Re: Balearica Island - Follow Me into NSC 152

Whoa, I had this on my list too! :D Good luck ^^

btw, I'm gonna see Da Tweekaz in Prague at the end of November for the first time :D can't wait

Sorry for stealing it then. :p Thanks. He has other good songs too tho, so don't let this stop you from sending a Refuzion track later. ;)

Imagination Festival? :D You have something to look forward to, I've seen them 8 times, and never been disappointed. :D There's just something about them that makes the crowds go nuts. Probably alcohol tbh. :p Would be fun to be there tbh. :)

Re: Balearica Island - Gorecki (NSC 154)

Just realized I haven't posted here in a while, so here's an update:

Refuzion and Christian Carlucci's Follow Me did better than expected (because I never really expect to qualify to the final), and beat our 3 time NSC participant Da Tweekaz in the semi final, this time performing for ::bif. 4 attempts, and Da Tweekaz still haven't qualified to a final. :( But Refuzion did, and even got a top half finish in the final, which was a great result. :D

Then it was time for Christmas (or Holidays/Yule, as I prefer to call it) in Il-Bidu, and because of that, I decided to send a song that's been awaiting a Christmas spinoff for a couple of years. Freddy Kalas - Hey Ho, a song about how the Holidays are generally celebrated in Norway in the early 21st century. Didn't do too well, was stuck in the semi, but after an incredible 7 finals in the previous 11 NSC editions, I'm not going to complain. It's been an amazing year for ::bal. :D

So let's see what 2018 brings. For our first entry of the year, we're going back to the early roots of Balearica Island, with some rather dreamy trance. Chicane's 2017 cover of Lamb's 1997 song "Górecki", a song that samples the second movement of Polish composer Henryk Górecki's Third Symphony, the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs (thank you Wikipedia). Haven't been able to verify who the singer is, but I think it might be Louise Rhodes, the singer from Lamb. Chicane is no stranger to NSC tho, having represented Mountbatten Island in NSC 14 and Maccha-Brugia in NSC 28, but failing to qualify to the final in both editions. Which is a bit sad, Saltwater from NSC 14 is one of the classics in trance music. Anyway, here's "Gorecki":

Re: Balearica Island has got your back like we're still 17 (NSC 155)

Chicane is trying to keep up with Da Tweekaz, failing to qualify to a final again, for the 3rd time. Disappointing of course, but what was most disappointing was how far Gorecki was from qualifying. Last (of those who didn't fail to vote). :( Honestly thought this would appeal more to the NSC, but I was wrong. Again. :p

We keep trying tho, and I stumbled across my next entry about a month ago, probably from YouTube's suggested videos. And this guy is apparently a bit of a Detroit house legend, with many of his old remixes from the 90's being considered classics, according to a Detroit techno DJ I know. :) MK (Marc Kinchen) has been producing music since the late 80s, he reached the #1 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1993 and 1994, and he was #1 on the UK Singles Chart in 2013. To mention some of his achievements. :) So this guy knows what's up. This song is pretty new tho, released in November 2017, but despite that, I'm hearing a 90's sound in it, and in my opinion, there's nothing wrong with some 90's house. So to the world of NSC, here's MK - 17:

I was a bit surprised tbh, but also a bit relieved, because this was already on my list of near future entries, and I thought I was losing it when I saw it in the semi there, thinking this would score loads of points... Would have been a clear 12 from me at least. But apparently, ::doi was the only voter there, and this is probably not a typical ::doi favorite. We'll see how it scores with everyone else tho, I hope to avoid last place at least. :p

Re: Balearica Island sees MK, and raises with an N (NSC 156)

Doesn't seem like me voting in Cygovision would have changed anything, MK's 17 was far away from qualifying to the final of NSC 155, so another disappointing result. :(

But as always, that's not stopping us, and I decided about my next entry already when I decided to send MK, because our next artist is called MKN. :D And to all the hardstyle haters, I've got bad news, because ::bal is going hardstyle to Moisantia. :D MKN is playing a set in Norway in April, and I've become a rather big fan of him, because of his radio show/podcast "100% Reverse Bass". Reverse bass is a type of hardstyle that's been around pretty much since the beginning, and it's made a bit of a comeback lately. And I love it. :D He's not just a DJ tho, he also makes his own music, and "Me & You" is his latest track. I do however have very little hope of a good result with this, mainly because I don't think a picvid is going to do any good, but we're all here for the music anyway, right? ;) So we'll see, I'll be happy just avoiding the bottom 5 after my last results tbh.

