Re: SWITZERLAND 2013 - Heilsarmee - You and me
I looked up translation after you said that it was a beautiful song. And i like that it's not some cliche phrases connected together by articles and prepositions, but still... did nothing to me
I enjoy different kinds of music. true, i tend to like heavier stuff, or something with a clear rhythm (80% of what i listen has "rock" or sometimes "metal" as part of genre description from folk-rock to industrial metal lol). My all time fav Eurovision song is Ruslana's Wild Dances But i like a soft song once in a while as well. I loved last year's Finnish entry, even though i didn't understand a word of it on the first listen.
I liked Kuula a lot (though it was a more dramatic song for sure).
Oh and don't let me start on Zeljko's stuff. My fav of his was Lejla (wish he had done it, instead of Hari Mata Hari )
My point is if you insist on singing in a language few understand, melody has to grab you. I listen to a lot of russian/belarusian music that will have absolutely no effect on those who don't understand language. And there are a lot of soft, emotional songs among them. They are written and sung beautifully, but I also know that they would have failed miserably at the contest like Eurovision if they ever tried.
And I understand trying to "educate" Europe and not succumb to a level of "everyone's understanding" or at leas most.
I wish EBU changed rules a bit. In a perfect world you would HAVE to sing in you official language and provide an English subtitle track so the broadcaster can display it during your song.
Yes, it's obvious that all these are personal opinions.
Imo, I like the sound... and it's obvious that, considering the music and lyrics, her performance had to be calm, placid.
Ayway, I found some days ago, an english translation of the text.

Personally, I like both text and music; I don't know, however, what is your fav musical genre.
