I wouldn't categorize it as shameful. Pundits and commentators around here had nothing but nice things to say about
. Last night was the exception even though the team did not play that badly. Albania was just very moralized from their e
bition vs. France. I don't think (and also hope not) that they'll get one of the 4 best placed 3rd teams slots. Romania had to face that game as a final and not doing that was the problem. Otherwise you would still be in. It is true that Albania has more of a team...as in, no matter how dirty and unlikeable their players are, they do know to play as a unit. This sort of union I did not see in Romania unfortunately. Individually there were a handful of interesting players...but you really need a team for this sort of competition.
I watch as many matches as I can but I do not have much time to follow the news pre and post-matches, so I don't know if some players were limited physically or if Iordanescu just went for different options last night. But some players would have really made more of a difference on the field last night than the ones that have played. Rat (if only for being experienced and the captain), Pintilii, Chipciu and Keseru. All of them should have played. Was good to see Hoban on the starting 11, don't understand how he was benched before - very intense player with a fighting spirit. Torje should have started as well perhaps. Popa displayed pretty weak football throughout the tournament so I would have benched him. As for Sanmartean going in...not the best choice there, perhaps for Romanians watching the moment he got in was when the nation realized that the team was quitting on the match. Probably this was Iordanescu's way of giving a prize to a player who won't be a player for much longer...but Romania needed more fire up front instead. I sighed so badly when Andone sent that ball hitting the cross bar
That was when I realized to myself that was it...sad to see my beloved underdog being the first nation going out.
Things could have been different though...had that illegal Giroud goal not having counted I'm sure the moral within the team would have been another from the get go. Had the team beaten the hosts at the opening match...I'm certain that'd put the morale of the squad sky high and the Switzerland match would have been something else. And Albania last night would have been a formality. So I think Romanians can complain of having fallen victims of bad refereeing. Also of bad luck with the woodwork (Sapunaru vs. Switzerland, Andone last night...and I could be forgetting another moments)
And sure, bias aside I think that they would have not won the tournament by far (although Greece in 2004 will be inside everyone's mind for long) but just passing this group would have already tasted like victory. Now just hope that the upcoming generation of players is more promising, like that great 90's generation and I'll be rooting to see Romania in Russia in 2 years although a WC qualification is always more complicated than an Euro one by default. But who knows...