Like it or not, here it is:

Also, Kyle Nurse is afaik the first Welsh artist representing Balearica Island (if you don't count Ryan Giggs as 1/18th of the NSC 129 entry). :)

Re: Balearica Island goes tripping with Rick and Morty (NSC 157)

MKN didn't avoid the bottom 5, but I saw that coming tbh. But as always, we're moving on. :)

NSC 157 is coming up, and the next entry is sort of related to NSC 156. I started looking at the related videos to ::bif 's entry on YouTube, and found Sasio - Hey Mortyyy, a Rick and Morty themed hardtek tune. A great tune, but then I started listening to other remixes of Rick and Morty (because I'm a big fan of the show, and I love that one of the main characters have the same name as me), and eventually came across Rameses B's "Rick and Morty", and it became a favorite rather quickly. And since I for several years have been a bigger fan of psytrance than my entries list in NSC shows (only NSC 55 and AATW Uzbekistan until now), I figured this would be the perfect entry for ::bal in NSC 157. Great video too. :D

Re: Balearica Island gets on a classical submarine (NSC 158)

That was a massive disappointment. I really thought more people would like the Rick & Morty remix, and at least many enough to not finish last. It might be my all-time favorite Balearica Island entry, so that was not the result I had hoped for. :(

Life goes on tho. 2 entries to be posted here, one has been public for a while, in the ESC 2018 spinoff. Actually the first time ::bal has ever joined this spinoff, because the ones I've wanted to send earlier have been taken by someone else. This year, I had 4 songs to choose from, and I eventually decided to go for the Hungarian song, AWS' "Viszlát Nyár". The other 3 would just have to settle for my top points in the spinoff. ;) Not sure what to expect with it, I think it might have better chances in NSC than in ESC, but we'll know that within a few days. I'm sure you'll all heard it by now, but here it is anyway:

So, back to the regular competition. Last year, Alex Christensen (and the Berlin Orchestra) released an album with new classical remakes of 90's dance hits. Of the 14 original songs, 8 have already been entered to the NSC, and this includes Viola Per Sempre 24, Pangora 24, Comino 30, Spila 30, Pangora 33, Balearica Island 54, Balearica Island 83, and also Calypso 80, altho that was actually a cover. That left me with 6 potential entries, but it was really an easy choice. I went with Das Boot, U96's cover of Klaus Doldinger's theme from the 1981 movie "Das Boot", simply because Alex Christensen was actually a part of U96 back then (he left in 2014). In a way, this combines the old movie soundtrack with U96's remake, combining classical music and dance music. Very well made, in my opinion. :)

For those interested, all the songs from the "Classical 90s Dance" album can be found here:

Fingers crossed for a good result...

Re: Balearica Island breathes oxygen (NSC 159)

That went a lot better than I expected. :D Even better than I hoped tbh. After a pretty bad streak of poor results, I was starting to lose hope a bit, altho 5 DNQ's is nowhere near my worst run. But to be just 1 point away from winning with the new version of Das Boot, that was unexpected. So again, thank you to everyone who voted for it, both in the semi and in the final! :D Even won the semi! :D

So that means the next entry will be a PQ, and it's a song I should have sent years ago. The one that basically started everything, my first step into electronic music, Jean-Michel Jarre's "Oxygène IV". Jarre is no stranger to NSC, having represented Pangora in NSC 23 and 29, but he failed to qualify to the final on both occations, so this will be his best result no matter what happens. I personally hope to avoid the bottom 5 with it tho, something I still haven't managed as a PQ, as my best PQ result is 24th in NSC 71.

