Nice to see some love for Aisel's "XXX My Heart". It was my no. 1 that year and I am gutted it didn't qualify. But it was great that it opened the show.

I‘m afraid with "funk" they mean something like Malta this year or Latvia last year or Moldova 2017. Not that they are bad songs (I like them all very much) but… yeah. Mostly never qualify.

A choice like that that screams „This year we decide to not qualify on our own, not EBU DQ'ing us again for being shady, k thanks bye!"

I hope I‘m wrong and it will be an awesome song! *fingers crossed*

So the flop era for Azerbaijan is happening?

Actually, :az: wouldn´t have qualified before (if the EBU had introduced the 100% televoting semi finals earlier) - as other members have already pointed out:

2014 "Start A Fire" (#12)
2015 "Hour Of The Wolf" (#11) - 14 pts difference
2018 "X-ray My Heart" (#12)
2022 "Fade To Black" (#18) - I´m sorry, :0: pts!

I just want to point out that the "professional" juries tried to kill "Mata Hari" - CAN YOU IMAGINE!

:az: is still a very successful Eurovision country in my memory... seeing all their "televoting NQs" at once is quite surprising, imo.
If we just take the last 8 editions into account and apply the new "100% televoting rule", :az: "only" has a "qualification rate" of 50%!

And all of a sudden, former Eurovision powerhouse :az: is as successful as :ch: under the "new rule" - Both have a 50% qualification rate in the last 8 editions (when it comes to televoting) :D

Not really surprising. Most of their songs have been generic. They have some bops like Drip Drop, Mata Hari and When the music dies in their catalogue but most of their songs are whatever. Now that the juries are gone I hope they go away from that pop sound and their english songs and give us something more authentic. Mata Hari was pretty good imo.

Actually I don't think generic is the word to describe their poor televoting results. I mean they did well enough in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021 with the televoting (if qualification is based on televoting) with your so-called generic songs. I dare say they didn't do well only when they send bland tepid songs. IMO, they took risks in 2014 and 2015 with less generic songs but they did rather poorly in the televoting aspect. As for 2022's abysmal televoting result, I can only say there is only so much sad-boy ballads we can take in one semi and the song is the "worst" among the 3.

:az: has always been a jury pleaser type country and their records confirm that.

Surely, they must've changed their strategy this year. Unlike low televote countries like Malta or Czechia, Azerbaijan has potential to draw televotes in when they present a good entry.

My biggest concern would be why Mamagama wasn't chosen. It seemed like the obvious choice and the delegation was even accused of rigging the selection in their favour (although I don't have much trust in that person claiming that). Was their song bad, or did they withdraw since one of the members was being forced to leave? I'm thinking that TuralTuranX being selected might've been a Plan B scenario, which doesn't bode well.

I wrote this in another thread, but it fits in here quite well: people have a certain stereotypical view on the songs the countries are participating with. Maybe not us in this forum, but the general audience.
Songs that’s didn’t Q (or would not have in the televote alone) are songs which are not "typical" Azeri. Even Aisel’s wasn’t a song the general public would refer to Azerbaijan.
So unless they send something like "Always on my mind" or "Drip Drop“ or "Mata Hari“ they won’t do well in the televote.

Awful group name. But on a positive note, I'm encouraged to see, for once, a locally composed song and not some bought in dross from Sweden. Here's hoping that they deliver the goods.
