I am not surprised by Serbia's victory. The Serbian national team has excellent players and, compared to Portugal, they had nothing to lose.

I am not even surprised by the quality of Serbian football. Eastern Europe, for me, has always given birth to the best players in the history of football (perhaps more than Argentina and Brazil). The only problem is that Serbia, like all Eastern European nationals, will lose its lucidity. The worst enemy of Eastern European football is only one: being too emotional. Yugoslavia deserved to win at least 2 world championships, Puskas' Hungary and Czechoslovakia idem but ... nothing. Wonderful national teams such as Stoičkov's Bulgaria, Lato-Boniek and Lewandoski's Poland, Dzeko's Bosnia and Herzegovina, Suker and Modric's Croatia, the Czech Republic and the USSR would have deserved much, much more but ... nothing .

Having said that, I wish Serbia to play an excellent World Cup.

On the other hand, the challenge between Spain and Sweden is different. The Scandinavians lost the direct qualification by losing badly in Georgia. Sweden missed a great chance against a Spain no longer at the levels of 2008-2012.

Tonight is going to be a great football night. A challenge to the last goal. Italy will face tough Northern Ireland in Belfast ... and Switzerland will face Bulgaria at home. We Italians always manage to complicate our lives by ourselves ... the group, if Jorginho, did not miss the two penalties against Switzerland was won. Perhaps this is also what makes Italy's victories such epic challenges. The Italian suffering makes the public feel emotionally involved. It gives the feeling that, thanks to the willpower, the spit blood and the heart, beyond the talent of the opponents, it is always possible to triumph. I say this: if Italy returns to the World Cup, the final of 2022 will be Argentina - Italy. These difficulties, the same that Italy suffered in the 1982 World Cup round and with Alaba's Austria in 2020, are the same that are often found along the path of the champions (a non-Italian example? 'Uruguay towards the 1950 World Cup). Maybe these are the words of a simple fan? I was not wrong when I thought we would win the Europeans and I think I am not wrong now. Then ... if another national team wins, I will honor the winner and be happy for their people. Winning a World Cup is an extraordinary emotion that everyone should feel.

Congrats :ch: ... didnt expect this outcome! Great mentality. I feared that Italy would struggle against a well-defending and sacrificially fighting team like Northern Ireland. Actually Italy could even have lost this one.

With :pt: and :it: we already got two heavy weights in the play-off round... the play-offs are a bit harder to overcome this time, as there are three pathes with each four teams and only the path winner qualifies. So it's actually like the play-off rounds for Euros 2020. In order to win the path you gotta beat two different teams. Now imagine, :pt: and :it: will get drawn into the same path and cancel each other out

Let's see how this turns out.

I imagined that Italy would go to the playoffs. We had to pay the two penalties which Jorginho made a mistake. Even if we are stronger than Switzerland (on paper), the field has declared the team that deserved to go directly to the world championship.

In Italy there was a lot of pressure and the ghosts of 2018 still weighed on the players' memory and legs. We are lost, we have momentarily lost our self-confidence.

I want to make two considerations on the Belfast challenge:

1) I realized that Northern Ireland, compared to Bulgaria, would fight to the end when I saw the singer who sang the national anthems ... never seen this thing ... There was a lot of desire on the part of the Northern Ireland to win a prestigious result against the European champions.

2) We send the Northern Irish audience to ESC 2022. Rarely, perhaps almost never, have I seen an audience in tune and in time with the music! Great Britain x12points:lol:

Hopefully :se::pt::it: gets seperated from each other.
I hate it when Topteams dont qualify because of the hard Competition.

I was also thinking about it this morning but then I said to myself that it is useless to make calculations. Any opponent must be faced with respect and conviction.

I would be more afraid of facing North Macedonia rather than Portugal. Beyond the quality of the top teams, the small national teams play with fury and without too much pressure. Furthermore, we Italians historically face challenges better when we face the best teams. We were able to get New Zealand, Paraguay and Slovakia eliminated from the group in 2010 and win against Belgium, Spain and England in 2020.

I respect the Swedish national team but they managed to defeat us in 2018 because of Ventura and because we were experiencing a period of "generational darkness" (we had people like Sturaro, Zaza, Pellé, Eder, Montolivo… 😢). If Italy, unlike last night in Belfast, finds its purposeful game and recovers the many injured, it is the Swedes who must be afraid of the European champions.

I will say the same words that I wrote yesterday and that Mancini said, if we manage to survive and go to the 2022 World Cup the Italian national team will revitalize itself, take off its demons and can win it. This is Italy ... always on the brink and then capable of big surprises. The heart of us fans, however, often does not stand up to this lunacy of our national team, we appreciate the consistency in the results of the German national team (the group stage is always an easy game for you).

Today's European matches G-group matches are most interesting: The Netherlands, Norway and Turkey has each change to qualify straight. The Netherlands and Norway play against each other and Turkey against Montenegro. If Turkey wins Montenegro and the Netherlands and Norway play draw, Turkey qualifies. But if either the Netherlands or Norway wins, Turkey goes the Road to WC qualifiers (if it gets at least one point against Montenegro).

Also in D group both Ukraine and Finland has a change to get Road to WC qualifiers: Ukraine must win Bosnia and Hertsegovina and Finland must not get any points against France. Finland has at least get one point against France or rather win.

Group E Wales and Czech Republic fight for Road to WC qualifiers: Today Czech Republic has to score more goals than Wales, if Czech Republic wants to get second place.

If I'm not mistaken, the Czech Republic and Austria qualify for the draws thanks to the Nations League.

:dz: qualified for the last round !

:ng: too after a thrilling game against Cap Verde !
I was sure that Algeria and Nigeria would move on to the third phase. They are teams with a great football tradition (Nigeria also boasts an extraordinary youth sector). Mali, Senegal, Egypt, Morocco and Ghana (which struggled a lot to overcome South Africa) snatched the pass for the third stage. Ivory Coast / Cameroon and Tunisia / Equatorial Guinea will be very exciting! Top eliminations in sight! I am curious to know how the issue of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Benin will turn out. The Democratic Republic of Congo risks elimination due to a mistake by coach Cuper.

Cameroon is getting Ivorian Coast out for the moment !

Also what a group phase from us, 6 games, 6 victories, 20 goals scored, 1 goal conceeded

I think that we'll face Cameroon or Ivory Coast in last round, will anyway be a thrilling game !

I hope that Morocco can face the DR of the Congo / Benin. At least, Mali. The other challenges, even if Morocco have great players, are very tough and with an uncertain outcome (I take it for granted that Tunisia will pass against Equatorial Guinea).
