An Austrian Green party member claims that he has contacted Azerbaijani opposition members who wanted Conchita Wurst for Baku for a political statement for gays. Seems like there is someone starving for an open door to more tolerance.

Conchita is supposed to represent gays? :?

My exact thought aswell?

He only represent all the existing prejudices against gays. For sure I'm not represented by someone who uses a drag in beard act to draw attention to himself, because that's really what this is about, it's attention seeking not "representing".

I've met gays and transsexuals and drags who would say the exact same thing, and as a gay person myself I'm actually a little offended by the act of his. For sure it's not "helping" the gay community.

If he likes it it's fine, but all this "representing" and "message of tolerance" nonsense I mean really!?

And the Green Party brand is notorious for their political correct dummies and hippies, who are just out to get votes from every possible minority group they can find, when in fact it's all just fake and populism.

If there are morons who label all gays just because of 1 person what the heck has she do with this?
Blame people, not this act.

On ORF is at this moment a live discussion on the Song Contest and whether the Austrian entry is sexistic or not. And the Green party member, who participates in this discussion, told that Azerbaijani opposition partisans were looking forward to seeing Conchita in Baku, because that would have helped to break up the homophobic environment.

But I can see that is not common sense here in Western Europe.

But the whole thing is that they want to use this act as some sort of "poster-boy" for the gay community, and that's my problem. I don't really blame the act (although I do believe acts like this doesn't work in favor of gay tolerance), I just tried to explain why I think it's wrong to promote acts like this as some sort of face or spokes-person for "all gays".

Hope that made it more clear.

That Green Party member is a moron imo (don't expect anything less from Green Party though), if anything that would just enforce homophobia.

Also I hate these hypocritical PC politicians who want to spread their "acceptance" to the world, but accept intolerance etc. in their own countries.

It's like saying that others have no brains and they will think of him as of some sort of gay symbol (lol).
Not all ppl are like that.

And those who label us. Why would you care about idiots?
If not him they will find another symbol xshrug

Azerbaijan is certainly not the cradle of democracy, and in opposition you cannot do much against a regime which keeps you down. So they thought the spotlight on Azerbaijan would help, especially when some candidates spread liberal messages.

The Green party member himself is openly gay and a huge ESC fan. Maybe he even reads and posts in this forum, so I wouldn't dare calling him names.

But the general public, especially those which may not really have any connection to the gay community or know any gays themselves, do look at all these public figures.

Well, I do care in a sense because it's not an isolated case, if gays are shown in a certain clichéd way, as a gay you will be met with more prejudices against yourself.

I'd wish the world was a nice place and all where we could sing kumba-ya and hold hands (sort of like Green Parties around Europe imagine reality), but it's not.

But we're not talking about democracy here are we? That's a whole other issue. I just find it hypocritical because these politicians are so quick to judge, yet they put the blind eye to similar stuff in their own countries.

I don't care, I don't know the guy, he is a politician and he should be ready for criticism then. I should have made it more literal then: His idea is moronic... happy with my change of words?

If he, as a gay, is happy with spreading prejudices then it's up to him, it's not something I think is ok.

I guess he doesn't see it that way, but sorry that's what I see.

Gays will always be portrayed in such way. And such people will always find examples. So all of this doesn't matter.

Conchita Wurst is certainly not making fun of gays. He, the guy who performs Conchita, is openly gay, and created Conchita for whatever purposes, maybe just for getting attention. And somebody may think his/her appearance could help people understand what diversity means, others, like you, feel offended, because they feel like a bad light is thrown upon them. But, it's the choice of the individual artist. One gay cannot prohibit the other gay to perform this way.

That's true, but I think gays should find ways of promote themselves differently and not in such ways. There will always be idiots, but those need to be educated, not "proved right".

I don't think he makes fun of gays on purpose, but his act sort of does.

But my reaction now was not against Conchita, that's his prerogative if he wants to seek attention that way, but I reacted against someone wanting to promote clichéd attention acts as "poster-boys" for gays in general.

If Conchita were just an example for confirming prejudices, what else are all those Rainbow and LGBT parades? They are partially vulgar and obscene, and families with children come and watch gays perform even sexualistic acts.

So, there's not just one truth. It's a matter of individual perception.

Oh, don't even get me started on THOSE things!

Of course, and this happens to be my perception of it all.

Anyways, we're sort of getting off-topic, there's a topic for all this in the "politics" section I believe.

I think being gay in liberal Sweden is different than being gay in conservative Austria, and even more different in a country like Azerbaijan, where the norm is the rule and anything deviating from it, gets closeted.

You are lucky to live in Sweden, but there are still other perceptions and even expectations on that issue as you have.

Anyways, Conchita won't become an issue for the Song Contest 2012, maybe next year in another country.

The discussion was basically about Trackshittaz being mere sexists or worthy representatives for Austria.

It's not about education ;) It's about tolerance. You rather have it or not. You will always be a "f** in a pink boa* (insert any other image) for them.

imo, ESC has all kinds. Queens and hunks, ordinary guys... people who search for a reason to be homophobic will always find such reason. Or invent it

Conchita or someone else... rather matter of taste and freedom of expression.
I'm more happier with Trackshittaz

Trackshittaz being sexist... then almost all teens who think about sex 24/7 are sexist )))

Oh, Sweden is by far not perfect on these issues, like I said we have the exact same politicians who act all "gay-friendly", but when gays are being killed in honor killings they are totally silence because they don't want to criticize other minorities.

Oh well... haha yeah we should go on topic.

Trackshittaz are sort of a parody act, I wouldn't call them "sexist", they just make a parody of the whole hip-hop culture and adds a local Austrian twist to it.

I get your point, but I don't really agree, then societies would never progress on these issues, and for instance Sweden today is way more tolerant to gays than 50 years ago, and that has partly to do with education.
