Re: ESC United - LIVE from Tel Aviv - Day 4 rehearsal discussion
My thoughts on today's rehearsals (based on ESCunited live stream + official Eurovision youtube clips):
- Overall: A very strong second half, definitely with all the high impact songs. You have all the very good vocalists gather in this half and the weakest you get out of the lot is probably Michela from Malta but she still sounds better than most of the vocalists you get in the first half and semi 1. Makes me wonder if the viewers will get exhausted watching so many high impact songs back to back. In addition, I am not liking the overwhelming white/black outfits in the second half. Makes the whole second half of the competition look very dull.
- Croatia: While I applaud they try to bring in the dancers in the song, but the wings just don't work. Roko look so uncomfortable wearing them. Vocally he nailed it as usual (although he did deliberately sing some parts quite differently just to save his vocals). The theme of the staging does match with the song, but everything about the entry is dated (same as Moldova).
- Malta: Michela started off very shaky with her vocals, but she definitely got into the groove of things after more runs. Visually, well done. I would have loved it if they brought in the sophisticated/modern tropical fashion look from the video. But the current youthful bright/neon image does gives the song a different vibe and perhaps is more closer to Michela's actual style. My only issue is that she is wearing white outfit, I hope for a brighter outfit.
- Lithuania: Basically a non-event. He sounds great. Staging is like an exact replica of the national finals. Nothing new to talk about. Have to wait for the camera angles. However, I can see it easily getting swallowed by Malta and Russia.
- Russia: Vocally, he is serving it except the bum note towards the end of the first run. I am not sure what to think about the staging. I do feel it was a mismatched. The performance is made to be all about him, instead of telling a proper story which could have been a better option. The performance left me cold. My first disappointment for the day.
- Albania: She is basically serving all the vocals and the performance is all about her vocals. Meet up with technical issues, so not sure what the end product will be like. Other than that, nothing much to say. Have to wait for the camera angles.
- Norway: Vocally they sound good. But I feel they have done the staging incorrectly. While I am in favour of a less messy staging, but the colour scheme and setting they went for is a mistake. They should have gone for a fairytale theme with northern lights as the backdrop. A blue/green setting would have done wonders. I feel the song has lost its power with the current dark staging even though there were pyro, but it felt cold and less fun. My second disappointment of the day.
- The Netherlands: My third disappointment of the day. Vocally, again no fault. But the staging is pretty much left desired. He should not be made sitting. I think the only thing to salvage this performance is for the camera angles to make it more intimate. The staging does look a little dark.
- North Macedonia: Another vocally-strong performance. There is nothing to fault on her vocals. I do like her dress. I am not sure why people are saying this is a good staging. It's actually very basic. If anything, Tamara's vocals compensates the lack of staging. I would have expected the screens behind her to show different girls/women singing parts of the song together with her to bring out the solidarity message. Looks like a miss opportunity there to present a more impactful performance.
- Azerbaijan: What can I say? Chingiz and his team has managed to impress. I do worry for Chingiz initially, firstly on how he is going to translate his studio vocals in a live setting and secondly there is basically no hype around the entry (despite being top 10 in most fan polls). But I am so glad, not only Chingiz nailed his vocals with the help of the backing vocalists (as seen in the unplugged version), he brought the mugham element into his song (which basically is chilling) and the elaborated staging that further elevate the song. I can't wait to watch the full televised performance. Well done Azerbaijan!
