I have a question: How big is the real interest for Eurovision in
?? I read somewhere it´s a very niche thing down there and not the big show like the EBU claims.
I honestly believe that it's quite "big there".
Due to its schedule time, the Eurovision Song Contest might not have absolutely amazing viewing figures but they are pretty decent.
"My personal experience":
When I visited Australia in 2016, I travelled to different cities and stayed at airbnb hosts and they even talked about it (they were straight), my taxi driver knew who Dami Im was ("our girl") since "Sound of Silence" was played on the radio.
"Hard numbers":
In 2019 and 2022, more than 400,000 ppl watched the contest (
source).
You can count the events which got more than 3 million viewers in the last decade by just using your two hands - so the number isn't that shabby for a broadcast at 5 am.
2 years ago, more than 41 Eurovision songs had charted on the official Australian Single Chart before which is quite good as well:
Australians first had the opportunity to watch the Eurovision Song Contest on SBS in 1983 and the tradition has continued every single year since. But Australians were enjoying music from the Contest decades earlier, with eleven Eurovision songs charting in Australia before our first...

Of course, Eurovision is not as big in down under as it is in Scandinavia or even Central Europe but for being that far away from the continent, it go dedicated fans and it doesn't get unnoticed by the general public, either.
It's clearly EBU's biggest market OUTSIDE the European continent and that's why Australia totally make sense as an exception to the rule and that's why I completely agree with you. It's getting totally ridiculous regarding "whether they can/should enter Eurovision again or not".
