the last 5 years. 9 of them qualified to the final, 1 was prequalified and 6 failed. That is 60% qualification rate that is pretty much the same as for songs outside of that group (around 65%)

I love to see alternative music on Eurovision, as a fan i hate to watch 20+ generic, similar songs in my favourite Saturday evening. The name of the band screams joke entry, but i love joke entries so bring it on.

There was no note of this - but tomorrow we will hear their 5 Eurovision candidate songs. The choice will be announced on Feb 15th.

I'm glad the public takes part on deciding the song, even though I'm sure the decision will be a boring mainstream song that gives the impression of some alternative deep song. I think it's an interesting choice, the fact that they go with something that has a lot of chances to flop makes me appreciate Georgia even more. From what I've heared from them, I'm not sure if they can pull something that can compete with powerful acts based on show..

Isn't the show supposed to start in 10 min? I'm getting errors from the stream.

I love how they say the show starts at 21:00, but then we still have to wait about 20 minutes.

Sometimes, the reporters mentions "eurovizis" and "young georgian lolitas".
I don't speak georgian...
