Yes, I was upset that they didn't mention we came 5th in 2009, but they did redeem themselves by having both Guy and Graham explaining why countries vote for each other - which also points out that they know we do crap because of the bad song and not because Europe hates us.
Yeah I think Guy and Graham do get it. It used to annoy me when Terry complained about political voting and countries giving their neighbors points - they share languages and culture, have similar musical tastes, and artists are more likely to travel around the smaller regions to build up popularity. A song that is adored in Belgium is more likely to be popular in the Netherlands than in Turkey. But the winner each year is the song that breaks out of the cultural groups and is more universally appealing. Whilst there is probably a degree of politics to it I think it is more than that (and the UK & Ireland have similar tastes and always voted for each other, but he ignored that...
)
The other thing as well that Guy said was that the real problem with a national selection is that the British Public are the only people who won't be able to vote for the song in the final, so even when we picked songs that were very 'tongue-in-cheek' in-jokes they were completely ignored by the continent.
I also didn't realise he had been responsible for the 1998 show! So he has 'come back' to Eurovision as it were
