The winner of the second chance for Yaponesia's final 'Your Sound' is Ukraine's own Makhno Project! (in many ways this is actually a third chance attempt for them, and the nth time I send a song with reference to Odessa).

Ocellot - Jelly Soul

Ocellot are a five-piece band based in Barcelona. Their music is characterised by 'basic but enveloping doses of psychedelia found in the loops characteristic to their music, with more consistency and personality'. And adorable nodding critters.

They were a discovery for me at Benicassim festival last July as one of the more local acts playing there. Jelly Soul is a song about a soul made of jelly (I guess?).

Ignea - Alga (Forward)

Ignea, from Kiev, describe themselves as a 'modern oriental metal' band. Formerly known as 'Parallax', they were the first Ukrainian band to play oriental metal. In 2015, the band changed its name to IGNEA and released the debut video for their single 'Alga' with a full symphonic orchestra.

The song title "Alga" means "forward" in the Crimean Tatar language, which the track is dedicated to. With a backdrop of soaring orchestral melodies and driving guitars, lead vocalist Helle Bogdanova sings about the beauty of her land, as well as some other recent events in that area of course (she doesn't seem very happy in that spoken break, does she...)
