It happened that this year the voting method has changed and so the probabilities to qualify by blocks have been reduced. The Nordics can't be compared with ex Yugo blocking votes because they always gave 12 points to their neighbors and even the whole top 3 is full of Balkans fellows... Take a look how many points Sweden gave to Denmark or Nornway last year, and his 12 pointer was Cyprus ...in 2011 Finland gave 12 to Hungary and so on.
Most ex-yu singers are known among the ex-yu countries, because they do concerts over there (there are interviews, CD marketing, etc). Like last year. Kaliopi is known very well in the ex-yu countries, and so is Zeljko Joksimovic, Nina Badric and to some extent Maya Sar. These people have collaborated together or have collaborated with friends of these people on musical projects. The Slovenian song in 2012 was composed by the guy who composed Molitva, and hence the points (not big, but they were there). Dino Merlin from 2011 is very well known among the ex-yus. And his 12 points should come as no surprise. Even I wanted him to get the 12's!!
Nina Kovac comes from a known family of musicians, so her points are also no big of a surprise. Maja got only 30 points in the televoting (which means it got not much support from the ex-yus at all), but got points mostly because of the jury and her singing. In 2004, Slovenia ended almost last with 5 points in the semi.
Should I go on????
Ok, I'll go on. Milan from 2010, was part of an idol-type show that was pretty much watched in the ex-yu countries. He also has released songs that were popular over there. Same thing goes about Vukasin Brajic. Feminem flopped big time in 2010, even though some people knew them among the ex-yu countries. Slovenia also failed bad. Macedonia didn't get much televoting love in 2010 (it was mostly jury support).
I can still go on! The thing is artists like Greta and Jonsi (which i absolutely loved), are probably not popular or known in Finland or Sweden. I doubt Loreen was popular in Iceland before "Euphoria" or Krista Siegfrids.