So again, fingers crossed for a good result, it worked well the last time. ;)

Re: Balearica Island bites (spinoff entry)

Bonus entry! :D A spinoff is coming up, and since the move seems to have gone well, I've decided to join. :)

I was born in 1984, which is a while ago. Altho I had an idea about who to send, I did a search for albums released that year, and it wasn't really a bad year. Several potential entries were released that year, from artists like "Weird Al" Yankovic, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Depeche Mode, Alphaville, Madonna and Jean-Michel Jarre. And Wham's "Last Christmas" also came that year. However, one of my favorite bands also released an album that year, called "Defenders of the Faith", and I have actually sent a song from that album already to the main contest. The band is Judas Priest, and the song was "Freewheel Burning". Not sending that one now tho. Instead, it's gonna be one of the Judas Priest classics, "Love Bites":

Re: Balearica Island (NSC 160)

Very happy with the result Jarre's "Oxygène 4" got in the final. Avoided the bottom 5, AND even got more than 100 points as well. Even close to a top 20! My best PQ result ever! :D Thanks to everyone who voted for it. xheart

The birth year spinoff has also finished, and as usual, I was hoping for a top 10. With 15 entries, that wasn't a given, so I'm very happy that "Love Bites" got a 7th. :D Second 7th place in a row in spinoffs, as AWS got the same in the Eurovision 2018 spinoff. :D

So, we are moving on to NSC 160. Wasn't really sure what to send here, but I eventually figured it was time for some metal again. It's been a while since my last metal entry. So I've decided to go for a Japanese song that a friend sent me the link to in November last year. He's a big fan of Japanese metal, and has a fairly good idea what I like too, but I shared an apartment with him for 4 years, so that might not be very surprising. :p

The song is by Aldious, an all-female power metal band from Osaka, and it's called "We Are":

Let's see how this works out, I haven't had that much luck with metal, so keeping expectations low, but hoping to avoid the bottom 5 at least. :)

Re: Balearica Island freestyles in Kazakhstan

The result Aldious got was a lot better than I feared. Not only did it not finish in the bottom 5, but it was actually very close to qualifying to the final. 70 points! :D Thanks to everyone who voted for it. :D

I'm not announcing who I'm sending to NSC 161 just yet, altho I think I've decided, so instead...

A new spinoff has started! :D AATW Kazakhstan was a tricky spinoff to find an entry for tho, because I have very limited knowledge about Kazakh music. Found a remix of a Bollywood song made by Azamat Sartaev early in my search, some decent pop songs, and also a great remix of Borat's national anthem made by Aussie Dan Absent. And some great trance and psytrance from Kazakh producers. :D But, I stumbled across something else too...

In 2007, Ernar Kaldynov from Kazakhstan (a very small town in Eastern KZ called Karoi, according to someone on Reddit, altho they also claim Karoi is in Western KZ, so I'm not sure about this) entered the TV show "SuperStar KZ" with a song called "Freestailo", possibly meant to be a Kazakh version of Bomfunk MC's - Freestyler:

The judges didn't take him seriously, but he must have become a bit of a people's favorite, because he later performed at the SuperStar final:

Fast forward to 2015, DopeMonkeys had found the video of his song, and made it into a hardstyle track, called "Freestoila". And as a big fan of DopeMonkeys, this is where I first found out about Ernar. I did however not know he was from Kazakhstan until he suddenly popped up on YouTube while I was trying to find an entry for this spinoff. The DopeMonkeys have since made both a version 2.0 and 3.0, as well as a hardcore edit, but I'm sending the first version of this, so the Balearica Island entry to AATW Kazakhstan is DopeMonkeys feat. Ernar Kaldynov - Freestoila:

I've sent DopeMonkeys before, when I hosted NSC 131, where they finished last, and I don't really expect a much better result in this spinoff, but hoping to not finish last this time. :)

Re: Balearica Island is here to wake you up! (NSC 162)

Maybe time for another update...

For NSC 161, I decided to try something a bit different, after I found the video for Solomun - Customer Is King, that was made entirely in GTA 5. I've been a big fan of GTA since I was a kid, and altho I haven't played in a long time due to lack of time, I'm still a fan. The song was maybe a bit too slow for me tho, but I had a feeling that maybe others would like it, but I was wrong. Very wrong...

