Re: GEORGIA 2016 - Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitas
So, after the shock of hearing the name of this band, here's my impressions:
Not bad. I actually like this kind of music and it brings something different to the table besides the classic Europop and ethnic ballads. Yeah, I like them both as much as any other Eurovision fan, but isn't the end of the world having other genres, and after listening some of their songs... they're actually really good! A serious band. They remind me of Muse or maybe The Neighborhood.
I see two main issues though: first of all, can a genre like this really make it in Eurovision? In the last couple of years, the only group that kind of worked was Softengine, from Finland. Outside of them, almost everybody in any alternative genre else failed (Izabo, The Lovebugs, Malcolm Lincoln, Who See).
Second, if they're not writing their own song, they may be missing the point: I guess they want to appeal to a wider audience, but the problem here is that the may actually lose the very little public they could attract while failing to look a little more mainstream.
Then again, we'll have to wait and see. Isn't a good choice? I'd say it is but it is certainly more of a "ballsy" one. Let's hope the bet pays off.
