I remembered seeing that the show is tomorrow that how sad it is that we didn't get to have our typical rehearsal weeks....well fear not people, I decided to cure some of my quarentine boredom with writing some "rehearsal" notes. Some are made up, some are taken from other performances and some are taken from the video. But most it is a mixture of all three. Hope you enjoy and don't take it too seriously!
Sweden were the first to rehearse and the Mamas is going all in with their fun performance. All dressed in black, these women doesn't want to leave us with a dull start of the show. The backdrop reminds a lot of the one in Melodifestivalen, black with yellow lights, all focus is set on Loulou, Ashley and Dina, who are singing their hearts out and is ready to try bringing Sweden to yet an another final.
An another catchy upbeat song continues and that is Ireland, where Lesley Roy is rocking it out in her pink suit and black boots. The performance is colourful and Lesleys stage presence is strong in every camerashot. The lgbt-message worked in 2018, but will it work in 2020 as well?
North Macedonia, who did their best placement ever in 2019, hope to get one better this year with Vasil and his ”YOU”. A mysterious performance with only him and a dancer. The performance is filled with passion, just like a tangoinspired dance song want to be.
Montaigne is next on stage, and she give us a very energetic and artsy performance in her Mr. Mime-inspired costume. She sings with a lot of passion and with a tender to her voice, really lives into the song with all her soul. The staging goes in blue and black and fits well with the sad undertones of the melody.
Back to the 70s with Russia. This is a performance that probably will be divide a lot of people. The singers and the background dancer is in blue, who deathdrops like there is no tomorrow. The signature moves ”the rubiks cube”-move and the leg shake is there of course, giving the audience at home an Eurovision-moment they will never forget.
Ana stands there in a beautiful white dress and brings one of the strongest vocal performances of the night. She push the chorus to completly new heights and the garden feel in the backdrop fits very well with the improved watersounds. Slovenia has qualified twice to the final in a row, will Ana follow suit, despite the odds not being in her favour at the moment?
VAL is up next and give us our 2nd deathdrop of the night by their dancer! RuPaul Charles would be proud to say the least! The three of them are dressed in black and the singer Valerie Gribusova is rocking her ”silverwig”. It is an energetic performance and the duo together with the dancer is giving them all.
Time for The Roop, which go all in with the wacky performance from their national final. The staging goes in black and red and the singer Vaidotas Valiukevicius, in white and black, is charming the cameras in every angle possible. The dancemoves are really something to remember and many will catch on after the first time.
A very classic performance comes from Hooverphonic with this Bond-theme inspired song. The staging goes in black and white, and the group stands there with two violinsts and a celloist on the side. The singer Luka is really catching the cameras and stares almost into our souls when she sings this delicate ballad.
Time for Malta which give us a wild performance, with dancers and backing singers around. But in the centre stands Destiny, who looks like a goddess as she sings this soulful popsong with a maturity rarely seen from 17-year olds. Her interaction with the dancers and the cameras is very professional, you could understand that she has some experience from JESC and Britain's Got Talent to name a few. And in the end of the song she brings us to church. And maybe herself to the final?
Time for Ukraine, who with this mysterious song takes us on a journey. Go_A has a unique sound, especially Kateryna Pavlenko with her ”White voice”. This will for sure be a divider for those at home, but nothing can put aside the charming shouldermoves from the instrumental parts. The staging goes in black and red, as well as Katerynas dress. The song hits it's cresendo when the electric guitar burst into fireworks and the singers gives them all.
A calm and dark start from Roxen, who stands and sings her ballad with a lot of passion. You could hear that it is sung from her heart, almost that she has lived through it in some way. The staging goes in black and blue and fits the song. The keychange changes it up and a vibrating strobelight effect makes it feels like thunder hit the stage. But Roxen stands there, strong and gives a strong impression.
Time for some happiness from Israel, who give us a fun and energetic performance. The star quality from young Eden Alene is massive and she brings the rather simple song to feel massive. Dressed in white and with dancer and backing singers in yellow, this is the performance we need in these times. The background is having the same african feel to it with the lyrics in Amharic, Hebrew and Arabic.
One of the most stable rehearsals tonight comes from Ulrikke from Norway. Vocally teriffic and she looks stunning in her golden dress. The back drop goes in black and gold, with a violinist and a celloist on stage. A very simple but striking performance where all focus is on the song and on Ulrikke. The way it should be.
Time for Sandro for Cyprus. The performance is mysterious and dark, with dancers and backing singers with him, all dressed in black. The performance starts in black and white but goes red during the choruses. It is very energetic and Sandro does his all in every move and every note.
Croatia brings us the balkanballad of the year and Damirs voice isn't something to complain about. To the contrary, he is one hell of a singer! Dressed in black he belts out his Wild Winds. The backdrop goes in red and blue, with fireworks exploding behind him during the chorus. Visually very fitting, since Damir really brings out his all in every high note.
And we end it all with Azerbaijan, who with ”Cleopatra” gives us a real show! Efendi starts off on a daybed and is almost fed with good-looking men. When she stands up for the chorus female dancers dressed in gold like herself dance with her. Efendi has the right attitude for this song, cocky, but with a glimt in her eyes showing that she isn't too serious. This is to give us a show and she does it all. She isn't only singing that she is like Cleopatra. She is Cleopatra!
