I still think that all this "EBU has to decide" discussion is so utterly nerve-wracking and stupid at the same time.

Australia's participation should have been an one-off to celebrate Eurovision's anniversary because as today - after seeing Australia having participated 9 times - it feels unnecessary to discuss whether they "are allowed to continue participating".... unless it's only about money...

But seriously, I also think it´s getting really ridiculous.

I have a question: How big is the real interest for Eurovision in :au:?? I read somewhere it´s a very niche thing down there and not the big show like the EBU claims. xthink

I honestly believe that it's quite "big there".
Due to its schedule time, the Eurovision Song Contest might not have absolutely amazing viewing figures but they are pretty decent.

"My personal experience":
When I visited Australia in 2016, I travelled to different cities and stayed at airbnb hosts and they even talked about it (they were straight), my taxi driver knew who Dami Im was ("our girl") since "Sound of Silence" was played on the radio.

"Hard numbers":
In 2019 and 2022, more than 400,000 ppl watched the contest (source).
You can count the events which got more than 3 million viewers in the last decade by just using your two hands - so the number isn't that shabby for a broadcast at 5 am.

2 years ago, more than 41 Eurovision songs had charted on the official Australian Single Chart before which is quite good as well:

-------------

Of course, Eurovision is not as big in down under as it is in Scandinavia or even Central Europe but for being that far away from the continent, it go dedicated fans and it doesn't get unnoticed by the general public, either.

It's clearly EBU's biggest market OUTSIDE the European continent and that's why Australia totally make sense as an exception to the rule and that's why I completely agree with you. It's getting totally ridiculous regarding "whether they can/should enter Eurovision again or not".

My gut feeling is they're just going to announce who the act is same time they announce however long the contract extension is for.

Also 400k in ratings is not bad at all. That's enough to get you in the top 10 most watched shows on an average day. And you guys act like SBS can compete with the major other channels and broadcasters which it cannot. And does not lol.

That's what I believe, too. The ratings are good/high enough to make SBS follow the Eurovision journey.
+ Fans want to continue seeing Australia in the contest.
It is time EBU found a permanent solution.

With Ricki Lee planning to enter Australia Decides with "On My Own" if the contest had gone ahead, and her rumored to do Eurovision back in 2018 (SBS was originally going with a Universal artist), as well as releasing some music now recently, I wouldn't be surprised if perhaps she were to go to Malmö next year.

I think Australia's in cause I read somewhere on Eurovision.tv that "Europe (and Australia) are gonna vote", something along that line

I feel they would've announced by now if we're not participating anymore. They probably want announce who will be representing us at the same time of announcing we are still participating. Ricki Lee would be a good choice as they could cross promote with Austereo, as she is on one of the biggest rated radio shows in the country. She could get funding easily for good staging etc.

Also take what you will from this but Anthony told me he's done a song with Delta recently. Delta is independent now with her own label, and has done Isle of Malta, is doing Hoopla etc. So Eurovision isn't out of the realm of possibility for her considering she does have an European tour booked, what better platform to promote that then by doing Eurovision.

That's interesting!
The phrase really implies that :au: will be participating and voting for their favourite entries next year.

If Australia hadn't been allowed to continue taking part, the EBU would have come up with "Europe (and the rest of the world) are gonna vote", right?
I mean, if Australia doesn't participate in ESC, they will be part of the "rest of the world" voting and mentioning the country separately wouldn't make sense at all.

I guess it's "kinda" safe to see :au: in Malmö.

Come to think of it, I'd actually love to see Ricki Lee in Malmö for Australia!! she can do a dance banger or a slower song really well. I love her songs "Mirage" and "Not Too Late"!!

But Delta Goodrem would also be a dream come true. And she was originally gonna go to Stockholm back in 2016!! and Ricki Lee was gonna go to Lisbon (perhaps) in 2018!! I'd love to see any of them in Malmö.

And yes, as long as they can get funding for a good stage show. I still feel so bad for Jess Mauboy back in 2018 who got such terrible staging xthink I really had no thoughts about SBS screwing up so badly that year considering the fact she was announced in DECEMBER 2017, and she was one of Australia's biggest stars + had the backing of Sony.

I thought Delta just did a European tour...

but perhaps she wants to build on that and conquer Europe now through Eurovision ;)

I feel like their participation would be in doubt if we were at 40+ countries again tbh
