Re: THE NETHERLANDS 2018

You know, I only ask to be surprised and proven wrong!

The thing is whoever had a say in your song selection in recent years had a particular liking for country music (it can't be just a coincidence given the success of "Calm After The Storm") and, as Waylon is mostly known internationally for his duet with Ilse, I don't think it's a crazy idea to expect an umpteenth round of country music (because it worked for you in the past).

Personally: the more adventurous, the better. I precisely hope you guys go out of your comfort zone.

If Waylon brings soul and funk - or any other genre except country music - to the party, then it can only be refreshing. The last you need is to persevere in one single music genre.

You're absolutely right. But we also shouldn't exaggerate (is that the way one writes that word?) the amount of country we've sent. 2012 Joan Franka & 2014 TCL for sure. 2016 Douwe Bob however wasn't really full-on country right?, Some influences yeah, but it was mostly 70's-pop/singer-songwriter.

I don't really care if he's going to do a country song again, as long as I can just enjoy it xshrug .

Oh my God, I love this. The Netherlands had two of my absolute favourite entries in 2014 and 2016, this classy, country-inspired 'down-to-earth style' really suits them well and Waylon made some really good songs in the past. Sounds very promising!

This is very likely the best representer announcement of this season unless Valentina Monetta returns.

:) I precisely said "country music-flavoured" in my other post, which was more accurate because indeed some of them weren't full-on country, yet they still had a vibe reminiscent of it somehow. I personally would also include Trijntje's "Walk Along" to the list, but yeah, I just wish Waylon will radically break away from the sound of your past entries. :p Just my personal opinion at present - because I like to be surprised - we all have different expectations after all.

Fingers crossed for a banger xcheer

Meh. I dislike Calm After the Storm in all its dour burlesque glory, so all my hope is going towards them picking something far from that.

"Calm After the Storm" was tolerable and refreshing in the context of Eurovision. Also beautifully staged. We probably have to thank that entry for showing Eurovision that people can enjoy and support understated things. I've got a strong aversion to trendy "look at me wearing my circle brim hat" poser folk-pop though. I'll give this choice the benefit of the doubt and will see what happens. My fear is that it won't be for me. Something like "Love Drunk" would face my full on, red hot fiery scorn. An artist with a song like that in their repertoire has a hard time getting into my take seriously books. I can't say I enjoyed anything else I just listened to of his either. The Netherlands will surely be a contender this year though I guess.

Re: THE NETHERLANDS 2018 - Waylon

Everybody that links the selection of Waylon to the Common Linnets and CATS will be sorely disappointed.
I attribute the 2014 success for 90% to Ilse, whereas Waylon was mostly a good supportive voice.
The reason the Common Linnets broke up was also due to Waylon nog feeling included and receiving too small of a role.
Besides, looking at his work as a solo-artist, I see Waylon more as 50's rocker than a country singer.

Waylon would be vein enough to only enter Eurovision as some sort of redemption, where he wants to show the world that he is completely different from the Common Linnets and that he can be successful with his own style. So expecting a similar song as in 2014 will be very unlikely. I would expect something like 'Wicked Way' or 'Lovedrunk', although probably of lesser quality.

I will just say it flat out: I'm not a fan of Waylon, not as a person, nor as an artist. The only thing he does have going for me is a very strong and unique voice. People who are excited for Waylon, because he is an ex-member of the Common Linnets, I will warn you. You will not receive a song similar to Calm After the Song, nor will it be half as good.

Ilse is amazing, it's not false that she was the one who really lighted up the duo

I've been watching Waylon's videos and I honestly can't wait to listen to his songs. It's true that the best part of TCL was Ilse, at least for me, too, but it's also true that in the duo he couldn't show his potential nor the things he can do with his voice. I mean... xheartxheartxheart

I just hope the song/s do him justice

This guys flops. Then they send Ilse. She wins the whole thing. That would be hilarious!

As far as I understand this he presents 5 songs over a week and then tells us (without any voting from the public) which song he chose? What's the point of this??? Just give us your choice right now! Don't like this attitude. It basically says: look and appreciate how cleverly I chose from these.
