Re: AZERBAIJAN 2012 - Səbinə Babayeva

I hope Sabina will sing in English not in Azeri in order to be understood to everybody. For example, I never listen a song that I can't get the meaning of the touchy words. I hope her English song will be not only pop music but also with traditional elements, where she will be able to demonstrate her strong vocal. Please do not send song in Azeri and pure traditional song. It is not folklore competition in your native language, but European Song Contest. Shortly, I expect from Azerbaijan song in English with pop/rock/jazz style with traditional elements and strong vocal.

Strongly disagree, if you can't appreciate different languages, I don't really get why you're a fan of Eurovision in a first place to be honest?. It's not a poetry contest, it's a music contest where Europe's different countries should be represented and our differences should be celebrated instead of dismissed (our different languages are part of what makes us as a continent so unique and special).

Music is a universal language in itself, there's no need to understand the lyrics to get a feeling from a song, in contrary it can sometimes even help setting the mood not understanding lyrics.

I don't get your "folklore" comment? It's definitely not ANGLOvision, it's a song contest where ALL Europe should be represented and not just a tiny minority of it.

Last time I checked English was not the official language of Azerbaijan? It's not even the second or third language there and majority seem not to really understand English there either, so how is English representing Azerbaijan? Or should Azerbaijan send a song representing the UK?

For the first time ever this contest is to be held in Azerbaijan, now if anything a song in their own language is a logical decision. Azerbaijan not only send entries so far in English only, but not even made by Azeris in the first place, isn't it time to hear something truly Azeri (which obviously includes the language)?

All languages have unique character, which also gives songs certain characters and moods, and I honestly find it sad that supposed Eurovision "fans" aren't more open to what makes Europe and our nations unique than this. I mean a song even without lyrics can make people feel things, THAT'S the power of music, far more powerful than any languages.

So no, Eurovision is not a folklore contest I agree, but it's a contest where ALL of Europe should be represented, that's the whole point of it. So English is better than other languages because it's more universal?

A-lister, did you told all that to the latest host Germany too or it is actual only when it comes a topic of Azerbaijan? For instance did you ask Germany why they send songs written by American and British authors and win with that? Did you also ask Germany why English was a language of the German entry in their host time? (you could also ask the same question to Norway) Besides have you ever tried to ask your own country why they send songs in English year after year? If you didn't then please go and do it first before coming and giving us your advices? Thank you!

Short answer: Yes, I did!

And btw leave your attitude outside the door please and don't order me to do anything ok? I am free to have my own opinion thank u very much! Now instead of being irrationally upset by my comment, can you please be upset by all the people who publicly diss your own language instead? Because I can't get your sense of logic (or illogic).

You clearly didn't get my point so here it comes again: I would like to hear a song in AZERI language, made by AZERI locals and preferably with AZERI ethnic elements... what's there to be upset about? Instead as an Azeri you should embrace my interest in YOUR language and culture... but no, instead you give me attitude and somehow take it as an insult :?

So my suggestion would be to please re-think the meaning of what I'm actually saying and see it for what it actually is instead.

Also your comment makes no sense what so ever, the songs of some of those countries you mentioned have been known for a quite long time, and Norway and Germany have already chosen their entries, so there's not much we can change about that now can we? While Azerbaijan has yet to choose an entry, which obviously leaves us room to discuss our own preferences and wishes (which I guess is the point of this thread in the first place now isn't it?).

I just can't understand how someone can take it as an insult when people show interest about their country (in terms of music and language)? It makes no sense to me really.

Absolutely agree with this post.

Briefly, if you don't respect your own language, culture and tradition how you can expect that foreigners do that!

Exactly! This is basically one of Sweden's main struggles. I always try to explain this to people but they are generally clueless.

Oh well...

can't we postpone all these language discussion and simply wait when the song is released.

Why? Then the decision is done and there's not much to discuss?

It's like saying: "Can we just stop discussing anything at all because the entry has not been chosen yet".

may be because it is too early? we can discuss about Sabina, if you want. But how can we discuss the song if we know nothing?

What's there to discuss about her?

I disagree, these threads are filled with wishful comments long before the actual ESC season begins, and it's part of what makes this forum going.

"I want this and that artist", "I'd like to hear this type of song"... it's nothing strange, if we can't discuss anything prior the songs been chosen, then all these threads would be pretty empty and the forum be kind of useless.

I cant understand your point that everybody must sing in their own language? I accept that you want it, but I dont want it. I dont understand Azeri, I dont think that there is any other country that understands it either. Apart the music I appreciate the lyrics. I want to understand the whole package of the song (music+lyrics). I cant imagine Safura sings Drip Drop in Azeri and gets 12 points from me!!!

Folklore and anglovision??? Why do you think that those who doesnt sing in folklore style in their own language, sings in Anglovision? Have you ever paid attention to your own country's entries? Or to other Eurovision entries for example last year Germany or Finland with Lordi, Norway with fairytail, Sweden with popular last year and so on? I dont think that any of them knew that they sing in Anglovision.

I believe that Azerbaijan will demonstrate their own culture in Eurovision in Baku. Maybe it will be not Sabina, but they will have something cultural. Azerbaijan was the only country this year that demonstrated their national dance, traditional music during the official opening with Mayors and in the National Final. I am pretty sure that they will show us more cultural stuff during the ESC in Baku.

I think Eurovision is not the right place to get familiar with some countries ethnocultura or folklore by their singers. I cant imagine what people would think about Finnish culture after Lordi.
