According to some leaks,

Benidorm is awful this year,

allegedly.
Well, the leaks weren't wrong: this makes last year's Benidorm Fest resemble UMK 2023!

Eh, this was not very good. Definitely worse than Eesti Laul and Montesong.
Definitely! Montenegro did a decent job but just the difference in population between the two countries, combined with the fact that :me: is a sporadic Eurovision participant with 2 qualifications, is more than enough reason for the Spanish delegation to feel ashamed of this. (They won't, though!)

Well, can't say I'm surprised by the overall low quality, but come on, BF 23 was SO STRONG, what happened last year (and this year)? This change in artistic direction was and still is an absolute sabotage :(
Agree 100%. Looking at the competition overall, not all of 22's songs were perfect but it seemed like a more than decent start. 2023 was one of the best national finals that year and then it just fell off a cliff.

I suppose at least no-one's desperate for a Spain win after the Junior Eurovision AI debacle but there's no chance of it happening this year or in the near future, probably.

The only two songs that caught my interest are:

Lachispa - Hartita de llorar
Celine Van Heel - La Casa

So, I do hope, but really really hope, one of these two will win Benidorm. Otherwise, I'm sorry Spain, but for me, and myself only, it's bust. The problem I have with Benidorm is the songs are wayyy too similar, but I guess our spanish friends love latino/reggaeton music so much and that genre tend to obnubilate every other musical genre out there.

I"m sorry spanish friends but I... really don't stand reggaeton inspired style! Expecially when It's so invasive. It's my fault, I know. I tried... but I really really can't.

Best Benidorm was 2022. For example: I hated "Ay Mamá" back then but "Ay Mamá" would have won Benidorm easily this year, "Secreto de Agua" would have won easily, "Terra" would have won easily, "Calle de la lloreria" would have won easily, even "Raffaella" would have won easily...

Chanel won that year and, surprise surprise, She came third in Eurovision. Benidorm was probably the best NF in 2022 alongside UMK. And I think Spain really had a chance to win it all that year or at least fight for an historic comeback in Eurovision palmares after so many years... before Putin decided It wasn't the case (not going political, but it's obvious a lot of votes for Ukraine were due to them suffering an invasion, let's be honest).

Agree, I slightly prefer '23 but '22 lineup was really strong. But since then, that's another story...

I felt bad all day for not having the time to listen to the songs yesterday. Now I'm thinking i could go for the rest of 2024 without hearing any of these.

K!ngdom has some potential, Daniela Blasco is super hot and too young to remember Beyonce's huge international hit from 2003, so I'll let it slide. I'll need a good live performance from both of them, but for now i can't say i have a favorite. :(

Tbf, i didn't say potential for eurovision, but potential for my endorsement.

We need a Big5 country to sacrifice itself in the grand final. We don't want Slovenia, Austria and Norway to fight for last place again. Who's with me?

Does :es: only have these cliché pop songs and these Latino/ reggaeton influenced songs? Where are :es: rock/ jazz/ indie/ soul/ EDM… songs???

Seems like I truly don’t understand :es: music or at least let’s say what RTVE is doing at Eurovision…
Jazz, soul and EDM indeed almost do not exist in Spain. Rock is almost dead, having peaked in the 1980s (Megara was a true outlier in 2023 BF). And indie, believe it or not, Chica Sobresalto would be a good depiction of Spanish indie scene.

I'm glad we have some different and risky songs like Celine van Heel's, DeTeresa's, Lachispa's and Mawot's. But JKabello and Melody are amazing performers and I fear they may sell well their average proposals.

And instead, we have salsa, pasodoble, saeta, flamenco, urban, among others, which are nicely represented in this selection of songs :)

It's funny that I listened to some pundits claim some songs were better suited for Strictly come dancing than Eurovision... Guess what? Salsa and pasodoble are music genres and not just background noise for TV shows!

I would add that, even if it doesn't matter for Eurovision Song Contest, some entries are dog whistles who only appeal to Spanish audiences.

For example Melody and Sonia y Selena lyrics are full of references to their careers (a bit like Angy last year) and even include little easter eggs in instrumental parts. Hell, I even notice a little joke from Mark Dasousa in 'Reinas', as he produced the song and he took the "Zorra, Zorra, Zorra" chorus from last year to turn it into "Reinas, Reinas, Guapas, Guapas". :p

MAWOT too pays a double tribute. The references to Italian music are crystal clear but for foreigners it may be hard to notice that he is giving Tino Casal vibes as well.

Preach,

for me also the only two viable options that aren't some random, cheap music from Spanish radio, I especially love La Casa.

I also don't mind Lucas Bun and Henry Semler but I know they don't have any chances of winning.

I have waited for years to have salsa in ESC and now we get such a good track. Hopefully this goes to Basel. xcheerxlove

After a first impression where only one song stuck with me and following my usual initial pessimism, I let the songs sit for a few days because I think sometimes I get carried away by expectations vs. reality, and frankly, my expectations are always sky-high. So I think that, after a careful and pressure-free listen, my favorites are:

  • K!ngdom - Me gustas tú (it has already a music video: https://youtu.be/y7YPgIYFWII). Super catchy song, I loved it from the first listen. Sadly, it is too plain to outstand in Eurovision, imo. Great song for the Spanish music market, not suitable to export it.
  • Daniela Blasco - Uh Nana. Daniela is a great dancer (see another video of hers: https://youtu.be/nSf9heaYkJU), and I sense that she’s going to deliver an impressive performance in that regard. We'll have to see how she does vocally live.
  • DeTeresa - La Pena (https://youtu.be/v3c9YJTNk5g). This song blew my mind when I first heard it because I really liked the beat, but I didn't understand all those changes – I felt like I was listening to a medley of songs. But honestly, now I like it quite a lot.
  • Lachispa - Hartita de llorar. Great voice, sharp lyrics, a modern song with a traditional base that doesn’t fall flat and has great potential for staging.

This is easily the best edition of Benidorm Fest ever in my opinion. There is not a single song in the selection I don't like. Special standouts (all 10/10) for me are Esa Diva, V.IP., and Hartita de Llorar. I have been listening to all three of them on repeat since they came out and I can't stop. If everything goes well, it might be a great year for Spain after the two-year flop streak (I know Eaea and La Zorra both had lots of fans, I mean flop purely in the context of ESC final result, which in both cases was terrible).

I can't see anyone other than one of these three winning, so I guess it'll be good news for you no matter what the final result is.