So, I'm going in a different direction for NSC 162. When listening to NSC semis and finals lately, I've started to feel that far too many of the entries lack both power and tempo. It's occasionally a bit boring to listen to. And even my own entry in NSC 161 was in that category. Well, time to do something about that, so we go back in time a bit, to 2011. The year I went to The Netherlands for hardstyle the first time. This song is still popular tho, and it got a boost again this year after Hardwell played it at Tomorrowland, and it tends to get the crowd going. I tend to lose it completely when I hear it tbh. :p

There are two versions of it tho. The original features a sample of "(Somewhere) Over The Rainbow", but I'm sending the other version, called the "Snooze Mix", because I might send a different version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow later.

So, rise and shine people, the ::bal entry for NSC 162 is Brennan Heart & The Prophet - Wake Up! (Snooze Mix):

Re: Balearica Island joins the resistance (NSC 163)

Update? Yes, update.

My "protest entry" in NSC 162 did just as well as I expected unfortunately. 14 points is the lowest I've had since NSC 149 (13 points), and the 3rd lowest ever. So I guess it can only go up from here. :p No regrets tho, I'm still a big fan of the song, whether you like it or not. ;)

For NSC 163, I had actually decided a while ago, but then I saw the new Within Temptation video, and got unsure. In the end tho, I decided to go with my original choice. It's from a Spanish TV show I know pretty much nothing about, called "La Casa de Papel", known as "Money Heist" in English. In this series, they sing a song, and I'll let Wikipedia explain it:

"Bella ciao" ("Goodbye beautiful") is an Italian folk song that was adopted as an anthem of the anti-fascist resistance. It was used by the Italian partisans during the Italian Civil War between 1943 and 1945 in their struggle against the fascist Italian Social Republic and its Nazi German allies. "Bella ciao" is used worldwide as an anti-fascist hymn of freedom and resistance. The song has much older origins though in the hardships of the mondina women, the paddy field workers in the late 19th century who sang it as a protest against harsh working conditions in the paddy fields in North Italy.

This song has been remixed many times this year after the Netflix show, and my entry is also a remix. I know, it's shocking. But, Pat B has a twist to his. While most remixes of older songs tend to make them up to date, this remix goes a different way. What if this show was popular in 1996, and people were remixing it then? Well, happy hardcore was popular in 1996, so Pat B made a happy hardcore remix that sounds like it was made in 1996. And I love it. :D

So, the ::bal entry for NSC 163 is La Casa De Papel - Bella Ciao (Pat B's 96 Oldschool Remix):

But wait, there's more!

Because, there's a new spinoff, and it's the second edition of "Celebrate NSC". And I decided on my entry for this spinoff a long time ago. In NSC 145, ::fer sent "Doğukan Manço feat. Funda - Yüzleşme", but I was in the other semi, and didn't have time to reju vote, so I never got to show my appreciation for this. But why is this so special? Well, for starters, it's a great song. But, I realized that Doğukan Manço is an actual drifter, as well as a music producer, and as a big fan of drifting, I fell in love with this. No idea how many times I've pushed the replay button on this. It was an easy choice. :D

Re: Balearica Island hails the Ford Granada (NSC 164)

Bad result in NSC 163, great result in the Celebrate NSC 2 spinoff. :D

For NSC 164, I've decided to go for a remix that's been on my waiting list for a couple of years. Despite the thread title, I've never actually had (or even driven) a Ford Granada, but I still like the song. It's originally made by the Norwegian band Vassendgutane in 2005, and the original sounds like this:

But, this is not my entry (even tho I kinda like the original as well). My entry is a remix made by The Cigarillos in 2016, which I like a lot more. :D So, I figure it's time to give it a try in the NSC. :)
And here it is:

Seems fitting to use a remix too btw, because in the song, he's replaced the original engine with a Ford Capri 3 liter engine, which has boosted the acceleration and speed. Kinda like a remix. :D
