The ‘Heilsarmee’, winners of this weekend’s Swiss national final in Kreuzlingen, have been told that they won’t be allowed to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest under their current name or if they wear their uniforms.
An official SRF press release said that the broadcaster had asked the European Broadcasting union for guidance on the issue after the song was picked. An EBU statement read:
“The song “You and I” meets the requirements of the EBU. Nevertheless, it is clear from the perspective of the EBU that a performance in Malmö will only be possible if the band does not appear in the official uniform of the Salvation Army. In addition, the song may not be entered under the name of ‘Salvation Army’. The EBU Reference Group will review whether these changes were implemented in January.
Why? Ridiculous...they didn't even ask Trackshittaz to change their name
That's some bullsh*t, the war on Christians have found its way into Eurovision and EBU headquarters!!!
The same thing would have happened if "The Atheist party" (pretending it's a real name) or any other name of an organization, brand, company would have represented Switzerland. It's not a war on Christianity.
The only reason why the group's participation may be in danger is that the Salvation Army and their uniforms are registered trademarks. Guys, you are not getting the point.
Well, we can only speculate about that.
But aren't they actual part of the Salvation Army? I would have got it if they've just called themselves such with no actual attachment to it. It's also a non-profit brand so it's not as if they sponsor Coca Cola or anything, it's also a non- offensive brand (I mean it's not as if it's terror network or something). So they can't have their name nor their uniforms? The uniforms are part of the act
But aren't this group in fact a part of The Salvation Army??
That wouldn't matter. I wouldn't be able to use "Boy Scouts" just because I'm am a member or use the name of my insurance company just because i'm employed by them
But isn't that up to The Salvation Army to judge this and not EBU? If The Salvation Army is ok with it then it's not as if they illegally use their brand right?
If I got it right the point is that this could count as a form of advertisement, am I correct? Which would mean even the Salvation Army wouldn't be able to okay it...shame as for non-German speakers Heilsarmee is a great name
Not really, because whether or not it's intentional it is going to provide them with exposure and/or promotion of their organization. I'm sure "Microsoft" wouldn't have a problem to use their name in Eurovision (or facebook, remember?) but it is still against the rule. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe that the Heilarmee here is to push their believes or spread their morals across Europe but the rules apply to everyone. Just like the Facebook song wasn't trying really to sell their products it was meant as a joke, it won't change the facts.
