Not my kind of songs, it sounds too old for me, but definitely the most memorable out of the five candidates. I expect another good result for The Netherlands. 7 points.

Now that I'm famous In the Netherlands, I'm requesting a Lifte time supply of Durch Kroketten and Oliebollen.

And of course an amount of 'hagelslag' too!

 Now I know that it's time to visit the Netherlands again ... I didn't know there is such a Thing as hagelslag. Wow. Reminds me I am hungry. But wonderful. And I don't mean hagelslag, but the song. It's still in my top 5!

I have a feeling this is the dark horse of the year.

This is a definite top 5 contender for me, it might be a bit too niche to win but it's easily one of the best songs in the contest.

Love this

It should be mandatory listening to the Netherland entry of Franco's thread and overthink. Outlaw? Hm, OK. So, I had to lookup this Waylon Jennings. Hmmm ... well ... no, not so much, I think Willem should rename himself again to

ronnie-band-mates-reversed.jpg

Ronnie Van Zant

Hell, the name is even Dutch. If anyone is left in the dark, Ronnie Van Zant was the singer of the legendary Lynard Skynard. He died when the band's plane crashed just a few months after this:

Their Freebird may be more like Waylon's esc entry

I have a hard time understanding why this is so high with the bookies? Maybe the juries will vote for it, but I don't see Europeans in general flocking to vote for a quite generic and boring country-rock song. While there might be some enthusiasts out there that appreciate this genre, in general it's not something the average Europeans listen to or even like to listen to, it's almost exclusively American (I guess also you could gather enough fans in Canada, Australia and NZ where Country is also decently big, but Europe?), Country was never really popular in most parts of Europe except for the few times it was somehow compromised with more straight up Pop, in ballad form (Shania Twain) or EDM/techno (Avicii). What's this thing with Netherlands wanting to sound so American all the time? I should like it for bringing diversity, but the song is just too bland for me and this whole wannabe American thing is meh.

It's not country. I don't think it should be called blues-rock either. It's the same genre as Eagles (Hotel Calefornia) and ZZ-top (Tres Hombres) whatever you would call it. I agree it is very American though.

edit:
I found the genre "Southern rock" on Wikipedia which I think is the most appropriate. Country rock is more like The band and Creedence Clearwater Revival I think.

But isn't "Southern Rock", as you call it, basically Country-Rock though? xshrug , maybe it's not the correct name of the genre, but I think most people can relate to that description.

You are right about your assumptions. I am actually one of them. I usually hate Country Music - and the emphasis is on 'hate'. Can't stand the Country Music and all the things that go along with it. BUT, Waylon is quite different. As someone said above, it's not Country. And it really doesn't matter how you call it. Country, rock, blues. Fact is that this song has something special. Even I like it very much and it is among my top 5. Sometimes you can't explain it but music has a lot to do with emotion and that song feels right to me.

I'm personally not a hater of Country, but I must admit that I rarely find any Country song I like so I guess generally I'm not a big fan, however the worst to me is Country mixed with Rock, and this is more or less that so I really don't like it. I much prefer the more subtle Country-inspired ballad he was entering in 2014, now that was a nice song imo.

But yeah, it's all about different taste in the end of the day, but like I said, I don't think majority in Europe like this style of music so I think Netherlands again will have to rely more on jury love.

I don't think it's worth hating genres, when people do it tends to be about setting up some favoured genre in contrast to some other genres that it's thought in opposition to. I'd rather like the better things in any style. And there certainly can be decent songwriting and melody in country (much of which isn't traditional sounding now). Though I don't like this entry that much, not because of the style just because I don't think it's good for its style.

The thing is this is more blues-rock than country

Blues-rock was/is very popular in Europe. I have a hunch it was even invented in England in the 60's. For example Eric Clapton, Animals and Cream, eventually Jimi Hendrix.

Looked for country rock, came up with this

My point Waylon's Outlaw In 'Em is a lot more heavy and therefore I think Southern rock is a better classification

In Sweden Country is very much linked to dansband and therefore tainted with plenty of cheese. There are some artists who tries to make serious country, for example First Aid Kit and Jill Johnsson. I believe it's the same throughout Europe, people thends to look down on Country. Personally I agree with you, there's rarely any country that I fancy. I had a brief period of Bluegrass though.
