ORF general Wrabetz wrote a letter to the ORF supervisory board stating that by the choice of Vienna, he wants to bring in as many countries as possible (Czech Republic, Slovakia, also Israel and Turkey)

How could Vienna do that better than Innsbruck or Graz? :?

Well, Vienna is within driving distance for the Centrope countries. Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary almost in the greater Vienna metropolitan area, ex-Yugoslavian countries are within a decent driving distance and within 1 hour flight time, Turkey and Israel have lots of historical connections with Vienna.

But I'm not sure if his point is legit or just an excuse,

I don't think the host city will influence the decision of the broadcasters to participate. The host country might, but not the city within the country. Anyway I do hope we'll have at least some of those back.

Well, Vienna means for Slovakia (Bratislava region) e.g., that they don't even have to book hotels nor flights to go there.

Some people will probably stop in Bratislava then travel to Vienna because hotels will be cheaper.

Well, Bratislava is expensive, but I guess they still can capitalize on the ESC

Surely Bratislava is not more expensive than Vienna

Never been to Slovakia, but when I was looking for hotels in Bratislava it was ridiculously cheap, wheres Vienna is hardly cheap.

Love Vienna though and the choice of host city was logical, a bit disappointing to see neither Slovakia or Czech Republic re-joining for 2015 now that Austria will host, I was hoping to see Central-European comebacks but apparently it meant jack...

Vienna hotels are not that expensive. Even now, that prices for 4 and 5 stars are rising up by 300 percent because of Eurovision in May, they are only at the average price level for these categories.

Make no mistake, Bratislava is no shopping paradise. Many Slovaks working in Bratislava buy their houses on the Austrian side of the border, because it's so much cheaper. Same is true for Prague. Bratislava and Prague GDP are insanely high, but the regional disparities are also huge. Prague and Bratislava definitely are Top 5 regions of Europe.

I'm still hoping at least Slovakia will be persuaded to comeback. There is still time.

That really has surprised me, Bratislava and Prague have such high GDP's while the rest of the country is rather low.

That's also true for Warsaw, Budapest and Bucharest! CEE capitals are just very important for investors.

The Bratislava and Prague GDP's are higher than any regional GDP in Germany, Austria, Netherlands etc.

Only Inner London and Luxembourg are higher!

btw. UK is similar to Central Europe according to regional GDP's.... Except for London, it is rather below average

By purchase price power, Bratislava is not that rich and the gap between GDP and PPP goes to show how expensive it really is especially for locals.

The capitals are obviously far more developed compared to the rest of the country. I'm sure if Sofia was on region on it's own it would be green as well. Make no mistakes about London and the south in General, it is incredibly expensive down there, compared to further North. For GDP Cornwall and west coast of Wales are only that low because the cities and towns are not as developed as the rest of the country, as well as it being very rural. I just love with Germany how you can see just about where East Germany use to be with GDP, but will PPP it really isn't that different to the rest of the country.

Well, I'm not sure if that's true for Sofia. I've been there, and it really looked much poorer and less safer than other CEE capitals. But, it is extremely cheap...... And Bulgaria is very nice, and food tasty :)

Istanbul is far more advanced than Sofia as well

Well, hotels for sure are NOT expensive there. Out of the places I've looked into (aswell compared to the ones I've actually been to), it's one of the cheapest capitals/major cities in Europe as far as hotels go (I can't tell for the rest since I only checked hotels, maybe restaurants and shopping is more expensive I dunno, but that was quite expensive in Vienna too so I doubt it would be more expensive in Bratislava).

Vienna is less expensive than Switzerland, London or Scandinavia.

Every statistic shows that PPP in Austria and Vienna is higher than GDP, and in London and Scandinavia it's lower. In Netherlands PPP is even much lower,

And quality of hotels and food is perfect in Austria. When you go to Switzerland, nothing's perfect, just expensive.

But of course, ESC weeks are going to get pricy. Although there is a lot of competition amongst hotels, they are assuming that they will be completely booked during those two weeks, so they can rise up their prices like a phoenix!

One might think, that Bratislava attracts rich shopping tourists across the Austrian border. Well, it definitely isn't so. Slovaks themselves come shopping in Austria. You won't see too many Austrian license plates in Bratislava like you would elsewhere.

But hotels in Bratislava might be cheaper, because it is no real tourist destination. Who lands in Bratislava, wants to go to Vienna. Look at Prague, hotels are horrificly expensive.

Actually, why would anyone want to "land in Bratislava" when it's far more expensive to travel there by plane than to Vienna? While accommodation seems to be rather cheap in Bratislava, traveling there (atleast by plane) is surprisingly expensive.

Food perfect in Austria? I've been to Austria about 6 times or so and my reaction on the food is that it's just so-so, however their cakes and cookies are awesome

Really, has Bratislava airport become more expensive now? Well, the difference between Bratislava and Vienna Airport are basically the destinations. So, it also depends where you are, if it is more affordable flying to Vienna or to Bratislava. Bratislava is basically an airport for low cost carriers like Ryanair.

I would never fly from Vienna to Scotland, and always choose Ryanair from Bratislava to Edinburgh. It makes a big difference if you pay 60 euro or 1.200 euro including changing planes :D
